Hi!
I'm JPW from Dublin. I don't have a Volvo but it seems pretty likely that I will soon. The wife wants a V70 (old shape) to replace her 306. I kind of fancy a T5 and so does she but funds may not stretch quite that far.
Anyway, I'll be trawling here to find some pointers on what to look for on these cars. Mind you if anyone wanted to save me the trawl and point me straight at a buyer's guide I wouldn't object  .

Welcome to the forum
From possibly your closest member....
You do really want a T5 (or a T4) over the other models. There not that much extra for a much more responsive drive.
Do a search on ETM failiures and make sure that the one you buy has either been looked at or been done. Apart from that look over the rest just like you'd look over any car...
Panel damage, oil leaking, interior damage that doesn't match the mileage... buy a car you are happy with and don't just opt for the first one you see...
They are robust cars, but not indestructable.... good luck with your purchase...

Hello JPW,
A very warm welcome to the forums.
I drive a V70 T5 SE (1999) so my (unbiased!!) advice would be for you to find the extra dosh and stretch to a T5 - you will not regret it if you do and you will always hanker after one if you don't.
This link should take you directly to a very good thread on what to look out for: http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/t7657-t5-buyers-guide-upto-2002.html
Good luck and see you around,
Cheers,
John.

Wow! Thanks for all the enthusiastic welcomes. Thats a great-looking buyer's guide so I'll have a thorough read of it. I'll let you know how I get on. I'll be looking here but also in the UK when I go over at Xmas. I'll wave at JUDGENINJA as I drive past if I get one!
The search is in its infancy. I drove a nice 2.0 auto but found it a bit sluggish (you'd have guessed that though!) and an R which was fast but an absolute dog. I'll be getting a friendly local Volvo dealer to keep an eye out for me but I think there are relatively few T5s here.

Hello again JPW,
JPW sounds a bit of a strange way of talking to you - What is your first name?!
Yeah, definitely try to get a T5 - it will be far better for you to wait a while and save up some more or, whatever, but once you have driven a decent T5 you will know it makes sense!
I read elsewhere that there are very few T5s in your neck of the woods so it may well be better to find one this side of the water. There are often good ones advertised on this site but as always - caveat emptor!!
I spent two years finding exactly what I wanted (on eBay, but did a deal privately!) - take your time and do your research, test drive as many as you can and go in with your eyes open but your wallet closed until you find the right car. Strangely enough, you will know for sure when you find a good one - guides are a good help but nothing compares to your gut instinct!
Good luck and take care.
Cheers,
John.

Yeah, I suppose JPW's a bit impersonal - my name's Jeremy.
Now for a look around . . .
