Hose kit

Evening all Had a spot of bother this morning.Car started normally but was idling very roughly then shortly after the dear old engine management light popped up.So I got the fault codes read and it came back as 414 which as you all probably know is "turbo boost pressure too high".They advised that they had found a perished hose which I assume feeds the turbo somehow and a valve was stuck open ?? Perhaps this was caused by a spirited drive home yesterday  Anyway fault has been cleared and the car is running fine again.Perhaps a good idea would be to replace all the essential hoses.Has anybody got any recommendations or sources of supply ? Thanks all

I personally would identify exactly what caused the problem. Its quite rare the hoses just split expecially one that would cause a servere vacuum leak, perhaps there was undue pressure on the hose. Most hose kits are around £70-£100 for a complete kit. Ebay is always a good start for samco and such alike.

I started thinking about replacing the hoses on mine yesterday, not really looked into it yet, but have come across these http://www.partsforvolvosonline.com/product_info.php?cPath=28_522&products_id=3112 Seems a bit expensive though and don't know if its worth it, would be good to hear of peoples experiences. Btw, sounds similar to what happend to mine, by valve, could they have meant the turbo actuator?

sounds like it was one of the small diameter vac hoses to/from the BCS (boost control solenoid). I'd replace them using internally braided fuel hose

Most of my hoses were varieties of diameter of garden hose off the B&Q shelf.

If you buy 5mm it will fit all the connections nice and snug.

Thanks guys I just assumed it was down to age same thing happened to my last T5.I think your right about the turbo actuator Liam.

Just read up re the turbo actuator and the technician certainly didnt mention having to remove the turbo to get at the actuator if that is what the problem was. Im pretty certain he called it a "valve". No problems this morning all sweet as a nut again but I will put this on my admittedly small joblist to be done asap.

Is this an S70R thing???? Mine very occasionally (although not for months now) throws a turbo actuator fault code. I just clear it and its never run any different even with the fault code. I've replaced my vac lines apart from the one to turbo (not nice weather to be under the car).

You have a nice S70R by the way.

As for running rough try replacing the vac hoses andcheack all the intercooler hoses to see if there is any leakage. If he mentions a (valve) it will most certainly be the recirc valve there is a 4mm vac line running from it on the turbo to the inlet manifold.

It could well be me getting mixed up.

Is the recirc valve also referred to as a dump valve ?

Post 354570 by t5 pete on 2011-01-11 20:41:03

Its a very easy job to do the only one that is a little difficuly is the vac hose that leads to the compressor housing

Post 354574 by mightywolf on 2011-01-11 20:53:13
Cool how many hoses were there and how difficult a job was it ? You have a nice S70R by the way.
You are best taking the heat shield off cos I don't think you'll route the line from the turbo to the bcs with it on. 1) line from turbo to bcs 2) from actuator to bcs 3) from bcs to air pipe just behind the maf. 4) from re-circ valve to inlet manifold. Thats what I've/will do although I dont have a re-circ anymore because of the dump valve. A re-circ valve works basically the same as a dump valve I think, but a dump valve makes a noise :) Someone will correct me if I'm wrong or I've missed any vac lines.

Post 354576 by t5 pete on 2011-01-11 20:56:12

no need to take the head sheild off theres 4 x 4mm ID vac hoses get 2 mtrs worth and you will have enough but buy reinforced vac hoses so they dont implode or expand

Post 354643 by macp on 2011-01-11 23:10:16

Well this is interesting guys. I told my story to Simon @ FRF Swansea who is saying the ECU engine code 414 is the boost control solenoid.I have also been out and had a look at the BCS and the hoses which to me dont seem that bad.The tech said the hose was crumbling but unless its some other pipe none of them appear to be in this condition ?

I am not a confident mechanic I so want to be and somehow feel I am lacking something by not working on my car myself. My dad was a mechanic but never passed his skills to me to be honest we have sadly not spoken for many years. So having slept on it I decided to get it done & dusted and book the car in with Hallmark Volvo who carried out the diagnosis.Although they were perfectly polite I think I have just pissed them off which was completely unintentional.Sorry Mike/Andrew if you ever read this thread. Apologies to pookie also if he reads this as I seem to have got it all wrong and may have pissed off a lot of people :worried:

its a shame your in cheshire. But your always welcome to bob along to mine if you need owt doing your unsure of (providing I can do it!) For something like vac lines it would still be cheaper to come up North a bit than getting it done at the dealers. The offer is there if you ever need it anyway bud.

Thanks for your offer MW it really is very kind of you and I really genuinely appreciate it.Pookie has also kindly offered to help me out but understandably he has other engagements and wont be available for a while.I am truly grateful for any offers of assistance if Im honest. The car seems to be running fine but being a worrier and the wife now telling me she will need my car soon to take her and my daughter to a concert and it being a long run I don’t want to risk a breakdown. What did you use to make up the vac lines MW.Im also wondering if I need to change the BCS as Ive read they rarely become faulty yet Simon (Rufe) believes the 414 fault code is the BCS ?

Macp, if you weren't 200 miles away I would come and do the job for you, you need no more than £15 worth of vac line or preferably fuel line off the shelf from any good high street motor shop. Its an easy job although I appreciate nothing is easy unless you know how. I have a spare BCS you can have and I can have it posted to you on Friday if it saves you some money.

This looks about right guys what do you think ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250467076317&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Post 354884 by The Flying Moose on 2011-01-12 23:42:40

That would work but for strength and longevity I would buy fuel hose like this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3M-x-5mm-I-D-BRAIDED-PETROL-DIESEL-FUEL-LINE-HOSE-PIPE-/250508855249?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3a537dc7d1

Post 354958 by mightywolf on 2011-01-13 19:58:28

I just used some 5mm rubber vac hose I had kicking about in my cellar! :) I will be upgrading it to some fuel hose soon though. Don't want to be worrying about it perishing too fast. I've always got loads of Volvo bits kicking about aswell if you ever need owt (got beat too it this time!) And like I said if you ever need a hand or any bits just gimme a shout. Mark.

Post 355115 by macp on 2011-01-14 19:28:26

Thanks Mark your a gent and I genuinely appreciate the offer.I may yet end up taking you up on it. At this stage I think I want to have a go myself.Thats assuming I have the tools required.I have a half decent socket set and a few spanners etc. Will this do ?

Post 355122 by mightywolf on 2011-01-14 19:56:23

Yep it'll do. Depends what clips are on the vac lines at the moment. You should only need summat to snip the new hose and a screwdriver really. I picked up some small size 8 hose clips from my local motor spares shop. Only a few pence each and far better than jubilee clips. They clamp the pipe without nipping the rubber or cutting into it (which can happen if you over tighten a jubilee clip). The best way to learn is to have a go! Take em off one at a time and replace each one as you go. Easy :)
