Hello people!
I've been a proud S60R owner since April. Love the car to bits but must try and slow down before plod catches me! (or tries to!)
It's an 03 plate and the first owner decided to put vitually every extra going onto it, Sat nav, tv, phone, rear parking sensor, privacy glass, elec passenger seat, 18" wheels and a strange but clever thing in the boot hook your bags on so they don't empty themselves around the boot taking those high speed turns!
Mileage was up a bit at 43,000 but i think I still got a bargain at 19,000.
11,000 miles on though and the new Pirelli's that were on when I bought it are shot - Not very impressed with them at all but other than that the car is amazing. Many a smug smile while passing all those Beamers!

Hi mate :welcome:
Theres a couple of S60R's on here now, you lucky people, sounds like you got a good well spec'd 1 at a good price :haha:
What colour is it and is it manual or auto?
Where are you based?
Post 35094 by mark31 on 2005-07-31 15:06:17
It's a manual, in black.
I live in Nottingham but work in Liecester so up and down the M1 every day

it's great there is another owner, we can talk s60r tactics!, lol
if you have any problems with the car, let me know it may have happened to me, or vice versa.
have you felt the backend wiggle affect yet?
wot mpg you getting?
cheers

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
Ok I'll try and answer everything that's been asked:-
I live in Bramcote just off J25 M1 and work just off J21M1 so that's my daily journey.
Best mpg off a tank is 28, worst I've had is 21, it's so hard to resist putting the pedal to the floor! Generally I'm getting about 24mpg off mixed driving.
Had the back end wiggle once but just eased off and it snapped back into line. That was in the dry taking a roundabout too fast, I've found in the wet in't the front that slides out quite easily but I think my tyres are contributing to that.
Dave - What tyres are you running on? Been offered some Kumho KU31's, their new high performance ones but a couple of retailers are saying they won't last but can they really be worse than the 11,000 off the Pirelli's?!

:welcome: You surely will be most welcome at the Photo shoot "Black Out" where we are trying to get together as much Black Volvo muscle as possible.
S60R is a Sweet motor - can't wait to see her in the flesh.

i mean a different type of wiggle, if driving straight, go over a bump, the back end of the car will do a weird wiggle feeling, just the shocks wiggleing, not the car slipping on road surface, have you felt that yet?

still got the pzero's on the back, the garage i got the car from put on a new set of pzero's, so 10,000 on, iam also very close to needing , 4 new tyres
i thinking any tyre you put on, its going ware away quickly!, lol
i was thinking goodyear f1's or michy pilot sport 2, the michy's are a little pricey, so not sure yet?
Have you tried the ecu reset yet?, makes feel alot faster for a while.

No haven't felt that I'll have to watch out for it.
What's the ECU reset, how does that work?
I've started looking around at some sort of power/performance upgrade but the tyres are going to put a dent in my wallet so haven't got a huge amount to spend. Took it on the track at Elvington a couple of weeks ago which was interesting - got 14.97s on the 1/4 mile but really struggled with traction, I tried the trac control fully on, off and everything in between but times didn't seem to vary that much. It would be interesting to know the optimum gear change points. Took it on the 1 1/4 mile flat out run which was a laugh, went through the speed trap at 145.8 mph with plenty in reserve, speedo was showing just over 150mph but didn't have my road angel plugged in to check true speed in car
Not sure what to do on the tyres now, the Kumho's are £107 each, they're extra load and have a treadwear index of 320 which is better than the 220 on the Pirellis. I've had Michys on a different car and lasted ages but I'm getting quotes of £200 per tyre!!

it mainly happens in comfort mode, if your rear tyres are at 30/32 psi, less chance of feeling it, but if you pump them up a little harder 35psi+, there is a higher chance of feeling problem, but if you cant feel it, dont worry.
What's the ECU reset, how does that work?
it puts ecu back to default values, which where they are at there max, then over time hot weather, poor tank of fuel affects the performance of the car/ecu
very simple to do
take out fuse's 6 and 23, in the engine bay, fuse box just above airfilter box.
on lid of fuse box, all the fuse numbers are there, and roughly wot they do, you ecm next to 6 and 23.
so pull them out for 10mins+, with car off.
replace them, start the car up, and feel the difference!

i get michy for £150 from local wee tyre place, have you tryed wee tyre type place?

cool, i think one of the members (ross) here, mentioned there were some s60r's at that event.
its a bit funny you were struggling for traction , 4wd car!, are you sure the 4wd is working?, you do get a tiny about of spin from the front wheels when takeing off hard, but only for a 1/4 of a wheel turn, then power transfered to the back wheels.
the traction/dstc, should be switched off completely, ie press dstc button 5 times in a certain timed way, if you dont, run the risk of burning up clutch on the 1/4mile
i would go canny with the 5000rpm clutch dump moves,if you do that? lol, cos its a 13 hour job to change the clutch in the s60r!.
you can turn the car into a fwd only, by pulling fuse 17 in the boot, fuse box on passenger side of boot, for some fun!
1/4 mile time wise, the car should been doing a 14secs@100mph approx, but you need to be hard on it get those stats, ie 5000rpm clutch dump!
wots the time for the 0-145 run you did?
i would have thought anything over 6000rpm, is going to be a waste of time for the optimum gear change points.

Thaks Dave. Well I've just taken the two fuses out so I'll see how it goes. Is this a semi permanent thing or does it deteriorate rairly quickly after it's done?
You've go me thinking now whether the 4wd system is working properly. I get quite a lot of wheelspin (front) if I pull away fast even in the dry, and in the wet flooring the throttle at 60 mph in third will spin them like crazy. Just a thought if fuse 17 is blown I'm assuming that it will be running front wheel drive only like you said, would I get a warning message on the dash?
At Elvington they weren't timing the max speed runs, just the 1/4 mile. Did 14 of these runs and all of my times went from 14.97 (87mph) to about 15.3 apart from one when I changed up from 2nd to 5th instead of 3rd!! Trundled across the line in about 16.5 secs!!
Post 35471 by Wobbly Dave on 2005-08-02 09:11:28
Despite Volvo's claims the S60R never made the quoted 300BHP until much later. In terms of tuning I suggest that you go to Volvotuning in Bromsgrove and get a RICA remap. They can increase the output to 360BHP and check yer car over at the same time.

yeah over a month or so it will settle down, but it could be you get used to the extra power.
if your front wheels are spinning like crazy, your 4wd is not working!, mine never spins it's front wheels, only if you do a 4000rpm clutch dump, you get a 1/4 turn wheel spin for a sec, get yourself to volvo asap.
could be just a fuse, but i doubt it.

Iam sorry dave, i dont like crossing swords, but that is not true, ive spoken to someone thats knows the truth about this!,
the intercooler solution is not that good on the s60r and inlet temperature will rise very quickly and therefore the power will soon be limited, so on rolling roads, there is not enough air flow compared to driving car on the road., which yeilds poor results from rr's
just remember tuning companies are very eager to provide peeps with data from stock cars showing poor result and then offer upgrades.
if your doing just a ecu remap, the best you were get in 30/35bhp more.

Thanks, I'll get it booked in at the dealer and ask them to have a look. Just tried taking fuse 17 out and I get the warning message 'Anti-skid system needs service' so fuse must be ok.
Regarding ECU (RICA) upgrade I've been quoted just over 500 quid from Volvo tuning. They quoted me 0-60 in 5.5 secs and top speed of over 170 mph. I know 0-60 isn't that important but isn't this time virtually identical to a standard S60R, so is it really worth it? Anyone out there had in done on this engine?

if you get a remap, you going to gain about 30/35bhp, which is a good return for 500 quid.
yes the standard s60r can do 0-60 in 5.5 secs, which there is plenty of proof out for that time.
if you remap it, its going to maybe be 1/2 a sec quicker to 60, its going to be in gear acceration where the best benfit is going to be, 60-100 etc, overtaking.
but i sometimes wonder weather is worth it, 30bhp, is a 10% improvment, which isnt that great, would be good on 150bhp car, but on 300bhp car not so good.
i have sent you a pm

dave[/QUOTE]Who might that be?
RICA I have been told were approached by Volvo Sweden following the discovery that the S60R orignally was only making about 280BHP and not the quoted 300. The negotiations broke down and RICA walked away.
It is quite evident that increases are far more than 35bhp for a remap. Even the BSR/TME claim more than that.
I have supporting evidence that the increases are there to be had. I dont know how you can refute them? I would be interested to know.

this is a quote from adam talking about bsr, in a thread on the mods bit of forum
"Right, and they also claim 354 bhp out of it modified, which according to other tuners such as TME, is not possible."
this is concerning s60r, the best your get from a ecu remap is 330/335bhp, like i said and other people are saying.
so not sure where your getting your facts from dave?
RICA I have been told were approached by Volvo Sweden following the discovery that the S60R orignally was only making about 280BHP and not the quoted 300. The negotiations broke down and RICA walked away.
so wot does this mean?, nothing really
I have supporting evidence that the increases are there to be had. I dont know how you can refute them? I would be interested to know.
this is part of the problem, rolling roads!, if you read up on rolling roads, you will open a huge can of worms, every rolling road ive been to give different results, ive been to loads of rolling road shootouts.
so which one is has given the true, torque/bhp?, so if we dont know the answer to this, then "the facts" are not that cut and dry.
the tranmissions loss's is another can of worms, but can be used well to change fly bhp, in to a good figure, even tho poorer at the wheels bhp, etc
i think sometimes we become a little tunnel vision, around these areas, if you spend £500 on a remap, you want to see the highest bhp possible.
im afraid dave things in life are not just black and white, you have to look at the bigger picture, just cos one company says something, doesn't mean its right!

I am slightly off on the S60R remap - I thought the gains were higher - but not so - at least not on the remap alone - So for that I am sorry. I was working off the gains for the older cars - My bad!
I was just sharing the conversation with the 2nd point - so no point really.
In terms of the RR results - I would be more inclinded to believe the VT Dynojet that any twin roller - due to the lack of tyre deflection and roller climb. I also believe them coz they have no reason to lie about it.
There is no way that it is possible to fudge the figures with the Dynojet software - I know that much. Yes you can alter the car to get the best out - eg pumping up the tyres etc. I guess there will always be some variance - but why spend all that money to get dodgy figures?

The best dyno i know of is my BUTT!, lol, the old butt dyno!, you cant beat it!
