My 850 has been losing a lot of water lately, with a lot coming out of the expansion tank, and I have bought a new tank to put on thinking that the old one is cracked. But tonight when I fired it up at work, the engine misfired slightly which makes me think there's water in one of the cylinders.
So I'm gonna compression test it tomorrow, and get prepared for the worst (and by that I mean get the bits ready for a stripdown yeehaa).

hav u checked the seal on the resoviour cap as that can fail & lose the water.

Its a new green cap I bought about 3 months ago (albeit a pattern part from PFV so not sure on the quality)

Have you checked the oil for mayo?.
Post 270861 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-24 22:57:44
No mayo, checked it yesterday and again tonight.
Just got back from my uncles, had to pull in at a petrol station for water, I only filled it this morning.

Sounds more like an air lock than a headgaskette, however have you tried taking to a garage and getting a sniff test done?.
Post 270868 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-24 23:13:15
Got no money for that really (well, not now LOL).
I'll give it a good goin over tomorrow, if the weather lets me. I'll fit the new water tank I got from Rufe too (£23 delivered, bargain! and genuine too with the sticker on, aftermarket ones are £25!)
Post 270941 by leet5r on 2009-11-25 13:11:20
could be the thermostat causen it to pressureize the system
Post 270943 by Volvostorm on 2009-11-25 13:25:52
I know when I changed my rad, bled it ok, then 2 days later the low coolant light came on :(
Top it up, been ok since, seems like these engine know how to airlock well!
Post 270944 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-25 13:26:28
Tried that, brand new thermostat fitted last week.
Post 270946 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-25 13:28:14
When I have been sat at traffic lights or in a queue and I pull away theres a water/air rushing in the heater matrix
Post 270947 by T5ER on 2009-11-25 13:34:02
i had that on my R was a air lock took about a hour to get rid of it, left the car running with top of the tank and just checked it and kept topping it up
Post 270949 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-25 13:38:11
Just waitin for the rain to stop and I'm gonna run out and sort it, change over the tank and bleed the system hopefully.

Im keeping a very close eye on this thread as im having to top mine up every week near enough. :grumpy:
I cant see any sign of leaks anywhere, the thermostat reading on the dash never goes above " 3 o'clock " it very rarely even gets that high, only when sat in traffic for a bit.
The warning light will come on the dash if i accelerate hard or go up hill, i top up the bottle ( expansion tank ) and it'll stay off for a few days.
No " Mayo " to speak of either.
Post 270954 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-25 13:44:03
Thats how mine started cameron

:grumpy:
Ive still got the old style top for the bottle but i do have the green one somewhere but no seal so ive just bought Martybelfasts green one instead.
Ive even put dry cardboard ( a large box folded flat ) under the car and run it for half an hour, no wet patches whatsoever, although there was a couple of oil spots
I need my cam cover gasket redone ( the liquid one ) it'll have to wait till after crimbo though, just keep checking the oil every couple of days.

av just done my head gasket the other day. it split a pipe and dropped its water lol. but some 1 never put the water level sensor in , so a dont know if it was low on water , and its gets driven hard very hard like so. any ways a got the pipe on and it was boiling over the header tank , exhaust gases gettin into the water system some where . got the head skimmed and pressure tested and back together it went , when testin the car to make sure every thing was sorted. on tick over the car was sound till about 15 mins when the thermostat should have opened then the water level started to rise , new thermostat in and its sweet as a nut . only thing now is a cant get the water level sensor off the dash and its got a new sensor in. and it the gauge gets to 3 o clock after about 5 mins of driven , any ideas

Have you guys checked for damp carpets. Daft answer i know, but the heater matrix will lose LOADS of water if knackered
Post 270965 by cameron on 2009-11-25 14:07:52
Thats a good point actually, i have noticed my windows steaming up a bit more that usual :(
Id better go ckeck ....................
Post 270967 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-25 14:29:21
I was thinking that, but I've got no misting, and no smell inside the car. But I'll check anyways.
Right, I'm gonna get layered up and out to get this thing sorted.
Post 270979 by cameron on 2009-11-25 15:29:38
Right then No wet floor :)
So what should i be checking ?
Thermostat, Rad for leaks

I didnt get any misting from mine at first, but the carpet was well soggy. Suppose it depends on where the leak is in the matrix. Could be a split hose to it. :(

Rad, ALL hoses for splits. Yours could be leaking onto something hot and evaporating. My mates BM had an airlock in his radiator, causing it to back pressure out of the top (the overflow pipe) but only when it got hot!
PIA or what!

Lee, I'm not loosing any water, and I don't have wet floors but I do have a nasty smell in the car and steaming windows, it's defo the heater matrix.

OK, new tank fited and I started her up and left her running with the tank lid off. There was nothing for about 10 minutes, then there was some gurgling and the tank level dropped right down.
I left it running some more, then I took it for a drive round the block. No leaks or steam from the tank now, so fingers crossed it has worked. The old tank needed replacing anyway, it was brown and crappy.
Post 271037 by Volvostorm on 2009-11-25 20:51:36
Fingers crossed :)
This is what mine did, as said before, been ok since.
Post 271049 by cameron on 2009-11-25 21:46:21
Ive no strange smells, no wet carpets but i'll take the cap off the resivoir tomorrow and let it run, see if theres any air blocks in there.
Post 271051 by Tomcat on 2009-11-25 21:50:54
Glad you seem to have got it sorted bomb.
While we're on the subject, how long does everyone's car take to warm up?, mine seems to take forever. I can drive 20 miles on the motorway and it will still be only just into the red, I'm pretty sure the thermostat is sticking but being as the bolts holding the cover on are seized it's going to have to wait until I can get a new housing.
Post 271053 by Volvostorm on 2009-11-25 21:53:22
Mine's quite quick, 1.5miles its upto normal temperature, takes 3/4mile to warm enough to run on gas, which it set at 40c
Post 271074 by cameron on 2009-11-25 23:46:44
Id go with about 2 - 3 miles, usually still in city traffic so a lot of stop start, probably more time sat still than actually moving :(
Then it sits just under " 3 O'clock "
Post 271083 by Dangerous Dave on 2009-11-26 00:30:18
Mine takes about 3 to 4 mins, which is about 3/4 of a mile (mostly side streets and traffic queues)
Checked it again tonigh, and everything seems to be ok, the was a little amount of water under the cap rim, but it was clear, so I think it was overspill from when I was filling it. I think it needs a little more bleeding though.
It looks good too, nice shiny new clean tank and nice deep blue coolant mix

Deffo your thermostat TC, i had the same on my C70. Only a £12.00 part, but yes, those bolts are a b*tch to get off :(
Post 271116 by Tomcat on 2009-11-26 09:59:13
Daft thing is I've had a thermostat sat in the garage for about 6 months, just can't get the damn bolts off and I don't want to force them as I don't fancy snapping them.

Have ya tried a long bar, like a torque wrench??? Dont know what the NM's are for it, but mine where VERY stiff. I thought i was gonna snap mine, but I warmed the car up first, WD40'd them, and off they went with a CRACK!
Bit of a b*tch if they snap though
