3.0S V6 Capri Restoration

Thought I would post up a few pictures of the 3.0S V6 Capri me and a good friend have been restoring over the past two years. Its now pretty much complete and just awaiting a few little parts for the MOT. The car came from a scrapyard near Dover and was in a complete mess when it was first bought for the sum of £800. Throughout its restoration it has sort of turned into a Hybrid capri. We had to make use of parts from mk2's and mk3's to get the best finish we could given the funds available. The biggest and most challenging part was not practically rebuilding every panel through rust but replacing the roof! Oh yes the roof! It was a model with a sunroof and the water chanels had rusted away so far to the extent the A and C pillars were rotten. To solve this we sourced a roof from an non-sunroof model, cut it off and welded it on. Not as easy as it sounds trust me. A great steal half way through was a set of 2.8 Special leather recaro's. The final colour was the new Focus RS blue.... the car had become such a mix of parts throughout that it made little sense leaving it original, so it turned out a little unique. Chris put it in for its MOT today and it passed on everything bar emisions, a decent carb setup should sort that out. Thoughts of additions welcomed ;) Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Got two mates revisiting their youth and doing similar work, one Mk1 XR2, and the other Mk3 XR3. Back to visiting Ford shows I think..

Very nice........apart from the Mk2 bumpers on a mk3 (or is it a mk2 with mk3 headlights), never did like the mk2 bumpers..Stop it now your making me want a Capri again. Oh...Bet the Turbotail was hard to get hold of, they where like rockinghorse poo when I had one and that was about 10-12 years ago.

Post 381591 by The Flying Moose on 2011-05-29 22:31:29

Yeah its the Mk3 with Mk2 front and rear valences. Simply couldnt afford the brand new Mk3 versions and there were plenty of Mk2 parts available. Like I said it sort of turned into a hybrid of many parts but I think its been worth it. Here's a few more pics, you can see the Mk2 front and rear bumpers quite well. Chris had the option at one point to purchase the X pack kit for it but chose not to. I do like the Turbo-technics rear spoiler alot. Can you spot the modified front indicators too? looks really good emlyn deffinatly a car to be proud of

Post 381598 by The Flying Moose on 2011-05-29 22:37:57

Yeah I agree Dean, Chris won on that argument. I think it needs a set of 15's on it really.

Post 381600 by WOODY T5 on 2011-05-29 22:44:50

yaeh some nice 15" brooklyn`s would go sweet on that.

Post 381608 by deathrider311271 on 2011-05-29 22:53:22

looks good, its a Turbo Tail made by fords RS department nothing to do with Turbo Tecnics, as said before it really needs mk3 bumpers and the rubber side strips to finish it off. If u need any parts for any capri give me a shout i can get hold of anything for them, im pretty sure my mate has 24 valve heads for the 3 litre, they wont be cheap tho lol simon

The engine bay is a bit of a mess to be honest at the moment. deathrider I have a good source for parts thanks (capri scrapyard in Donington on Bain) but will bear it in mind. We also have a spare engine from a reliant Scimitar as it share the essex V6 with the capri. Yeah james its been ongoing a while but never thought to post anything on here.

Post 381676 by t5 stealth on 2011-05-30 01:43:04

personally i think lose the boot spoiler and fit the proper sponge one and lose the wheels, it looks better on 4 spoke rs wheels rather than 15s, as it is a 3.0s and not a brooklands.... good job tho, good to see them still alive :)

Post 381872 by The Flying Moose on 2011-05-30 17:22:11

Martin has been very helpful for parts deathrider wouldnt hesitate to buy parts from him again. Even the little bits like seat belt bolts which are worth pennies in a sale he is willing to put his time in to help you get the right one.

Post 382050 by Jim S70R on 2011-05-30 21:05:24

Great work the car looks stunning.

Post 382051 by AndysR on 2011-05-30 21:05:34

I think the car has turned out brilliantly, I do think it would benefit from larger wheels, perhaps some Cossie 2WD crabsticks or the Brooklands alloys but everything else I love, the exhausts look perfect I love the rear stance with the spoiler. Job well done, big thumbs up here :)

Very nice and nice to see a restoration of a lovely car....even if a bit tricky driving them in the wet ! My old chap bought a brand new top of the range 2.0 in in 69 for around £1300. Deathrider's 3.7 twin turbo sounds interesting :yikes:

Always had a soft spot for old Fords - had two Mk2 RS2000s. There was always that Manta vs Capri thing going on - I had two Mantas but respect a big engined Capri. Oh, but the motorsport heritage of the Manta 400 rally cars...

Love it.... do like capris. Mates brother had a 2.8i when i was younger, in the blue and silver colour. Then another lad bought a mk2 3.1 in silver. Very plain looking apart from some nice period alloys and a small front and rear lip spoilers. 6 webber carbs and sounded like an animal. Didnt have to try hard to swing the back round.

Wow what memories guys, i was in the Portsmouth CC back in the late 80s when i bought my 2.8i in Black, a fellow member took me out in his Blue 2.8i Special turbo technics bloody hell that was fast in those days. We used to go out in the countryside for our run outs and take us through a small village called Droxford there was a White Tickford parked up for years out on the street, must be worth a mint now. I am afraid the rot took my Capri, best mod i did to it was the Janspeed exhaust and manifolds along with a 4sp box, twice i blew that bloody 5sp up.. I think my sister has all of my pics of the car, so i will try and get them..i went onto the Mitsy wide bodied Starion after the 2.8i..

She had to go and be a fool by getting with a woman beater (Chris Brown) Tickford Capris are rare as hens teeth excreted by a rocking horse! Certinaly not cheap although I was at an Old Ford meet last month at Leemign Bar on the A1 and weirdly there was a TT 2.8 and a Tickford parked next to each other!

Well nothing new to report but the car came out today for its winter run around the block and make sure everything is still working. There was a flat tyre and she needed jump starting but nothing unexpected after the last few months hibernating in the garage. Just thought a couple of Pics and a short video of the tickover was needed. They sound phenominal at tickover and with a little beans... the video doesnt do it justice.
Think you need a bit of leather treatment sometime...
That it does, along with many other little things! The RS Special recaros have not long been fitted and need a real "going over". At the moment the big job is re-building another essex v6 removed from a scimitar to place in this one with the unleaded conversion and a general overhaul completed.
