Hi, The Police make me laugh. If I put a youtube clip of me driving like that Kn@@ in the Volvo they would be straight round to my house and have me banged up for Reckless Driving. So why oh why do they think they can do it? Does their training give them 'Special Powers' ? I do hope that WHEN PC Nathan Crain has his BIG accident nobody else gets hurt! H

what the heck they were doing pulling in front of the lorry into lane one when there was a bus in front in that lane i have no idea. Lack of forward vision there i'm afriad and pretty piss poor

I wonder how they got permission to post that! Not the worst driving I've seen but the sharp move back into lane one was a bit starnge.

I give it till the end of the week and their professional standards lot will have that off the web. And as far as that lane change and braking effort, WTF was that all about? Must have given that guy in the HGV a heart attack! I applaud their efforts the help some poor bugger out, just question why the hell they felt the need to post the video of it....

Post 218313 by jimka on 2009-03-15 21:35:05

taking a more diplomatic view of the video, i presume its a training video, where the s60 in front is the 'getaway' driver.. the move back into lane one was to try and fool the copper he might leave at the exit. although i've seen some pretty crap driving - not all my own, i must say; it wasn't that bad, and i've seen plenty worse.

Hi Guys Just wanted to clear up a few things, as there seems to be a general ‘whipping boy’ attitude here. I am the ambulance driver in the video. First and foremost, please remember I was transporting an URGENT organ to a dying child – so before we go accusing anyone of poor quality driving, let’s remember the reason for the speed and run in the first place. If it were your child, would you want any less effort than that which was shown in this video? Incidentally the organ was delivered in time for a successful transplant to this EXTREMELY sick child. Secondly, much comment is made about moving into lane one after the lorry overtake. The reason for this, as is self evident, was that the police driver realised that I, the ambulance being escorted, wouldn’t have been able to make the junction in time. Importantly, he also realised that the single lane off ramp was being blocked by a car, therefore made an immediate judgement decision not to go off and stay on the main carriageway until the next junction – where it was safer! This therefore was the reason for the move into lane one in the first place, in readiness to leave the dual carriageway. The fact that there was a bus in lane one some quarter mile away is irrelevant, and was never a factor as the intention was to go off at the junction before the bus. I’d have thought to any experienced emergency service drivers that such a manoeuvre would have been self explanatory simply by looking at the video. This of course may be where the problems lie in the first instance. Both drivers are trained to extremely high standards, so the comments about ‘reckless driving’ “special powers’ and ‘why they do it’ etc frankly sound to me like sour grapes. Perhaps Hamish would think differently if it were his child dying and in desperate need of an organ, although I truly pray and hope he will never find himself in such a position. Perhaps in future some thought will go into such critical and ill-advised comments when the writers don’t have ANY of the facts surrounding same. As to the comments regarding why the video was posted, simple: they are used as training tools by me – a class one advanced driving instructor with 15 years experience! The camera is always on and records all vehicle movements for evidential value. So please people – think a little more next time and ask yourselves the question “could there possibly be a reason for this” don’t just go around making wildly inaccurate and unsubstantiated commentary, or at least not until you've been trained to the same level of driving skill as we have. Our driving may not be perfect all the time, and I'll be the first to admit it, but we DO NOT expect such biased and blatantly obvious criticism for simply doing our jobs - to help save lives - remember it could well be your's next time.

Woah!!!! Ease up mate. Yes we did comment on the video, and we commented on what we saw. I too drive under blue lights and have been doing so from Fire appliances to my current V70 since the late 80s. I think if you read the comments they all have a common theme, in that we wondered if it was wise to post this without any explanation. If your boss is happy for the video to be posted and the Police are happy with the quality of the driving, who are we to argue? However before you explained the circumstances (if indeed your post is fact) and on what we saw, the late move to the inside lane looked a bit bad. This is not a 'Max Power' forum in which case you'd have got the usual trite comments such as "my Saxo's faster!"

Post 221688 by Paramed-one on 2009-04-04 14:00:25

The problem was that comments were not based on fact. The video was posted by someone who did not post the original information attached to it which described in detail the overtake manouevre and the reason for the decision not to take it at the last minute. If the original poster had taken the time to actually give ALL the info available then perhaps we would not be viewing comments such as that posted by Hamish, which were supercilious, unwarranted and unnaceptable. So as you can now see a full explanation was actually available all along, it just was not presented to you, and accordingly commentary was given without being in possession of all the facts - and opinions made on that basis. In fact your comment was the only one which was neutral and simply said "was a bit strange" - fair enough, that invites comment as to why - which i have given, but it's the others which are simply not on - "why do they think they can do it", "knob in a volvo", "special powers" etc, there's no way I'm going to sit back and allow anyone to call me a knob, not when I'm risking my life to save others - would you?

It wont let me watch the clip

Post 221692 by Paramed-one on 2009-04-04 14:11:51

Hi Pete, That's because I have disabled the external third party embedding codes. The original posting did not include important and very necessary information to explain what was actually on the video, and this led to critical and somewhat rude comments being made by some who didn't have the courtesy to check their facts BEFORE posting, and that really hacked me off big style - particularly when all we're trying to do is help save lives!!

Post 221694 by t5 pete on 2009-04-04 14:24:07

Ok thankyou and keep up the good work, I cannot totaly comment as i have not seen the footage but in all walks of life i think you will find people comment before the facts are read or truly understood i my self have done this in the past and spoken out before thinking or getting the true facts, i wouldnt take the comments to heart. The people that do the job you do deserve a gold star. My grandma is in the hospital at the moment with heart failure and if it wasnt for the quick respons of the 999 team and ambulance service she might have not been here today. Pete

If you do not want people to pass comment then do not post on the world wide web. If you were posting it as a "training tool" then is is no reason for it to be in the public domain of YouTube (as you have now realised and altered) You cannot blame people for having an opinion on a video that you posted irresponsibly. As you can see we have a few emergeny service folk on here and no one can dispute the fantasic job you all do but that doesn't mean that people are not allowed to comment on a peice of material posted publically.

Post 221697 by Paramed-one on 2009-04-04 14:40:57

Fair comment Mrs Mopp, and I don't blame people for making comment, as long as the comments contain constructive criticism. I'm the first to put my hand up when I do something wrong - and believe me I have done many times! What does annoy me is when people start out with personal insults - that's not opinion, it's crass insensitivity - and as I'm sure your emergency service members would agree with me, to have someone calling you a 'knob' when he neither knows you, your background/training or indeed the facts behind the video, which were fully available, then that's simply not on. There's a world of difference between reasonable opinion fairly made and personal insults.

I'm with Paramed-one on this one. I work in TV and have spent the last two years working on a programme where we go out with all the emergency services. In my opinion the driving skills of all these guys is exceptional. I personally have been out on a call where the police driver I was with was having to escort an ambulance with a child that had been run over in it. He was having to 1- co-ordinate the entire operation. That meant talking to the the other police car behind and the control room and relay info to the ambulance. 2- he had to deal with some relatives who were trying to keep up with the ambulance in their 4x4. 3 - Deal with idiots on the road who would pull out in front of him. 4 - Manage to give a running commentary of what he was doing. All this while driving at high speed through rush hour traffic in rain on a motorway. I was amazed. I know I couldn't do it. So for someone to show this on youtube so people could see what these people have to do all day everyday and then be called a k**b is just unbelievable. What the hell do they know. You can't judge distances on camera as there is no depth of field and the lorry driver should be aware that a police car is likely to have to do things very quickly and make split second decisions. Paramed, ignore the idiots who critisise and keep up the good work. I have witnessed first hand how difficult your job is.

Thanks Mikouk, You've managed to put my feelings and sentiments over very well indeed for which i am extremely grateful. It really cheesed me right off to read those comments, but all the more so when they were made without any of the facts - it almost appeared that they were so gratuitously made, that i did wonder what axe the poster had to grind with the police/emergency services. Jeez, after all we were putting our lives on the line in order to save a desperately ill child who was dying. As we were on route I received a call telling me he had deteriorated to the extent that he was in theatre awaiting our arrival with his transplant organ - and basically advised that if we didn't make it by a certain time, to switch off the lights and abort the run as it would be too late! And for that we get called a knob! Unfortunately Hamish does not appear to want to take the opportunity of explaining his comments to me - wonder why? Thanks again for your eloquent explanation - but at the end of the day, it's still just a job - but a damned difficult one at times in jobs like this one.
Looks to me like Hamish is criticising the driving of the Volvo police car, not the ambulance driver, and lets be honest, like all blue light runs, it left room for improvement. I am sure everyone on here is grateful for the efforts the services make to try and keep them safe, and that they put themselves in harms way to do so. Had the full circumstances been revealed before hand, the comments may have been less critical. The real point is, the video should nt have been posted publically, if the publics comments were nt wanted. Thanks for what you do, keep doing it under the knowledge the world's a better place for people who do step up. Rob

Thank you for your comments Rob - I know that generally we are appreciated, and as I have said before, we all make mistakes, and I'd be the first to admit to that. In this situation, I should perhaps have considered that someone may have copied the video and not bothered about the commentary that went with it, thereby causing the problem which arose here. Thanks again

Post 221855 by gazjacko on 2009-04-05 12:18:14

some more reasoned comments thank goodness!! if kn*b is the worst thing that I ever get called by another driver then i'll be happy. I've just had another instance where my driving judgment has led to other drivers reacting poorly. I've just been on a 'shout' which involved a fair bit of B-road, so under 'blues and twos' I'd overtaken a number of cars when I came to a long straight and (to the overtaken drivers) I slowed suddenly to about 30mph and all lights and sirens off! The driver behind me (Astra covered in glue then driven through Halfords) who had pulled over for me 20 secs before gives me the Gareth Hunt coffee bean sign (if you don't understand ask your dad). If he had taken the time to look a few hundred yards ahead he'd have seen the procession of horse riders approaching. A few seconds later I was past the horses (the riders all acknowledged my care in passing them) then it was lights back on and a bit later the sirens. I'm not sure but the Astra driver may have been trying to keep up with me to have a moan. perhaps it was the extra weight of the bodykit but I soon lost him.:wave23d:

Post 221857 by Paramed-one on 2009-04-05 12:34:32

Unfortunately I am old enough to remember the 'coffee bean' hand gesture shake! and well done for taking care with the horse riders. I had a situation recently in Leeds when I had to collect an organ at Jimmy's, driving out all lights and horns on, through first red light, around a corner - and what do i find approaching, yes, middle of the city, a horse and trap. Rapid decision, everything off, speed right down, and an acknowledgement from the trap driver and passenger for our courtesy. As both of us can show with these examples, it doesn't take much, just a little forethought. Cheers mate.
