98 v40 t4 knocking

I've got a knocking niose coming from the steering when the steering wheel is rocked left and right. there is no play in the track rod ends or the bottom ball joints, now I'm confused. any ideas?

Is this when driving or stationary?
have you checked the drop link bars??

staionary is when you notice it. it's got new drop links and anti-rollbar bushes.

The only other things I can think of are the steering rack itself, or maybe the steering column bearing?

If it still makes the noise when it's jacked up, jack it up and remove the wheels, then have a listen around while a mate turns the wheel??

if it stops when jacked up then have a look at the shock top mounts (it could possibly be the bearings in there).

Inner rack ends okay ?. They can usually be replaced separately to the rack.
