I'm amazed that my t5 went at all with this on it, I can't believe how bad it was and should of known that last owner wouldn't have done it as he said he had done other things that he hadn't and should of done it earlier but since doing a disc in my back last year takes me ages to get under a car and do stuff.

sign of "well used part" lol

i keep threatening to change BT's filter, but keep putting it off because i've heard the couplings can be a pain sometimes.

yes the coupling's can be a real pain took me 3 hours to do the filter change and had to put new nut on the bracket as bolt snapped and next time I do it think I will order some disconect tools as using spanners worked but would of been easier if I had the right tool, saying that think it's been on there for a long time.

the fuel that came out of mine wasn't as bad as that but wasn't far off it.
Post 425814 by JT on 2011-11-14 18:42:12
it was the cause of mine cutting out at 110! :)

Your not wrong one snapped on me and i had to run a replacement fuel line the length of the car.

I know when I changed the one on my XR4x4, couldn't believe the difference it made, went like a scolded cat afterwards, the fuel I drained out of it was grey!
Must do the T5's once its back on the road

Tip for removing the connectors - plier-type wire strippers, good for squeezing the tabs on the side. Old bill wrap them up in tape so they don't corrode.

Just been out to see my baby granddaughter and car is like a new car felt like it was pulling better low down and when on boost oh I'm happy now why didn't I do it ages ago.
Post 425917 by M-R-P on 2011-11-14 20:47:55
Great feeling aint it - doing something small and getting something big ;)
Post 425920 by daza-b on 2011-11-14 20:51:57
after seeing that im ordering a new filter tomorrow lol
Post 425947 by endo-t5 on 2011-11-14 22:03:29
Just need to set mbc up now and then get spare ecu mapped oh no looks like I'll need a lottery win as said I would only do a few bits and do like the boost.
As long as I'm not like some of my mates with their turbo cars as one has a 579bhp focus and others are scooby and 200's and rs turbos and they spend a few grand on there's hence I wanted to be different so got a Volvo.

anyone have a photo showing where the filter is located?
Post 426004 by t5_monkey on 2011-11-14 23:14:34
Wow... that's rustier than a Lancia after 3 years at the seaside.
Post 426007 by M-R-P on 2011-11-14 23:18:51
Just in front of the O/S rear wheel...
Not bad considering I just pointed the camera under the car and fired!
Hmm, looks like the fuel tank bracket needs some work...
Post 426027 by endo-t5 on 2011-11-14 23:55:52
Nah lancia wouldn't last 3 years at the sea side lol

cheers mate, will look at mine in the morning. what special tools are needed to open those connectors safely without breaking them?

Squeeze the grey bits together and pull (sometimes puts up a fight). Took me 5 mins. Wrap the conns with tape when you reconnect to prevent agro when replacing the filter next time.

The p1 cars have different connectors and they slide and I used a 17mm spanner and had to get another spanner in behind to force it of so be warned can be a nightmare on early cars.

Got myself a filter today, although looking under car.....it doesn't look like the above ones. Hopefully weather will be nice tomorrow and if I'm able i'll get it changed.
Post 426285 by endo-t5 on 2011-11-15 20:11:25
not like the above ones? Not rusty then? lol
Post 427283 by ncarnall on 2011-11-18 00:30:29
Well filter change went without issue (well only a slight issue with wrong part supplied but this was easily sorted at the local factors). Got splashed with petrol (nice... NOT) filter looked generally unrusty but when I emptied it a rather dark gunge came out! Not had chance to try it yet as Battery was flat this morning, Thats two in a week as Van battery died on Monday. So checked and topped up then charged all day and will give it a run in the morning.

Yep, I had a similar dark goo from mine. You'll notice a difference, slight unless you have a remap or other induction/exhaust mod and give it a ragging;)
EDIT The good filters tend not to rust, even after 170000 miles ;)
