Hi all, does anyone here know the laws on company car tax? I have a van that is over three years old so tax is £350 a year,if it's a new one then you pay £500 a year. I don't use the van privately and my boss has stated this in a letter to the tax office so i dont pay any now. Looking at the rates for 07-08 it goes up to £3000 a year! My main query is if i got a 4x4 pick up say a Nissan Navara what tax would i have to pay, does this qualify as a car or van?I would probably use this privately to.I have to bring my van home as i'm on call to,does this make any difference? Thanks in advance Ben.:snail:

If you use the van to travel to and from the place of work this is classed as private mileage. If you register your home as a place of work you are exempt plus other tax friendly benefits are available.

How hard/easy is it to register your home as your business as i am employed, and my office is 26 miles away.Would i have to get my boss to write a letter stating that i go straight to jobs from home?Which i normally do anyway. Thanks for all the help. Ben:snail:

When you state the figures £350, £500, & £3000, you only pay a percentage of this figure. Off the top of my head its about 10% that you actually pay as an employee. Pick-ups are to be de-allocated their status as commercial vehicles, I think that happens this year sometime. This has come about because company directors have been purchasing/using pick-ups instead of the usual company car, so as to avoid paying tax on them. I know this all sounds a bit vague, but I have some literature somewhere, I will see if I can dig it out.

Sorry can't find the literature, but give your local tax office a bell they should have some leaflets on the matter.
