I'm looking at buying a V70 D5 03/04 which is the 160bhp odd one. The mileage on the ones I've looked at is around 145000. What do I need to watch out for on these cars? Its the Auto I'm looking at and prices are about £4500. Thanks Phill

In order of expense from personal experience with my '52 plate: Make sure the dash board works properly, all strands on the letters in the message box are working. If not that could be DIM failure. Apparently the DIM's with the silver rings around them are less likely to fail, an 03/04 might have this DIM already. Excessively whistling turbo- turbo on the way out. Oil weeping from bottom of intercooler- signs of the intercooler being split. Does it run straight and true or does it wander- signs that the wishbone bushes are worn. Clunks and hub clicks when taking off and reversing from stationary- XC90 hub bolts cure this. Top engine mounts and sub frame to gear box tie bars wear out quickly. Hope that helps. Lovely cars but very expensive when they go wrong.

Forgot to say are RAC/AA inspections worth the money? I've currently got a Jaguar XJR so hopefully it won't cost anymore than that to repair?

Inspections are worth while if you need to haggle with a garage, other advice would be buy as new as you can afford. Slight facelift late 2003, onwards different mirrors etc. 145K plus I would be looking at a warranty on the Clutch and DMF if possible

Looking at the auto so at least I don't have these to worry about.

I know I would forget about D5s and keep the Shag, I really miss mine a hell of a lot, If you must come back to a volvo(like I had to) try a phase 2 and a remap and the fuel economy will still impress espeically after an XJR!

I would love to keep the Jag but its costing alot to run, around home I'm lucky to get 15mpg. I'm working away and struggle to fit 3 peoples gear in the boot. I have a good Volvo dealer to who will pick the car up and leave me a courtsey car even though I'm 40min away and Mill Garages are closer. I've had some real good fun in the Jag generally followed by some big bills! Forgot to say is Marbles your dog Lance and what type is she?
