hi welcome to the forum, I reckon most will say the T5.
There isnt a great deal of T6 experience on the forum, thats probably coz it only ever came in the s80 tho (to the best of my knowlege). A s70 or even s60 t5 will be pretty cheap to buy, will be more widely known and i guess would be cheaper to look after. its also pretty good for tuning further if thats your bag! I reckon a standard T5 should keep you more than entertained for your work tho tbh!
In all seriousness, if you can run to the purchase cost, what about a (diesel) D5 (in an S60 - or s80 i believe)- loads of economy for your job and tunable to be on par with a standard t5!

believe it or not the local authority who decide what we can plate to use as taxis have decided that the s60 is too small in the rear seat?or headroom dept, odd considering they allow the s40 to go through? i know what you mean about the d5 they are brilliant cars suprisingly quick and amazing on fuel for such a big car a local driver has a manual d5 returning forty in taxi use which is very good lots of stop starting doesnt help mpg my old 525 tds bmw only did 25 taxi ing thats why i keep looking at petrol cars as there isnt much difference in taxi use unless you get on a good long run.i ran a vectra 2.5 v6 sri for a while and it didnt do much less than the bmw so being that the petrol cars are usually a fair bit cheaper to buy and service it causes my stubborn side to choose them ( plus diesel smells )

I can see why the local authority are saying that and I agree with them. The S60 is cramped in the back and wouldn't seat 3 adults comfortably, I don't think anyway.
The S70 is alot more roomier and access to the boot is better than that of the S60 too.
I wouldn't go for a T6 (also came in XC90 Arb :)) mainly because of the horror stories I have heard in relation to early S80's and there complicated ECU's setup.
Go for a later S80 D5 if you can... teething problems were ironed out on those models and they are really roomy in the rear for you passengers.
Oh and don't forget you can get them remapped to produce some serious torque :D
Anyway, to answer your question i'd have the S70 all day long!

hi mate where you from i thought i was the only daft private hire driver to have petrol lol. personally i would go for s70 v70 s60 t5 as the t6 apparentley has a few question maks over the engine and the geartronic box so ive been told. i used to have an s80 2.9 not the t6 apparentley the t6 does the same mpg as the one i had which was 24mpg if you take your time the other reason i say s70 s60 v70 is theyll haddle alot better on the road the s80 is an executive saloon and is a bit ov a barge very comfortable though. I ve gat s70R which im more than happy with but like you say fuel is about 20-25mpg although mine is an auto hope this helps its your descion at the end ov the day though. welcome to the forum though
just edited this as ive just read the posts through as you can see im from newcastle and the council let the s60 on here theres a few on as well they are very small in side though hence why i havent got one as i love the shape i also had s80 d5 for awile and igot 45 - 50 mpg out ov my manual one it was chip to 200 bhp though proberbley was on par with t5 but as i said before they dont handle as well and the parts are cheaper for s70s

thanks, yeah i'm sure you will!
In light of what youve said your choice must be betwen either a s70 (or v70?) t5 or a s80 d5! :)
I think i'd go for the petrol.... :D
Post 155483 by lance on 2006-10-24 17:04:32
The T6 will do 25 mpg at a steady 105 mph 3000 rpm , around town expect around 16 mpg.
The 4 speed geartronic box is pants go for a D5 S80 , 2,9 non turbo or 2.5T .
Or even better an S70 T5 !!!!!

As i've had both a T5 and T6
depends on what you want T6 for comfort and one of the better Q cars or T5 for more involving drive.Petrol consumptiion in both depends on how hard you press the loud pedal.

youll find any spec volvo can do good high miles as long as there looked after ive only had mine for 6months just preference really my mates got s70 2.5 20valve non turbo and its got more miles than mine full leather and is running great also taxi. id just always wanted an R seen one could aford it so bought it to be honest diesel does make more sense in our job but like you dont like diesel fuel. i love the power ov the car though and the faces on the boy racers when an "old mans " car leaves them. i share the car with my dad so its on the road day and night (i do days dad does nights) so needed something to cope with the miles and it does any volvo does like i said before my s80 did the same and was fine the normal t5 is the same engine as mine though the R has lowered suspaension as standard so handles great good look in your search mate

Hi and welcome aboard.
I think the T6 came out with the models of the s80 and xc90, and I thinks they have a twin turbo?
The t5 however came out on most of the models, more common, and their is a lot of experience on this forum.....for help etc.
If your considering both options, how about this one, looking into the s60r, it's an animal, at around 300 bhp as standard, it would be sure to give you exactly what you want!!!!

Answer me one thing lads, why are many of the taxis in Newcastle better than the general cars in and around Durham. Must be good money is it?
To be honest am driving wagons and its decent money but I am sick of it, have considered taxi driving as a possible alternative, is it worth it?

hi mate the best way to make money as a taxi driver is to have your own car all paid for no hp aand the like then you can do ok but having said that i would recomend it if you can do something else. Ive been taxiing for 9 years my dads done it for 15years and the money was better when i first started doning it the money sounds fatatic till you relise that your working 10 or 12 hours aday sometimes more if i say my fuel this week was £240 thats for 4 shifts and then youve got the car insurance if i say mine is £355 amonth fully comp although theres me and my dad on the policy weve no noclaims and i ve got 6 points on my liecnce and a fault acciedent and ov course group 17 for the R. Tobe honest both ov us are sick ov doing it but once you start its hard to get out ov doing it cause your own boss and there is no other job where you can goto work and at the end ov the day come home potetually have a £100 pound cash in your wallet. Its your choice as you drive wagons you know how stressful it is driving all day add to wot you do customers constantly complaining your late or they have to catch train or plain in rush hour and expect you to do it in ten minutes. Wot i surgest you do is next time you get a taxi talk to the driver seriously not like peter kay lol hwen your sober as well i dont know alot about durham taxi wise just really newcastle. money is ok really and you dont answer to anybody if you dont want to go to work you just stay in bed lol but if your ill you dont gat sick pay or holiday pay or anything like that. hope this helps
ps if i wasnt taxi driver i would properley have been hgv driver did the course about 6 years ago but failed the test if ti was me i stay driving wagons but its your choice as for your first Q about cars its the fact that the test they go through its tighter than ordinary mot and its also a comfort thing as well your in the car alot so you have to be comfy

Oh well maybe not then.
Same sort of hours that I'm doing now for same sort of money, wouldn't be gaining much. Problem I have is that I work for a private haulier but we are on perminant contract hire to a mortar company (readymix/cemex), which is great at the moment - plenty of o/time, work every sunday for double time + decent bonus, so by the time we get paid we are on a good wage compared to normal drivers. However, there are rumours that cemex may get a fleet of their own wagons in to do our job meaning we will be either out on our ears or working directly for cemex on salary without bonus, double time etc - either way not a rosey future!!
Plus the stuff we carry is dirty & horrible and washing the wagon out every other day isn't a pleasant experience. You end up with more sand dunes in the bath than on the beach - lol!
PS. I know what you mean about passengers - used to be a bus driver in Durham!!!

hello mate just to back up the earlier comments if your getting by doing what your doing stick to it ive been driving taxis six year and my money is down quite a bit, you have to bear in mind that by nature of the job you really need to work weekends to earn enough i work all weekend till the end usually about five in the morning on fri and sat then till seven in the morn on sun night mon morn that equates to about 38 hours over three nights !!! not ideal for family life.dont let the posh cars fool you the lads driving the nice posh stuff are paying lots of pennies out each week thats why me and "kimbaleeg" both seem to have the same view buy something a bit tasty but a little older ( hence cheaper ) and you dont have the noose of hp on you so can afford a little more to the revenue in fuel ( robbing sods) .just something to ponder ive had three customers puke in my car ( two also wet thereselves at the same time) in three month id much rather clean up a cement wagon any day !but sorry to go on good luck in however you make ends meet
