Changing ecu - risks?

Hi I've been offered a re-mapped ecu from another t5 for my 2001 v70 t5. Are there any risks in swapping them over? If it didn't work could I simply swap the old one back in again or will it lose its memory for example? Thanks Laurence

It only takes a few hundred miles to retrain the standard ecu, just like when you take the battery off for a while, afaik. just make sure you got an ecu for the model you have cos 850 t5's etc, don't work the same as ME7 ECUs.

Thanks, mines a standard 2001 v70 t5, new ecu is from a police 2002 t5. I figure its worth a punt as it *might* be remapped. Is it possible a remapped ecu will revert to standard when swapped to a different car?

I think (not 100%) the map stays but what it learns gets reset. If you're worried about the risk, then don't bother. Most plod ECUs weren't remapped, the map mine had on it from the plod had a mild map giving it a sort of overboost when you stamped the go pedal. This was confirmed by my local stealer but wasn't anything like a Rica map. If you want a noticeable difference, get your local stealer to update the standard T-5 map on your car. Had mine done with the new DIM and I now get a smoother power delivery and I get an extra 6-9 mpg.

Phoned local dealer in Nottingham, but they said there was nothing that would enhance fuel economy or performance. Is there a specific code I should ask for?

Try DPA 0115 9781117 or HLM 01527 879445 both will be able to provide a map which will give more go and MPG.

are the ECU's not coded to the cars on P2's?

Is go for a remap as lance suggests, just thought this might be a cheap alternative as I haven't got 350 pounds spare at the minute!

I reset quite a lot but this was different, much smoother and more efficient. perhaps they killed my plod map... which would explain my boost suspicions! lol.

What are you getting mpg wise? I'm averaging 25 driving on various types of road.

It used to be 21-25 due to traffic in the mornings - weekly average. Now it's 26-31. and the engine is notably smoother, even under hard acceleration.
