Bin off line for nearly 3 weeks now and 105 quid down thanks to Mcafee security centre. They do daily updates one of which wiped loads of data inc ip address off my pc. Being a technophobe i had to pay Dell to fix the problem which has literally gone on for nearly 3 weeks. I wont be subscribing with them again.:nono: I'm not a happy chap.

Best thing for anything Norton or McAfee junk is the bin !!!!!!! Absolutely dire; how they think they can charge £40 for the software then christ-knows-how-much / yr to renew is a joke... If you are on Vista or 7, MS's own security essentials takes some beating... If on XP then AVG (gotten abit bloaty now), Avira or Avast.

I have 3 pc's in my home office one is an ACER lapton with Vista (crappee home premium) My partner uses it more than me. I subscribe to McAfee for 3 PC's have done for many years. 3 days ago turned on Laptop, fecked!!!! went into safe mode and did a restore back 5 days. I have just updated my McAfee to the latest version so downloaded updated version on laptop, works OK so touch wood no more problems.

Norton and McAfee are generally speaking a bit pants. AVG free is good, the best utility on the planet is MALWAREBYTES - for the non technical, it is a bug buster that digs out worms and viruses infrecting your PC that Norton/McAfee etc etc do not stop. It has salvaged at least four PCs and laptops I have come across and best of all, is free (although it is so good I subscribe to the auto update version at £20 a year). CC Cleaner is a good free clean up programme too. I think I am going off thread so will shut up...

I don't think you are off thread Crap Cleaner is very good I also have used register cleaners for years. McAfee included a pc maintenance facility but they have now dropped it. I also use Magic Defrag.

I will second Microsoft Security Esentials and also Crap cleaner and Malwarebytes, use all three and clean as a whistle.

My AV is Avira's Antivir, ok theres an ad popup on the free version, but thats only when it updates, and I've run it for two years without any problems.

Also suggest using Mozilla Firefox as your browswer not Internet Explorer. Much less prone to bugs. You can download it and run it alongside IE until you decide IE really is rather pants by comparison.
