Okay my speedo does not work.. i have had enough throwing money at it to sort it.. So far the clocks have been changed. ( i found the abs light had been removed) had the ABS unit soldered as per normal fault. still had abs fault. found to be some cack in the plug for some of the connections. all cleaned and now okay. no longer have the abs light up.. i can turn on and off the traction control as req the ABS work but still no speedo.... no mpg trip etc either only the fuel in tank and temp works.. please someone solve my problem.. or have i gotta go hunting for a broken wire?? Many thanks,...:worship:

Post 308154 by Pistol Pete on 2010-05-12 10:40:28

i was told the speedi came from the abs on these... cheers

Sounds like there's no power to those clocks (or something along those lines, especially if you've replaced everything else), especially if the trip/mpg thing isn't working. Just seen your car is a C70, will have a look for some info.

sorry my car is a v70. t5 1998.. ermm there all the mpg bit works.. i.e. just the 3 dashes on it where its not reading.. the only thing i have noticed is ont he top right hand side of the clocks there a 2 largish metal pins (like the male part of a spade connector) but nothing connected to them... should there be ?? cheers

I replaced the whole dash twice on mine. Each lasted about 6 months then would slowly die. Last one worked fine untill the speedo stopped and the revcounter read double. No fuel gauge or mileage reading. I suspect that the diodes were fried on the alternator which slowly cooked the dash electrics with rogue ac, but I never proved it! Replace the dash, check ebay :)

already replaced it once.. stayed the same as it is now... cheers

Post 308483 by Vikingxl on 2010-05-13 16:31:56

When you replaced the clocks did you change the ABS sender unit on top of the clocks over and do you have another one spare to try changing? I thought i had some pictues here of the clocks but ive lost them

Post 308493 by Pistol Pete on 2010-05-13 17:50:01
the only thing i have noticed is ont he top right hand side of the clocks there a 2 largish metal pins (like the male part of a spade connector) but nothing connected to them...
i've got them spare on BT as well & everything works fine, i was told 1 is a speed pulse & the other RPM to wire accessories to

Post 308498 by Pistol Pete on 2010-05-13 18:10:14

hmmm speed pulse off one of them... wonder if its worth tryin to get a reading?? wonder what the pulse reading is/should be...
hmmm speed pulse off one of them... wonder if its worth tryin to get a reading?? wonder what the pulse reading is/should be...
just been out & had alook, the 2 pins are connected together & labeled "12 pulses DIG OUTPUT" which could be referring to speed pulse

Is there any other member near you that could swap abs units and check that the unit itself is 100% its only a small possibility but maybe something else was damaged when the solder repair was done

Post 308517 by Pistol Pete on 2010-05-13 19:23:40

i wondered that too..... The speedo did not work before it had the soldering done... no members near me i know of.. is the unit easy to change?? worht buying one?? and might it be worth joining those pics together?? Mr fandango? i think thats what you mean that they are joined as in touching each other joined by a wire? cheers

Post 308520 by p fandango on 2010-05-13 19:37:54
and might it be worth joining those pics together?? Mr fandango? i think thats what you mean that they are joined as in touching each other joined by a wire?
it comes out of the PCB as one big tab then splits into the 2 spade connectors so both doing the same thing, i did try to take a pic but theirs that much gunk on the windscreen it wouldn't focus on the cluster

Post 308533 by Pistol Pete on 2010-05-13 20:46:29

okay cool.. thanks.. hmm abs unit change then i think?? any one got one they know is good.. and is it an easy swap?

I can only speak about the Estate models, we still have a V70 T5 CD P1. I believe it is the same as the C70 T5 for the instrument cluster (someone correct me if I am wrong) One of our V70 T5's had a persistent problem with non functioning speedometer and no cruise control. It went to the Dealer and the Dealer was just wanting to throw money at it (mine) so we fixed it ourselves the things checked/changed were as follows, 1. Instrument Cluster main fuse in the back of the unit checked (OK) 2. Instrument Cluster tried from one of the other cars (No change) 3. ABS unit soldered Speedo worked for about 200mtrs (now we suspected the ABS unit so swapped with one from the other car, No Change) 4. Finally changed both front ABS sensors (Fixed) The ABS sensors we actually got from a crashed 850 at the local breakers, still on the car and still working total cost was about £20 that was at least 8 years ago.

hmmm.. okay.. did it not throw up the ABS ligth with the front sensors fault>? as i have no ABS light fault anymore.. cheers :) i may be a cheap thing to try

I don't know about the V/C70 but on the S80 I would have said it was the DIM Module (Drivers Information Module) This shows up the faults ect so the driver can see them, There was a write up on the VOC, S80 web site. Here's a few of them. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/search.php?searchid=1011681 Joe.

Is your cat a 4.4 car or an early me7 car and did the dash come off an r with the same type of injection system? Now you solderd the ABS have you tryed your orginal dash back in the car? By the way the black box on top ot the dash is the reciver unit for the alarm remots (note not the control box) Where about are you as I have a '97 and '98 dash you could try. Regards Rogerb

Just a shot in the dark but when the key Sensor ring on the steering is worn the ABS can stop working together with the clocks, if when driving just rotate the ignition key very slightly to the left and see if the abs light comes up and then when returning goes out. I had this problem in my previous t5 [pre ME7] was cured by replacing the Ring.
