OK, a couple of questions I have about the S40 T4 I got. t'other day
There is a slight knocking noise coming from the front which sounds like somethings loose or wobbly, I have just had wheels aligned and chap said tracking was way out and suggested suspension as he heard it too when he went out in it.
Other is a noise I can only describe as a faint 'woo, woo ing' when accelerating and under braking, seems to come in over 2000rpm but when engine is idle there is nothing, it also kangaroos a bit in 3rd when under load but only briefly, LiamT4 has suggested sparks so gonna replace them regardless. It just doesnt seem to have the power my mates T4 has when putting the foot down. Obviously I relaise that for an 11 year old car its going to need some work and I aint expecting miracles lol just be nice to have an idea what could be the problem.
At first I thought it was wheels trying to grip and/or the tyres themselves as I have read some makes are a bit noisy, fronts have Maxxis on and back some bloody model called Event, made in china lol (I can see those are going to be changed ASAP).
Lastly, every now and again I get a faint fishy smell coming into the cabin. Am I assuming correctly this is the coolant that might need replacing and pipes cleaning (just from what I read on the web)
Hope someone can help, cheers chaps(esses)
Oh just remembered, bit of smoke coming out the dipstick pipe when she is warmed up, not a load though and when she was up on the ramps and idle there was a bit out the exhaust, again not a load.

does it have aircon ? that may well be the fishy smell, might need the system cleaning out or running for a prolonged peroid to get the gasses flowing

if its like the V70, prob is suspension top mount....i have had 3 of these on 3 different cars....on the V70 you can just get the rubber which is about £30...but sounds the same mate...

As i said get the codes checked, as it could be a few things (e.g maf, lambda, plugs, etc).
My mate had a problem sometimes with the car stuttering/jerking under full load, turned out it was the 1st lambda sensor.
What colour is the smoke? Does it do it from cold or when its warm, idling for a while?
Get someone to drive behind you when you give it some and see if its smokes when coming on or coming off boost.
About the air con, when the car is running, lift the bonnet and turn the a/c on. You should be able to hear the a/c "clicking" on and off. If you can hear it then the motor is working.
Shame you live far way, i don't do much hands on stuff (lol) but i'm pretty good at diagnosing problems.

Yeh I was re-reading ya message and you mentioned sensor rather than the plugs as I said up top of the post, sorry. The smoke is white but not thick, more like whispy rather than a mass of it, doesnt do it on startup, only when temp is up and after a drive. I will give the air con a go too and see if I can hear it, I actually tried switching the fan on and thats not working either, got her booked in at 4:00 for a check over. Still well chuffed with her, been out about four times today for a drive round town lol. No reason. Yeh shame that, am good at neither at the moment but we all start off somewhere.
Well, took her down to the garage and got mechanic to have a drive round, he put her on the ramps and noticed turbo seal is leaking. He mentioned that at about 10mph in second it kangaroos too. He thought it could have been over boosting but not sure if thats right. Still not got codes read to see if anything else pops up. Only seems to do it low revs, when it hits 4000 its ok. When does the turbo actually kick in?
Oh it was a little dry in the engine, 3 litres later and all is well and dipstick actually showing an oil mark so I will be having words with the old man as he said it was ok when he checked it, no other leaks though so so far so good-ish.

Ok bit of update, went for a nice long drive today and the noise was still there, put car into neutral when going down a hill and still there and still the same speed so not sure if its engine now. To be honest I aint got a danny la rue at all, just summising.
Apart from that I ended up trundling behind a sunday afternoon driver on the ring road for a mile or so so decided to get passed them. Ended up with a big grin on my face (despite her kangarooing at first) so despite the niggles I am still enjoying her.
Explained to the old man about the oil level when he checked it, his reply 'Well, its your car son' lol

The turbo starts to come in around 1800rpm and should really start to pull about 2500rpm.
Do you know a garage where you could get the emissions checked, see how its fuelling? May give a clue to what the problem is.

Yeh i'm asking around to see if anyone recommends a garage. I think its going on hold till end of the month, what with moving house and buying a car etc I am skint lol. But happily skint. Oh, air con didnt click on when checking under the bonnet, going to check fuses next but didnt have time other day. I had to laugh though as my dad was listening for the click 'Yeh its doing it all the time'. 'Yeh, Dad, thats telling me my seat belt isnt on' lol

I had a kangeroo issue with my first T4 the one and only time I used Supermarket petrol in it, it kangeroo'd when I can off the power, put in Shell V power at next fill up and no problems, I always use super unleaded (normally Vpower but BP ultimate) on the T4's

Yeh I think the last owner might have just used normal, she has had £40 quid of vpower so far but still doing it although now not all the time. She is getting a good run out on saturday so will see what she is like then.
Mine is when on power under load.
I am now starting to think the fluttering noise is the wheels and tyres now, they are bloody noisy.

Theres a chance that because its been run on 95 for a long time, that the ecu may take a few miles to adapt to 99.

Ahh. I didn't know it would do that

the knocking sound is probably a worn CV shaft or is dry...the t4 is good at wearing them out, especially the Nearside, otherwise could be a top mount bush or an engine mount (engine mounts go on the off side regularly), or a 'wooing' could be a wheel bearing...?
'kangarooing' could be down to dying HT coils - they're not that expensive and take 10mins to replace - it could be a fuel pump issue though (especially if its got crap in the filter).... try filling the fuel tank up and see if it goes away, the extra nudge from gravity may prove this point.
the motor on the aircon may click on and off very quickly or sometimes not at all if it hasn't been used for ages if there's a lack of oil in the AC system.... believe it or not, kwik fit can do wonders with air-con, for around 40quid.
