Hi guys, as you can see by my post count I am new, so I will apologise in advance if this is a common problem and you've been asked 1000's of times! I just picked up my (new to me) V70 t5. Its a manual, 1996. For some reason the speedo is not working. I cannot for the life of me remember if it was when the owner took me out for a test drive in it 5 days ago. Has anyone got any ideas as to what it could be? I hope its not something expensive but it'll serve me right for not checking the car more thoroughly if it is

P1 isn't too hard to sort, I'm no expert but others here are. I'll leave this with them.

my money is it being ABS ECU related, there known for there poor soldering & dry joints on the main power feed. Speedo not working isn't a normal symptom but the speed pulse is taken via the ABS (or it could be speed ring missing off hub)

Abs ring missing? Is there a how to anywhere on here so I can have a look? It's in my mates garage and I don't need to start using it till next Wednesday, so I can spend a bit of time having a go myself before taking it to the garage!

If it was an ABS ring missing wouldn't the ABS lamp be on?

The ABS bulb could have been 'removed' or blown. All those types of lights should come on when the ignition is turned to stage 2 as a test.

If the ABS ring is missing (common fault) then its a new CV outer. Cost is about £70 plus fitting. Only problem is, they normally crack and spring outwards, damaging the ABS sensor in the process. So u may need a new sensor too - that won't be cheap. Very easy to check.

Quick update chaps, my friend has just checked before he goes to work and the abs light does not come on when the ignition is turned on. What does this point to now?
a ABS ECU faulty
Is that a re solder the dry joints inside the module job? Or do I need a whole new abs ecu?

Not a massively expensive fix, look on Ebay for someone advertising a repair - usually about £50 - £70. You can remove the unit and the car won't work any differently. Just held on by a few small torx bolts. Whip out the airbox and remove it.
a ABS ECU faulty
Or the bulb is blown.......

Or more like some one has taken out the bulb , to cover up the ABS fault. I have seen that more than a few times on P1 cars. regards Rogerb

Check the fuse first!!!! Has it blown or been removed?

Post 413675 by Mr pies on 2011-10-01 09:58:43
Check the fuse first!!!! Has it blown or been removed?
Don't think its the fuse mate as I believe the seatbelt warning light is on the same circuit, and I know that definitely working. I will check the fuse tomorrow though.

Update chaps. Spent about an hour removing the sensors, checking and cleaning them, all were fine. Was just about to remove the abs ecu and I thought I really should check the fuse... You know what Im going to say next! Suffice to say the speedo is now working. I just wonder why the fuse popped in the first place? And can I say thanks to all who gave me advice, brilliant forum!
