Just wanted to post about the benefits of getting your ATF changed.
Thanks to Mike @ FRF Swansea for sorting the Dexron III fluid and the seals etc as he was put under some pressure to get the stuff to me before the weekend.
I also want to thank top bloke pookie for doing the job for me. He was also kind enough to look my car over and pronounced that its in rude health. He makes a cracking cup of coffee and owns a rather lovely Red sensibly tuned 855R too. He has got to be the most chilled out bloke I know. His next 'little' job is just to rebuild & tune a 280bhp Cosworth engine in a Mk1 Escort rally car.
So whats the car like, is there any improvement I hear you say. I was a bit of a non believer but to keep the car in top form I thought it best to get it done and Im amazed at the difference. I thought it was fine before but the gearchanges are even smoother now. Kickdown is effortless and switching between D & R etc is even better.
So thanks for reading & dont wait to get it done.

Im suprised, as that car has been pampered (from what ive read over the years) i would of thought the transmission oil would of been perfect. Anyway, when YOU come to sell it, let me know ;)

Yeah the car has definitely been pampered and will continue to be in my care.This was purely peace of mind for me but I was pleasently surprised by the results.Such a superb car though and so enjoying tweaking it.If or when I sell I will let you know but all being well it wont be for a while.

Its next on my to do list :) How did he do it? I've been in two minds whether to go for the removing the cooler? pipes under the battery box? if thats right? but I'm very very unsure of what I'd be doing or to go down the slow route of draining what I can from the plug under the bottom of the gearbox, topping up, running it and repeating till the fluid is clean.

Pookie put the car up on the ramps and unbolted the plug and drained off the bulk of the old ATF which gives you chance to have a quick brew.He replaced the plug then took the pipe out of the oil cooler which I noticed is located just at the front of the engine bay on the left.He then shoved a bit of rubber hose on the end of the pipe.A funnel was placed into the ATF dipstick pipe and fresh fluid poured in.The car was started and allowed to idle whilst pookie continued to pour in fresh fluid.As soon as the fluid turned the colour of the fresh fluid the engine was shutoff.A new O ring and clip was attached and everything reassembled.We then restarted the car and I put the car slowly through the gears then pookie rechecked the level and all was done.Would I do it myself well no but only because putting the car up on the ramp makes things so much easier than trying to crawl underneath the car myself.Hope that helps.

Very true buddy although I hope not to have to sell it for a while.Having said this one of the previous owners also left a note in the cars history asking for first refusal.None of this matters of course as swmbo is currently threatening to do a john bobbit on me if I even think about selling :-)

Might have to be a job for the weekend :) Don't know what fluid is in mine either, but would any dex 3 do?

Evening buddy
I will either find a pic or take a pic for you.I think your car is a 1997 same as mine with the 4 speed box and the Sport Econ Winter buttons.You will need a Dexron III ATF I bought the following:
3 x 4lt Volvo V01161621 Dexron III ATF fluid
1 x Volvo V06842411 retainer
1 x Volvo V06842414 sealing ring
1 x Volvo V06842413 O ring
You may not need the last three items but if you damage or lose the originals and for what they cost you may as well get them.
I bought all this from FRF Swansea and paid 102.00 all in incl vat and delivery

Cheers bud, a pic would be great. The only thing I'm unsure of is which pipe to disconnect. Once I know that I'm away! Seems a pretty good price from simon aswell.
