And I don't think he was breaking the awd (might have been auto too).

What's happened mate?

The splines have gone on the connecting sleeve between the gearbox and the angle gear/transfer box (small part can't handle the torque). Thing is it has also stripped the splines on the output shaft on the gearbox. A new sleeve is £85, but am having trouble finding a gearbox. Wibren has one, but he's in Holland (and from what I remember in geography, thats somewhere near Australia LOL) But then the other problem is that if I get a gearbox, will the splines on that be the same, or at least part worn. It still drives in FWD mode, but wheelspin is silly cuz I've got the MBC on (ecu can't limit power low down) and I've got a smaller turbo which spools up quicker, so I've only got to hit a drain cover and its off (not even that in this crappy weather!). Admire your resolve mate. Ever thought of gettin' a 2wd monster instead?

Yeah I've thought about it, but I like the stability of the awd, and I'm really missing the grip. That and the fact that there aren't many awd 850s around, and I like to think that I'm preserving a piece of history, a unique piece of engineering that is disappearing fast (I know it sounds stupid, but hey). So I don't mind all the work it requires, it makes me happy.

have you tried "find-a-part", or what about looking for a M66 AWD gearbox?

Post 252269 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-08-27 18:24:11

I'm gonna try some local gearbox places, see if anyone has got any in. Yeah have thought about an M66, saw a thread on another forum ages ago about the conversion to an M66, but can't remember if it needed different driveshafts. Besides, the M66 has the same first and top gear ratios as mine has.

You would need either a S60 or Crocus ST clutch tho. Your right about the ratios, just thought it might be an option if you can't find a M58 (& an extra gear is a nice gimmick lol)

Looks like all I need to do is fabricate a gearbox mount, or get one from an S60R awd, and modify some bits. http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php/topic/91903-m66-awd-in-98-v70-awd-xc/
