Ok, after struggling with it for a while now I give up.. The desktop pc upstairs has lost its Internet connection, it lost it a while back and I can't manage to get it working, it's. It the router as the laptop is still working ok, it's not the cable linking the of to the router as I've tried a wireless dongle that plugs into the USB and it still has no Internet connection. The only thing I can see is in device manager there is a question mark next to 'Device manager, this seems to contain "Pci bridge device,Pci memory controller,Sm Bus controller and Video controller" these all have question marks against them except for the video controller which also has a cross through it.

Give it a slap? :)

Sounds like an update has upset it somehow. Might be worth doing a system restore, back to the earliest days available?

Tried that , didn't work. I think it's lost the drivers for the stuff with a question mark, as I can't get it to go online to look for them where can I get hold of them?.

Usually if there is a question mark in device manager it means the driver for the device is missing or not present. Have you at all installed or removed anything prior to it failing to connect? The best suggestion I can give you based on what you have described would be to make a note of the make and model of the PC, google the details and search for "drivers". Copy them to a USB stick or similar and try re-installing them. Alternatively browse the PC manufacturers page for drivers.

That's the Problem, I haven't the faintest, it's in a custom case, tried looking on the motherboard but I can't see anything specific.
That's the Problem, I haven't the faintest, it's in a custom case, tried looking on the motherboard but I can't see anything specific.
When you plug the cable to the router into the computer does it plug into the motherboard or is there a separate card installed which you plug this into? Somewhere on the motherboard there will be markings relating to the manufacturer. If however you cant find this when you first start the PC up it will be displayed in the initial screen. Alternatively when you first boot the PC up go into bios, (using either the f1 key or delete key) and the manufacturer details should be listed there.

Have you tried booting it in "safe mode with networking" ? (keep tapping F8 when you see the bios screen on startup) it might go on line with basic services.

is there a yellow mark against ethernet controller? if there is pm me your address and I'll send you a card to plug into the pc. that will get you back on line.

The ethernet controller is built into the motherboard, I've managed to work out that the motherboard is a Winfast but in order to download the latest drivers I need to know what the chipset is, how do I find out?

Tomcat - Rightclick the '?' in device manager and go to properties.... Go across to driver and details - there should be a filename there. Enter filename into computer connected to tinternet, should tell you the driver type / model you need to download. Otherwise, do you know the model of the network card? if it's inside the tower, it should be written on the underside with a version number. Go to manufactures website and download the most recent update. (use a USB stick to transfer to computer) other option is to borrow a usb network card/dongle from a mate and then get windows to download the driver automatically IF it can locate it... get problems - shout. AMD , intel? core-duo, single, p4 etc etc... should help us know the chipset type. you should get the driver from there.

you can always download CPUID.... http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html it will tell you info on motherboard, cpu, and memory... from that, go to motherboard website and get the internal drivers.... don't worry about download an incorrect one by mistake - it won't go boom!

Having squinted badly I found that the mother board starts with K8CK80, it's running Xp, can someone please help me find some chipset drivers?, I've tried several and they've either done nothing or haven't installed for one reason or another, can't seem to find an exact match anywhere, all the ones I find are either K7 or K8N and neither of these seem to work.
