I need to get some gearbox oil, and my "information" tells me its 5W30 oil I need. Is there any difference between 5W30 engine oil and gearbox oil?

Gearbox oil is different stuff completely, It has different properties. You cant put engine oil in 850 gearbox. I think one of the only cars you could was the old Austin Mini with an A series engine as the engine and gearbox oil are in the same sump.
Yeah thats what I thought. Had a look at halfords yesterday, but couldn't find any gear oil at all! I guess I'm just not looking hard enough.
Dexron IIE Auto Fluid, 7.6 ltrs. For the Automatics ( Obviously ;) ) And Volvo Synthetic Gearbox Oil ( 97308 ), 2.1ltrs. For the Manual M56 Box :D
I've been running 75W90 in my gearbox for the last two yeas without any problem.
im thinking about changing my gearbox oil and need to no which oil to use thanks
The Volvo Synthetic Gearbox Oil ( 97308 ) as posted earlier is obviously the reccommended oil, it is however long life and does not need changing throughout the box's life. It does cost about £40 a litre IIRC so is heavily overpriced. Like bomb my box currently has 75W90 in it, even using non Volvo oil changes are not going to be needed for at least 80k I would imagine.
I couldn't find any spec listed for my 'box a few years ago and ended up using Volvo's own which was expensive ! The comma site I often use at work doesn't have gear oil listed in their products for the 850 which usually means there is no alternative spec yet interestingly for the phase 1 S40 2.0l 16 valve it lists 75w90, is that not the same gearbox ?
In the end I got a big tub of 5w30 engine oil and so far I've had no problems and I've got some left over in case I want to change it, or something drastic goes wrong again with the awd system.

Yep engine oil, the Volvo geabox oil debate has been going on for many years, I read on another volvo forum that someone used 5w30, so I thought I'd give it a try
I wouldn't - you are in danger of ruining your gearbox. Even if you get another from a scrapper, it's a big job to remove and refit. Use the right oil!!

I changed the gearbox oil in mine when the cluch was changed at 140k (also did it at 110k) and it makes a discernable difference to the shift quality. OK, the Volvo oil was £40, but if it prolongs the life of the 'box? I also use Valvoline 5W40 Syn Power fully synthetic (in the engine, not the screen wash bottle...) and that's not cheap either, but, at 153k its still not using oil.
