hi , i cant quite believe what im about to say !
i have recently sold my 1993 ford sierra rs cosworth 4x4 that i owned for 8 years and loved to bits (she was running just over 300 bhp at 17 psi) i thought i would own this car for ever but it was just no longer practical , my 15 year old son is in a band and although we do have a transit van in the housesehold i really need an estate to get all his gear in as he has started to gig more and more and the van is usually full of tools or crap!!!!!!!
a mate of mine you may know who uses this site (colnotts) has had a few volvos mainly 850 t5 r`s and although we always had lots of banter about who had the better car i must admit that the volvo has always been my second choice of car and possilbly the only choice for a decent sized estate car ( cant stand scoobies especially the estate version). so if your up for converting a die hard cossie fan and petrol head. please feel free.
i have decided that a volvo estate is definatley the way for me to go and will be on the look out for a nice one in the new year (not in any mega rush as i will just use the van or the misses car) but what would you suggest 850, v70, v40 ? obviously a blower is a must but t4 or t5 ? which is better i know that the t5r is the ultimate but what are my other options, what are these cars like for tweaking? auto or manual i dont mind either but what are your suggestions , like i haave said i am a die hard cossie fan and what i dont know about them is`nt worth knowing but volvos are a mystery to me so any advise would be appreicated , cheers .

Hello mate a t5-r is not the ultimate (smaller turbo) what you want is a manual front wheel drive v70R (awd versions are problematic, and autos are restrictive if you decide to modify) it has the bigger turbo and is the culmination of all the earlier versions, with a few mods they can kill a stage 1 cossie, I myself love my cossies i used to own a 1988 flint grey M.A. developments sapphire with 424bhp polished escort rims leda race suspension, mongoose turbo back exhaust etc etc, i would love another in the future, oh and welcome to the forum mate

Welcome to the forum!
Well this is could start a huge debate... I guess its all on preferance. I myself would avoid the V70R in favour of an 850R or 850 T-5R as I believe its a little more interesting and has the added benefit of a little touring car history.
Arguably there are pro's and cons to both but the main difference is the electronics with the 850 having far fewer.
Most members are aiming for the 300bhp mark with their motors but as any petrol head will appreciate torque has a big role too and these have torquey engines.
Cant tell you must about the T4's in the V40 but they are certainly good value and quick.
Main difference between V70R and 850R/T5R is price. A decent V70R will set you back 2.5-4k but a decent 850 can be picked up for as little as a grand.

Ide go for the good old t5r or 850 r there a much more aggressive car in the way they drive also your can bolt any of the volvo turbos on and there not that expensive new and even cheeper second hand there relitive easy to tune but just remember the fwd the 850r have a type of lsd which is better for traction but that only came in the manual versions.
Also the auto boxes are fine in standard form and with a simple remap but push any more power through them and there likley not to last long .

Ive had 6 t5's, 2 855' 2 s70's v70 t5 and my current v70r so i can compare whats best cos i've had them all, and my current car is massively more aggressive than any of the others, maybe cos of my mods? it all depends on wether he likes 1980's interiors with mahooosive big buttons lol

When i was looking for an s60t5 and than found my s70r, i much prefered the more aggressive looks of the s70, but if you can get past the interior of the 850s (and lets face it, the s/v70s are pretty ancient anyway. lol), i think that the 850r/t5r's are even more aggressive to look at, they look great with titans or volans.
BTW if you want a quick 855 than you should ask rnash if he's still selling his (seems to change his mind a lot, bit like me lol). He's got a 13.8@1/4mile, which is pretty good, considering they are fwd.
Welcome to the club btw!

personally id go for the 850.........drives better, less problems, less electronics.
and looks better...
after the 850 the volvos went soft.started adding electronics which made it more complicated and less to tinker with if you wana tinker
most of the volvos i work on that have problems are later stuff..v70s c70s etc...all the electronics and diagnostics etc...and it always seems to be expensive to put right... not like the old reliable tried and tested 850....
obviously 850s have some probs but they arnt that many or that bad. :)
oh and welcome.

They certinaly dont have many... I think the engine is the weakest element and they are good for 250k plus if serviced regularly.

Hi and welcome :)
I've had a few T4s (and T5s) and if the V40 is big enough for you, I'd look seriously at that option. Engine doesn't sound as nice, but they're not much slower in a straight line than the 5-pots, much better on fuel, and handle and stop much better as stock.
T5s still win for the noise though :D

I'd say that when standard the t4's are quicker than the t5s, in fact even now that my s70r has been mapped, my old t4 (with a similar level of tune), was still quicker than my my s70r. the 5-pots definatly sound better though.
Can't comment on the 850r/t5r though as they have similar power to my s70r but weigh about 80-100kg less.

Mine was a T5 not an R Pedro, but tweaked as you know.
I prefer the T5R, Just so much more fun, it's a classic 850!
Despite the interior being a bit "clunky" and the problems I've had with it, I wouldn't buy a V70 again. I like the retro, falling to bits shed I've got :D
BTW welcome to the forum (no not you PF ;))

Heres a little 1/4 mile comparison between the V70 and the 850 I've owned...
V70T5 CD auto: 16T/whites/HLM 304/BSR cone/JT 3" catback/RIP:
14.63@ 96mph....killed the transmission though lol
855T5R manual: 18T/oranges/HLM custom map/panel filter/JT 3" catback/RIP:
14.78@ 94mph...with a boost problem amongst other faults lol
As it stands now, my heavier, auto V70, was a slightly quicker, more comfortable barge...but, having had rides in V70Rs and 850Rs/T5Rs I still prefer the latter.
They're all good cars. It's purely down to my personal preference.
Post 343583 by Al115 on 2010-11-10 06:55:48
I've owned and driven 850 T5s and Phase 1 and Phase 2 V70 T5s. For me the Phase 1 cars were the best compromise for a daily drive. I find the Phase 2s too "insulated" and the 850s drive more transparently but the interiors are now very dated - the Phase 1s were a good balance.
On a track, of course, I'd take the older cars every day :)
Post 343588 by Unknown on 2010-11-10 08:03:32
im new to volvo's myself but in my eyes ALL old cars are the best :D and the less electric's on a car the better i think as less to go wrong. unless of course u wanna be chasin 100 fairylights on ya dash or paying MR main stealer a zillion bucks each time you want to put ur newer car on a fault diagnostics check (due to electrical faults or issues) i think without doubt id rather have an older volvo than a new one as at least u can work on the older cars and old 850's ;)
YELLOW t5r esstate for sale on flebay tho sadly its an AUTO lol (links below)

The v70r came with the added freebie's of full koni setup and a 3" outlet on turbo 3" d/p + race-cat and 2.5" from there so all it really needs is a map and mbc to make it pretty good about £200 which i aint got at the mo lol, so my point being i think i can make a fair comparision as my 850 has a 18t and m59 box exhaust etc so all that's really different between the two is the shell/cabin. Lol you really are in love with your car which is fair enough but as most people are saying they just preffer the 850 best thing to do is start a poll and that will answer all the questions.
I for one have drove all the p1 v70's and yes there alot more comfy and smoother but for some reason they just dont feel like a rough and ready car like the 850 is if you get what i mean.

the suspension on normal 850's will be softer than the R V70, plus being older how tired was the bushes etc on the 850's compared to the polybushes on yours
come on, admit the R was just a carry-on/copy of the original T-5R lol

Hi to the woodster, I have a 91 "J" plate cossie as well as my T5 .The Cossie is stored mainly and is sitting making money , the prices are going up every month. Still think the cossie is slightly quicker ,but my T5 is a an auto. 70-90 in 5th is very quick for a standard Sapphire.
