Well Volvrat I has passed away and I am now breaking her for parts :( So bring on Volvrat II!! :D :D The spirit of the rat shall live on!!! Volvrat II has already gained the name of Zippy Lea too :) Went to auction today, and picked up a 1997 940 SE wagon, for £325!!!!!!!! 1 previous owner, 145k on the clock, really happy with it. Got a few issues with her though, like the tail gate handle doesn't work on the outside, and some of the lights on the dash don't work, but otherwise, it's all pretty sweet. Redblock turbo lump, not too bad condition. Bit tatty on the exhaust system, so that'll get ripped off and a straight through pipe will be installed, and the paintwork is pretty scratched and tatty too, so it'll all be going matt black again, but no rust this time. Interior isn't too bad at all so will keep that as it is pretty much. Gonna stick the 15G turbo off the 850 T5 on it as well as the manual boost controller and increase the boost a bit. Got my sounds to stick in there too, and the roof rack to chuck up top again too :D Best bit is, I have the whole car to get to a suitable ratty standard, by the 8th of August for Retro Rides show at Haynes Motor Museum!! So with my days off, that works out as 5 full days for: - Respray - ICE install - Fitting of roof rack, air horns, steelies and other bits And hopefully time for a straight through exhaust to be sorted out too :) Image Image Image Image

Post 321883 by Al115 on 2010-07-20 06:46:08

Go for the rust too. That was awesome on the last one :D Good luck with the project.

Post 321886 by claymore on 2010-07-20 07:29:18

I look forward to seeing it at the gathering.

Post 321887 by t5 pete on 2010-07-20 07:48:56

looks good i your going back to steelies you will get around £100 for those alloys on ebay as there quite sought after

Post 321947 by 850 2.5 10v on 2010-07-20 15:01:31

Good luck with it. I will have to remember to keep checking it on older cars on the forum - never been on this bit ever!

Post 321952 by T5frankie on 2010-07-20 15:25:39

nice one one mate
I will have to remember to keep checking it on older cars on the forum - never been on this bit ever!
LMAO!! Yea, you better!! Haha! Cheers guys, she will be going full on stealth battle effect. Like a proper Mad Max vehicle. I won't do the rust, cos I've done that one already now. But have you ever seen a 940 with steel mesh riot shield over the windshield? ;) Just one of the many plans I have for this wagon :D

Post 322442 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-22 22:17:54

Started with the matt black today. Can't do too much as I'm still waiting for the log book to come through so I can change the colour, but did the alloys today, the sill below the doors, and the lower half of the front and rear bumpers. I'm going to do the roof, and below the bump strips on the doors. Before: Image After some matt black paint: Image And a nice pic I rather like :D Image

Post 322445 by brett craig on 2010-07-22 22:23:48

this needs a folding external bbq on the boot, just like top gear !!!
this needs a folding external bbq on the boot, just like top gear !!!
and a bumper dumper lmfao

Post 322452 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-22 22:44:32

There are plans for a BBQ dude ;)

Post 322840 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-25 00:50:18

Well I've been playing a bit today and really happy with the result of a day's work! Done the audio install (just gotta run an RCA lead for the sub amp, and install the stereo tomorrow and it's complete) and done more matt blacking too. Gonna do a bit more matt blacking tomorrow too. I want to do the whole car already, but I can't yet as I don't have the log book to change the colour :( So just have to do as much as I can really LOL Couple of pics for y'all of my audio install :) Image Image And done a little bit more matt blacking too, now done from the top of the bump strips down, done the fuel filler flap too, and put another of my warning labels on, a flammable liquid one again :) Image Image

Post 322844 by 850t5 on 2010-07-25 01:58:37

Looking good mate. How long till your next drag?

Post 322846 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-25 02:12:31

This one's gonna be set up for drift, not drag. It drifts quite nicely as standard actually, just needs quite a bit more power though to hold the rear end out :D

Post 322847 by 850t5 on 2010-07-25 02:27:53

I can't wait to see the vids to that :D Used to have some sideways fun in a old 1.8 sierra saphire :insane: You can't beat it! Keep up the good work lol

Post 322853 by claymore on 2010-07-25 09:45:44

I hope your going to put it on the track at the Gathering.

Post 322861 by smithy on 2010-07-25 12:06:01

you have a locker diff in that car best to take governer out and have it locked 100 percent of the time.bring the car to santapod

Post 322886 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-25 16:58:07

Smithy, how to I take the governer out to lock the diff 100% of the time? Going to be doing it as a drift barge. Roof rack will be on it too, so that'll be great fun!! Once I've got the rad replaced (cos it leaks a bit) and replaced the cam cover gasket, I'll see about upping the boost. Need to install a boost gauge into it too as it doesn't have one at the moment. Been a bit busy today too, painting the car. This is how she looks now :D Image

Post 322894 by smithy on 2010-07-25 19:35:10

that looks mad mate lol and i like it .if you go on turbobricks on the front page it has a thread on modding the g80 locker which you have got.you will see a massive difference when you up the turbo to 15 psi mate.you are only running 4 psi at mo but it might be an idea to fit a stronger actuator like the 1 off your 15g to see if it fits if not then get 1 off the hpt version of your car hope this helps.

Post 322897 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-25 19:51:51

Cheers mate. Yea, I realized I have the LPT when I did some searching and found out the HPT ones have the boost gauge. I thought it was HPT cos it does shift a bit, so I really can't wait to crank the boost up to 15psi!!!! I'll go have a look on Turbo Bricks now and see about modding the locker. Is it hard to do? (guessing you've done it yourself) Good point about the actuator, I'll see if that fits. If it does fit then that's a good mod for people to try :) I've also read about using the MAF from the 960 on the 940 as it's bigger or something, so when running higher boost, you don't get the fuel cut kick in. Is it worth doing?

Post 322914 by smithy on 2010-07-25 21:32:11

its only worth putting 960 3in maf if you are going for alot bigger turbo ,injectors etc.i would keep with your standard maf for up to 250 bhp after that it may be worth considering .also you have a none chipable ezk box because your using l.h.2.4 jetronic which has a fuel ecu and a ignition box which is called a ezk box.if you wanted to chip yours change the ezk box off the earlier gold ezk box which is chipable.im going standalone this winter so i have a set of chips for your car that i might sell.

Post 322924 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-25 22:18:19

Doesn't the 2.4 learn though, so when you increase the boost or have a higher fuel rate from improved injectors, it learns these changes? I'm aiming for about 250hp really so no point worrying about the MAF then. On a budget with the build though. 15psi boost out the 13C turbo, maybe stick the 15G turbo on if required. Blue injectors, and a straight through exhaust. Should do the job really shouldn't it?

Post 322958 by smithy on 2010-07-26 08:52:37

its not so much the fueling its the ezk box when they are chiped they give a better ignition curve and the fuel ecu that has got a rev limit of 6200rpm but when chipped it raises the rev limit to 7000 rpm +if you want 250 whp then 15g/me7 blues/bigger exhaust/fpr and the standard ecu will learn that setup .but the chips help the car run better thats all eventhough they didnot work on my setup.i was pushing 300+bhp fly with my setup.

that will be some craic,,,,,lol

Lotta photos, but nice photos of work in progress on the new side exit exhaust. 100% custom fabricated by the guys down at Incarsolutions in Crayford, Kent (01322 274 462) and it sounds IMMENSE!!!! Post 323261 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-27 22:48:54

Hahaa, that's cos there's no cat, muffler or baffle  Immense performance increase though!

Post 323265 by danny-R on 2010-07-27 23:00:34

crazy.....lol keep it up

Post 323267 by t5 pete on 2010-07-27 23:00:57

I have the older housing for a 15g which will fit straight onto your 960 down pipe and not need any mods if you intrested send me a pm

Post 323274 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-27 23:43:43

Danny, cheers, I will keep it up :D Pete, do you mean 960 or 940? Cos I have a 940. I thought the 15G would bolt straight on for the 940 B230FT engine?

Post 323352 by smithy on 2010-07-28 13:31:23

it will only bolt straight on if the 15g has a conical flange mate which is the early t5type with the reverse ic as standard

Post 323406 by t5 pete on 2010-07-28 20:24:15

yeah i meant to say 940 ive just sent you a pm with the details

Post 323577 by Happygilmore78 on 2010-07-30 14:03:50

Haha - awesome nuttyness as usual, but welcome Volvrat II

Post 323629 by Crazy_C on 2010-07-30 21:57:19

Yea, saw the PM, cheers dude. HG, yea, there's a reason why I'm called Crazy!!

Post 323896 by 850t5 on 2010-08-02 02:35:24

How much did the exhaust cost? I like :)

Post 323902 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-02 09:56:07

Only cost £80, all custom fabricated by trial and error. Also included cutting the old exhaust off cos the bolts were so rusted they were just crumbling into roundness. It is awesome, can't wait to hear it when I have the 15G on there too at higher boost!! :D heheheheeeee

Post 324594 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-06 21:31:03

Been having a bit of fun today too. Fitted a pair of tights on the headlamps, actually wrapped around the glass itself on the main unit too, and not just stretched all over the back so fits much nicer :) Also the roof rack is on there, and the painted grill too :D Image Oh, first touch of hawaiian theme for the Retro Rides show with Rat-Look.com Image

Post 324658 by The Flying Moose on 2010-08-07 00:06:54

Looking sweet crazy! Cant wait to see it when its finished! Perhaps you should try the hammerited rear windows look.

Post 324661 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-07 00:25:51

Cheers mate :D Got some different plans for the rear 3 windows on this wagon :)

Post 325553 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-12 21:52:18

So after 8 1/2 hours of hard work, and I mean VERY hard work, I have a new turbo on the wagon :D Sounds soooo much better, much beefier now, no smoke, quieter too, and it really pulls well, even though I've set the boost lower cos I still need to sort out the intercooler pipework as it's all jiggled about now, and the air intake was on the top, and is now on the bottom of the snail. Helluva lot of work, but my god was it worth it! There is a circlip that holds the core into the housing, and it took my mate and I half an hour just to get it back on!!! 4" circlip made of 3mm metal  So here she is, in her shiny(ish) snailish glory!! :D I give you, the new 15G turbo off Volvrat I :D Image

Post 325557 by T5frankie on 2010-08-12 22:07:03

nice one mate

Post 325559 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-12 22:14:25

Cheers dude. Sounds sooo much sweeter and pulls beautifully. Need to get the intercooler hose sorted though cos it is well and truly squished something rotten at the moment, but that's a job for another day when I have 20 minutes spare in daylight.

Post 325618 by smithy on 2010-08-13 13:24:17

you will be losing alot of power with the pipe squished mate.that is why they clock the 15g so the inlet pipe is pointing upwards .

Post 325623 by Happygilmore78 on 2010-08-13 14:01:11

Nice work mate, always a good read :) although i prefer pictures as i am simple

Post 325670 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-13 16:59:33

Pipe has now been replaced n no longer squished so yay! Had some spare hoses at home n a nice 45 deg bend did the trick :) Cheers guys, will need to do a new video of the sound :D

Post 325671 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-13 17:01:38
you will be losing alot of power with the pipe squished mate.that is why they clock the 15g so the inlet pipe is pointing upwards .
I could have had the inlet pointing up but then the actuator would have been in wrong place.

Post 325696 by smithy on 2010-08-13 20:49:16

i know mate but they make a bracket to repo the actuator .but not to worry atleast its done weldone now hope to see you at santapod.

Post 325724 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-13 22:04:34

Hahaa, yea, but I didn't have said bracket, so I just made do with what I had and what I could make, and it works nicely :D Gotta work out how to do that ballast resistor mod you said about before now, and then run slightly higher boost, cos that sorts out the fuel / boost cut IIRC, yea? Can't really afford to go down the line of blue injectors and FPR so I'll just get my injectors cleaned I think.

Post 325725 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-13 22:07:09

You can see how I've done the intercooler pipework here: Image Much shorter now too :D

Post 325764 by smithy on 2010-08-14 12:03:37
Hahaa, yea, but I didn't have said bracket, so I just made do with what I had and what I could make, and it works nicely :D Gotta work out how to do that ballast resistor mod you said about before now, and then run slightly higher boost, cos that sorts out the fuel / boost cut IIRC, yea? Can't really afford to go down the line of blue injectors and FPR so I'll just get my injectors cleaned I think.
you will not need to do ballister resister pack mod unless you change injectors for high resistor injectors .but you will need to fit a fpr if you want to fuel the 15g to 15 psi because you will start to run lean mate.

Post 325881 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-14 23:24:56

That's cool. Cheers mate. It's running at 8psi at the moment and I'm impressed with this so far, but I will up it to about 12psi though but don't think I'll go as high as 15psi really. Though after changing the turbo I seem to have developed a bit of an oil leak so gotta work out where that's coming from first really. Doesn't seem to be coming from the turbo, but it may be the drain on the turbo isn't connected properly. It was getting late in the day and me n my mate were pretty damn tired so may have missed it slightly.

Post 326052 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-15 21:37:08

New door cards :D Well, not exactly new door cards, but rather modified ones :D Image Done the steering wheel too, and ripped out the airbag too (I hate airbags, and it adds to the rat look)

Post 326055 by smithy on 2010-08-15 21:43:19

your mad lol cannot wait to this car and turn the boost up to 15 psi chicken lol.hope to see you at the pod kicking my 940t into touch .

Post 326061 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-15 22:02:19

Hahaa, yes, I am mad, had you not realized that already? You should see what the other plans I have for her are ;) Lets just say they involve some suspension modification and tyre changes too ;) Dunno when I'll next be at pod, I work quite a bit so don't often get the free time :( Yea, once I sort out the oil leak then I'll up the boost I think lol

Post 326123 by Happygilmore78 on 2010-08-16 12:08:54

Jesus, 18.7 MPG!!!

Post 326230 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-16 22:35:55

Hahaa, yea, I live in the outskirts of London mate, I have traffic wherever I go :( Though I have the slight issue of the engine spontaneously catching fire to sort out first. Yes, you read that right, caught fire! Pulled into work today, bit of smoke coming out from under the hood, popped it open and the engine was slightly on fire!!! Thankfully I carry a fire extinguisher with me luckily!! Seems to be pissing oil out of somewhere under the turbo and it hit the exhaust and just caught light :(

Post 326332 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-17 19:26:50

Engine fire has been sorted, an oil line had split slightly and was spraying oil out when under pressure onto the turbo and onto the exhaust. So that's now been sorted (hopefully) And now a sticker update time!! Rear side windows, with the Scrappage Scheme Survivor and Rat-Look.com stickers, but now accompanied by the rat manifesto sticker I designed!!! Image This is the original design of the manifesto for you guys to read a bit easier (not got round to tinting the rear side windows yet so this is how it will look eventually) Image And the front badge has now been altered slightly too :D Image Image

Post 326334 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-17 19:40:58

Got this fitted today too :D Image Also added some spring assistors too to help raise the back end up a bit, need to add another set to each spring I think too, get some sweet rake on there and then I can stick larger tyres on for a bit of a hot rod stance :D

Post 327359 by Crazy_C on 2010-08-22 20:14:37

Well after much arguing with, well, everything, I managed to get the new speakers in :D Unfortunately after all the work, found that the bloody amp has packed up!! Ah well, guess I'll get a new JBL one, been needing to replace my Vibe amps with JBL ones anyways, so now I have a good reason to! I also started tinting my windows but the bloody neighbourhood chavs decided to f**k it up for me and I ended up slicing my arm right open as they jumped on the car as I was sitting in the back trimming it a bit. They're just lucky I didn't manage to get out the trunk in time before they rode off on their bikes  I've decided I can't be arsed to pay out for more tint film, so I'm just gonna paint the inside of the windows. 100% tint, and damn sight easier to do too  But here's the result of today's work: Image Image Yes, they are shelving brackets holding the speaker pods up. There's another bracket on the other side too :) Hey, it works eh?

Post 329356 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-03 19:41:21

Good news and bad news folks. Good news - the whole car is now matt black and looks awesome :D Bad news - the turbo seal has blown :( Need to replace the turbo but luckily I should hopefully be getting one on Sunday off Justin (who is a total life saver!!) But enjoy the photos :) Image Image

Post 330522 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-10 00:53:45

Well some sad news, the engine is dead :( Checked everything and everything seems fine, but there is oil getting into the combustion chamber for some unknown reason. Good news though - I've bought a Rover 3.5 litre V8 to drop into her!! Gonna be running on carbs and straight through pipes, so with a few little mods should see me to about 180 - 200hp :)

Post 330530 by Al115 on 2010-09-10 08:15:55

That's going to be even more amusing than before! Looking excellent.

Post 330572 by smithy on 2010-09-10 13:21:46

thats going to be wild put a 4 barrel on it and a cam and manifolds and your looking at more than 200 bhp more like 250+

Post 330648 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-10 18:03:35

Only thing on that list I'm not getting mod ones from that list is cams.

Post 330666 by smithy on 2010-09-10 18:27:09

sounds good mate and the advantage is they drop straight in.i would luv to put a c6.3 amg merc engine in mine oh yes lol.

Post 330700 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-10 19:06:02

Heh, that'd be sweet mate. Do you know if the gearbox fits to the v8? Can't find any info on it online. I can fab up an adapter plate easy enough if it'll fit.

Post 331023 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-12 16:58:21

Mmmmmmm, taaasstttyyyyy!!! Image I have done quite a bit of research and I have found that to get this in, and hooked up with everything, I need an earlier 940 gearbox, one with the ZF4HP22 code on it, attach a Rover bellhousing to the front, and then hook it all up :D Once I get the bits, it hopefully won't be too long at all. Just gotta get the bits now.

Post 331042 by smithy on 2010-09-12 19:30:37

keep it manual mate alot better power and fuel mpg too

Post 331082 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-12 21:43:44

It's auto already. Plus, kinda need to be able to use your left leg to drive a manual  Something not many of you may have realized, but I have spinal cord damage. Why I got into rat look cars, cos I physically can't clean them, so I just go with the rat look so it looks cool when it's dirty :D

Post 331091 by smithy on 2010-09-12 22:02:39

ok mate forgot yours is a auto go for it mate should be good and the rat look looks good too

Post 331099 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-12 22:06:24

Yea, I reckon it'll be interesting putting yours and mine up against each other sometime. Yours with higher hp, but turbo lag, and mine, with lower hp, but high torque all through the rev range.

Post 331101 by smithy on 2010-09-12 22:09:54

i think next year will be a surprise with what i am going to do over the winter with mine also i dont get turbo lag on my car mate.but it would be good to see though

Post 331103 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-12 22:11:33

Well maybe not turbo lag, but you'll have power kick in at higher revs. Got me intrigued with what you're gonna be doing now though :D

Post 331585 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-15 01:22:57

List of parts obtained so far: The engine (always a good start) Distributor (on the engine already) Alternator (waiting for delivery) Starter motor (waiting for delivery) Water pump (waiting for delivery) Spark plugs (waiting for delievery) HT leads Headers Full gasket kit (waiting for delivery) I need: Inlet manifold + carbs Gearbox off a 91 - 95 Volvo 940 (gearbox code ZF 4HP22) Landrover 4HP22 gearbox (for bellhousing and torque converter) And I'm looking at all of those bits that I need at the moment :)

Post 332353 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-19 21:21:22

I got bored today, so thought I'd play around with the car a bit. Took the door cards off the rear doors, taped up and tidied the wiring, and painted it all matt black. Image

Post 332641 by Happygilmore78 on 2010-09-21 11:49:46

My dad has a P5B Coupe with the Rover V8 in, sounds awesome - good thing about it is, Edelbrock do loads for it as its originally a US lump - mainly for looks, but they also do the carbs, intake etc. This is going to be a cracker buddy, good addition to the Rat lol

Post 332651 by Crazy_C on 2010-09-21 13:01:31

Well I will be getting an offenhauser inlet manifold with edelbrock carb on it a bit later on, so that'll look sweet, but I may just supercharge it :)

Haha, sounds like a plan! One nutter took a P5B and used the chassis off a rangerover to make it 4WD, there is a lot of interchangeable bits if it fits that is.

Had some trouble with the bell housing :( Went to fit it to the engine and found it didn't fit :( Then looking around spotted in small writing "300TDI" so it's from the diesel Landie, not the V8 like it was sold to me as, so that was a pain in the ass, but a couple of phone calls to the place and they're sending me the right one free of charge and unless they can arrange a courier to come n get the wrong one, I've now got a bell housing to put on the landie gearbox I have and sell it so hopefully get more money from it that way :) Been cleaning today. Getting all the paint and crap off the rocker covers and the starter motor, and given it a bit of a polish, but it's still a 34 year old engine so gonna keep a bit of the older look on it, think it'll look nicer like that. Mmmmm, tasty bit of head action ;) Image Head rebuild is now done :D Yeehaaawwwww!!

Post 337783 by mk3phill on 2010-10-12 13:50:57

some good work going on here dude! cant argue with the 3.5 v8, just got hold of a p5b and a rolling mgb gt so thats my next bit of magic. how much has it cost to rebuild the heads and get all the gaskets if you dont mind me asking?

Post 337791 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-12 16:28:01

Ooohh, niiice. I got the full gasket kit on eBay for like £25 or something, same for plugs n leads for next to nothing. The head work is included with the fitting which is a couple hundred :D

Post 337942 by mk3phill on 2010-10-13 08:26:08

ahhh thats cool! i like it when its all nice and cheap haha

Post 339490 by Dangerous Dave on 2010-10-20 22:46:13

So how's it going then? Any update on the project? Pics?

Post 339502 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-21 00:02:34

No pics at the moment unfortunately. Been having a few problems with my health as of late so not got as much work done as I'd have liked, but I have the gearbox completely built up ready for bolting to the engine. The piston crowns have all been cleaned and tidied up, along with the bores. The valve springs have been checked and are all at correct spring rate, just gotta get the inlet valve seals in which is hard as there's not really many guides on how to rebuild RV8's!! LOL But I'll get the old girl in next week for the swap over :D First thing though, gotta remove the engine n gearbox out a mk4 Escort van to clear some space for the Volvrat :D

Post 339517 by Dangerous Dave on 2010-10-21 07:43:45

Sorry to hear that buddy, hope you're feelin better soon. I would have thought there were loads of rebuild/tuning guides for the RV8 with the range of cars its used on?

Get well soon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vs100JqQGuw

Post 339523 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-21 08:56:00

Cheers guys, unfortunately it's a long term health problem. I've got spinal cord damage and every so often the back will just play up and I can say bye bye to use of the left leg :( Why I drive autos these days. Though for the last week, this has been what I've been rolling in. Yes, I've even ratted my wheelchair!! Will be getting lowered at some point too, with the addition of camber :D haha Image Oh, sweet link btw Phil, but it'll be more like this, just with a bug catcher on top instead of the filters like that ;) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBXiQh1VJJ0[/ame]

Post 339526 by Happygilmore78 on 2010-10-21 09:23:23

Sorry to hear that buddy, but at least you see the glass as half full, loving the chair :)

Post 341093 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-29 12:24:12

Cheers, yea, making the chair to match the car!! LOL Even looking to have a couple of speakers in it too maybe   I've been really busy today, managed to take the dash out the rat, and believe me, it's a real pain in the ass to do!!! Though I am still wondering how I was struggling to find screws to put some bits back on considering how much I stripped out?? Image Yes, the clocks are cable tied down  Hey, it works!!! But keep your eyes peeled for a custom dash being made in the future ;)

Post 341296 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-30 01:20:41

Well I've been busy tonight, this has all been made in the last hour :) A lot of cutting with a hand saw keeping the volume down but I'm very happy with how it's looking so far :D Image

Post 341539 by Crazy_C on 2010-10-31 11:43:00

Just bought some new gauges and dials for the car, seeing as how I'm gonna be running larger tyres on the rear and the V8 engine too, that means the speedo and tacho will be out, so I thought "stuff it" and I've bought this for a real sweet price! Image

Post 341838 by Crazy_C on 2010-11-01 17:32:52

The physical construction of the dash is now complete :D All that's left to do now for it is cut outs for the 4x 6.5" coaxial speakers that are going in there and the digital dashboard and then carpet it :D Image Image It's also going into the shop tomorrow for the V8 transplant to commence :D

Post 354800 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-12 18:33:37

Here's some updates for you guys. Realized I haven't updated this in quite a while. November 9th: Before I started work today I managed to get the old gearbox disconnected and out, and my mates got the new gearbox in so it's now looking like this :D Image And earlier it was all just a big gaping hole! Image Unfortunately found that the propshaft isn't quite long enough, so looks like some machining will have to be done to get that to fit! Couple weeks ago: Wow, it's been a while since I've updated this!!! Well a bit of an update for you guys. The prop was too short to meet the gearbox by 55mm, so that has been holding up progress for the last month, but that spacer is now made up. So now things can all start progressing again too :D As for the dashboard, it's now looking a bit different too. The dials are now in, and you can see now why I decided to strip the old dash out and make the new one out of MDF :D Image I've got the dials in and the headlamp switch in too. I just need to get the fuel gauge, hazard, and fog light switches in there too, and then I can carpet the dash. Although the dials are there, they're not actually connected to anything yet, but they light up and look pretty :D Image Today: Well now I've had some free time and the weather has been ok-ish (still been tipping it down though so getting soaked :( ) I've managed to get a fair bit done so now, the next step is getting the engine in now :D Woop!!! I've got the prop spacer in place, which was a pain in the ass to do underneath the car on oil and rain soaked ground with loads of leafs around the place!! A lot of effort lying on your back under a car doing 4 bolts up with spanners. It doesn't sound like it, but the blood was gone from my hands after each bolt!!! Plus sneezing whilst under there and head butting the undercarriage really doesn't help! But here it is, in place, all bolted up :D Image Also been working on the wiring too, so I now have switches for the front and rear fog lights. The rear fog switch lights up when the lights are on, but the front one doesn't for some reason, but it works. I'll just sort out the wiring for it to light up when it comes to MOT time. No photos of them sorry. Got my fuel gauge in too now, and here's a photo of it - it's the yellow thing  Image It's a multimeter set to show resistance, so it works as follows: 2 = full 68 = 1/5 tank remaining 113 = fuel warning light would come on (if I had one) 131 = empty tank

Superb :)

Post 354805 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-12 19:11:16

Cheers bud :D Sooooo can't wait to hear the V8 roar!! As it gets closer and closer, I can just imagine how it'll sound :D

Post 355836 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-19 23:10:55

Couple of updates. Got the dash carpeted now and really pleased with the outcome on it :) Image One problem did arise though, my lights and indicators no longer work :( So after studying wiring diagrams and various other bits, I'll try a couple of things tomorrow morning, otherwise, I'll just make my own wiring loom and switch bank for the lights. Shouldn't be too hard - ignition live to a switch for: - lights - main beam - front fogs - rear fogs And just wire an ignition live constantly to the sidelights. The hazards and indicators have stopped working too, so will have to see if I can get that working again off the OEM switches, just cos it's useful and more used to having them there.

Post 356888 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-26 22:52:18

I've fitted a triple pod into the car this morning, and found that the pod fits perfectly on the pillar. Bearing in mind, I have no pillar trim, I was really impressed by the fitment of it :D Total cost for the pod + gauges = £35 :D Image Next step is to do the lights wiring loom tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Post 357160 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-28 21:07:46

January 28th: I now have my switch panel in place for my lights. Though after doing this, I thought I'll remake the panel, and have it so that the switches are in a smiley face :) Image

Post 357507 by Crazy_C on 2011-01-31 14:52:44

A video of the light switches in action :D Image

After a lot of moving things about, hammering bits of metal, shoving and swearing, the engine is now 75% in :D Can't quite get the angle right for mating the gearbox and engine together, so going to either have to bash more of the cross member for the sump to drop down more or bash the bulk head to get the gearbox up more. It will fit, I just imagine with more swearing and shoving  Image

Post 358313 by Crazy_C on 2011-02-04 21:36:57

Cheers mate :D Looks like we're gonna try dropping the cross member and steering rack, get the engine in, and then raise it back up as high as it'll go and see how that works :) Might need a bit of tracking sorting afterwards though, but it'll work, hopefully

thats a great picture as it is! have to keep these photo's coming!

Post 358667 by Crazy_C on 2011-02-06 00:28:44

Cheers bud :D Hopefully the next one will be the V8 bolted in properly *crosses fingers*
Cheers bud :D Hopefully the next one will be the V8 bolted in properly *crosses fingers*
Guess what? Yep, it's bolted in properly!! No engine mounts as of yet, and still gotta channel a bit out the cross member to get a bit of clearance for the sump off that, and for the bellhousing off the trans-tunnel, but it's all good :D Image

Post 359539 by claymore on 2011-02-10 07:33:19

well done, but what do you mean by bolted in properly?

Post 359540 by BruceT on 2011-02-10 07:55:14

Look good, keep the progress reports coming - Very interesting reading - Congrats on the project so far.

Post 359544 by Crazy_C on 2011-02-10 09:03:13

I mean it's bolted in to tge gearbox with the torque converter attached. The first pic I posted with the V8 in the engine bay it was held by an engine crane but not any more :)

Post 361521 by FAZAT on 2011-02-18 15:44:22

Wow. I have never seen so much time and effort put into a rat rod. Keep up the good work, it looks great man:B_thumb:

Post 361523 by Crazy_C on 2011-02-18 16:20:20

Cheers mate :) I've had to cut a section out of the sump to make it fit over the subframe and having to modify the oil pick up too to allow it to fit in the newly shaped sump so hopefully that'll fit with some cutting and welding it at a different angle otherwise I'll have to extend it a bit too. We'll see though when it's been modified. Unfortunately had someone decide to break in and steal the stereo and amp out of it so now gotta get a new stereo and replace the stolen amp unless we can find it. Hopefully we can find it though, fingers crossed!

Post 362608 by Crazy_C on 2011-02-23 23:39:24

February 23rd: Well the sump has been chopped, and the oil pick up is now made of 4 sections welded together to change the angle and length of it so it now fits too :) Image I now have the clearance that I needed, so can now get my mate to see about making up the engine mounts, and then I can rebuild the engine :D Yay!!!

Post 367084 by Crazy_C on 2011-03-17 23:58:11

Well I've been busy today, and some of you may have already seen on facebook that the engine now looks like a proper engine :) I have fueling again, I have the heads on and the exhaust manifolds on too so yay :D Image What strange thing do y'all see?? ;)

Post 367086 by Dangerous Dave on 2011-03-18 00:00:50

Exhaust manifolds are swapped around so the collectors point forward. Are you doing somekind of side exit mod? Like in this vid? Or do they not fit the other way? Or are you going to twin turbo it? [yt]GFV6X_X7NFE[/yt]

Post 367090 by Crazy_C on 2011-03-18 01:28:46

They don't fit the right way round, so just gonna have them come out the front bumper :D Oh, and I want that 740!!! :D

Post 368413 by mk3phill on 2011-03-25 00:35:14

looking good dude! wont be long now by the looks of it

Post 368472 by Crazy_C on 2011-03-25 12:32:36

Cheers mate, yea, not long at all now :) can't wait to fire her up and take her for a spin :D

Thanks to a guy I know I have a new, free peep mirror off a Volvo Amazon :D Image And a view from inside :) Image
