New to this site, just treated myself to an 850r. Had a look underneath it for first time and found a rear main seal oil leak that BP would be proud of. Funny thing is there is no excess crankcase pressure at idle (thats checking it warm and lifting the dipstick) there is no pressure/smoke at all. If i pull the vac hose off the PTC valve then i do get smoke/light pressure at the dipstick which to me says that the pcv is ok to a point. There is no evidance of PCV replacement (no marks on the manifold nuts to indicate removal) I have bought a new PCV and bits to do anyway, but im wondering if it may be at higher engine speeds that it maybe pressurising when there is more 'blow by' and the vacum pipe onto the ptc loses its suction. So maybe the PTC route into the intake is blocked? or the rear main seal has just failed due to wear and tear. If anybody could help that would be great, Thanks Adam

Adam I had a great fear of the rear main seal gone on my 850. It was actually just the turbo return pipe seal on the engine block which is a very common problem and causes floods of oil to poor out the rear of the engine block. If you havnt already checked its worth looking at.... do a quick search on here for turbo return pipe or similar. Gasket and seal only £3 from parts for volvos online... worth a try before looking at the expensive things.

Thanks, but unfortunately its defo the rear main. I dont mind that much because im in the trade and will do it myself, but would like to know that i have cured any possible crankcase pressure problems first. Thanks again, impressed with this site!
