Hi all, I am very new to this forum but have been on other forums. Here are some of the post i have placed on the other forum. Hi all, I have had my t5 for 3 weeks now (Owned by two previous VOC members - im the third VOC member to own it) and thought id post up some pictures after cleaning it up. It is a t5 S with Mas Italy 17" titan replicas, air con, electric windows / mirrors / sunroof & heated seats - Not a scratch on it! It has full service history and all old MOT's and receipts. very pleased with my purchase. heres some pictures Image more to follow.... Image Image Image Image heres a photo before six hours of cleaning the engine! : Image and after: Image Image so far the only modifications are a re-map (by one of the previous owners) I replaced 2 of the worn out assimetrico's (it has p zero assimetrico's all round) and a genuine volvo strut brace fitted last week. i will use this thread to post my modifications and maintenance. cheers Barry

finally i got the camera working. here are some pictures of my interior after i stripped the interior out and clean it all. My nice new arm rest. Image The all new carpet, freshly cleaned. Image Image After cleaning the car inside and out it decided to snow heavily the next day, so i took the opportunity to take it out and get some pictures in the snow. heres the best photo out of them all. Image I will let you know of the next time i get something changed or added to the car. cheers barry

I know its been a while, but finally got round to do some more work on the car. And after waiting 3 weeks for the braided brakes hoses, i finally completed the 302mm brakes conversion with the braided brake hoses. We had trouble with getting the bleed valves un-done but with a bit gentle persuation they loosened off. Here are some pictures from the day: Image Image and the finished project: Image As you can see we also painted the carriers and calipers in copper. Which i think it brings them up alot. it has made such a difference to the handling of the car, for the price of the conversion its a well worth upgrade. cheers Barry

I was just looking through my thread and realise i was missing out that i have now got some v70 rear lights. Here is a picture of them off the car. Image I will post another picture of them on the car when we get some nice weather (if we ever that is). cheers Barry

Post 473369 by barrysc on 2012-03-12 18:33:50

hello again, Once again been spending more money on my T5, not that im regreting it, i just received another delivery of parts for my suspension upgrade. This includes:

IPD Uprated Drop Links
Powerflex Poly Top Mount
New Lower Control Arms
Koni yellow Rear Dampers
Here is some pictures of them off the car, they aren't being fitted until around the 25th of this month, so i will have to post some more pictures after that. Image Image Image Image I am also waiting for a rear strut brace, but they were out of stock. So i have to wait for it to be sent from IPD, which will take a couple of week to be delivered. Cheers Barry

hi all, Finally found some time so fit the V70 rear lights, Easier than i thought and yet such a big difference they make. I also took the time to T-Cut and polish her, It took about 8 hours but it has made such a big difference to the look of the car. Here are some pictures of the car after my 8 hour cleaning stint. Hi all, Long time no post. I have done a few "minor" changes to the car since my last post :) Firstly i changed the door handles to V70 ones and colour coded side strips to match. Next i bought a few bits for my car: Image 1x MANUAL donor car Image New 850R clutch Image Poly tie bar bushes Also solid gear linkage bushes from a Toyota MR2. Here are a couple of photos of the fitting process: Image Image Image Image Image Image The car drives perfectly, very pleased with the outcome especially as i am only 23 years old and have only worked on cars for the last couple of years (the first year very casually). I would also like to thanks Dooby for his article on "how to convert auto to manual" it was very informative. cheers Barry

Hi all, Finally got round to getting my next mod! Its an stainless steel OBX Turbo back exhaust from the USA. Image Image Image 3 Inch Downpipe with 2.75inch cat-back system. Image Image Image Image I had to change the Exhaust housing of the turbo as the flange was too small. Just waiting on a few more parts then will post pics once fitted. Barry

Post 473378 by barrysc on 2012-03-12 18:38:47

With this system i also got a spare downpipe which didnt fit the turbo, so i dont need it and i will be selling it soon . Image Image Barry

Hi all, it's been a while since I have put an update on the forum. I have today fitted a walbro 255 fuel pump. Really thought it would be harder than it was! But thanks to RT mechanics I went very smoothly. Here is some pictures: Image Image I have also painted a few bits in the engine bay, I painted the spark plug cover , throttle cable cover and the battery terminal cover in the same colour as my wheels. Image Image I will soon be putting the car on a rolling road to see what it is running afr and power wise. I aslo will get the injectors cleaned and flowed soon. Cheers Barry

Post 473381 by barrysc on 2012-03-12 18:40:15

Hi all, Spent a good few hours cleaning the car today, i also clay barred the paint work and polished it. I have never tried clay bar before but the result is the best it's ever came out as! After doing the both clay and polishing it feels like glass! Here's some picture only taken them with my phone: Image Image Image really pleased with the results. I will be doing the same with the wheels soon. More updates to follow very soon Cheers Barry

I have some top tips on great product to protect your finish once clayed (stops dirt sticking in the first place) & some great degreasers for the occasional tar spot? IPD HD ARB drop links are a waste of money IMHO - as the set I had lasted no better than the originals from Volvo. I have now a set from Mehle - which are much better.
I have some top tips on great product to protect your finish once clayed (stops dirt sticking in the first place) & some great degreasers for the occasional tar spot?
Try this stuff. We use it on our V6 Clio, it's lovely stuff. Don't let the description put you off! http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wax/collinite-no-845-insulator-wax/prod_208.html

Post 474002 by barrysc on 2012-03-14 20:01:45

One Sunday morning whilst on a 'spirited' drive, having a play, in 4th gear at 4000rpm I had a sudden loss of power and plumes of smoke pouring out of my exhaust making the road behind me disappear.. After having the car off the road for a while I finally decided to find out why the car was pouring oil out of the back and a total lack of power. From doing a compression test I discovered that the compression was down on cylinder 4 so I took the head off to see what was going on. Image Image A brief inspection made it clear why there were problems. Image I then took the engine out of the car and stripped it down with the help of T4Mark and iMacca... Image Image Image Image Image Image You can see the detonation damage on the piston where it has blown a hole and melted it at the same time, also melting a crater in the side of the cylinder bore. We suspect this is from a sticky injector as there were only very tiny signs of det on the other pistons. More updates to follow... Cheers, Barry.

Post 474008 by Volvostorm on 2012-03-14 20:06:05

Unlucky, its made quite a mess of that bore :(

Post 474013 by the young mechanic on 2012-03-14 20:15:12

thats a bummer

Post 474019 by barrysc on 2012-03-14 20:25:20

After identifing the issue it was clear that the engine couldn't be reused so I sourced a donor engine from Niles. Again with the help of my friend (Imacca) we stripped the engine apart in his mancave to rebuild with stronger internals. Image Here's some pictures of the engine in various stages as we stripped it down: Image Image Image All of the bearing journals look in good condition and the bores look good too not showing any signs of glazing or wear. Image Image Image Image And lastly, an arty shot of the original pistons and rods (one piston with special lightweight conversion): Image The block and head have been taken to AMS in Burgess Hill for machining, honing and porting. It should be back along with many more parts in a couple of weeks. Cheers, Barry.

Ahhh, those photo's bring back memories! :)

Post 474026 by barrysc on 2012-03-14 20:40:22

Also decided to buy myself some little goodies! Image Image I got the Quaife diff installed and my gearbox reconditioned by Bexhill Gearboxes who gave me a really great service. On inspection they reported that my gearbox was in near perfect condition so ideal for the power I'm aiming for. When I told them it had done 210k miles they were very surprised! Cheers, Barry.

Post 474034 by Volvostorm on 2012-03-14 20:53:45

What other bits are you planning to get? Mine has a Gripper diff, I'll be interested to see what you think of the Quaife
What other bits are you planning to get? Mine has a Gripper diff, I'll be interested to see what you think of the Quaife
Got a long list, pictures to follow soon :D I've driven a few cars with Quaife diffs and always liked how they drive. I haven't driven a Gripper to compare but the reliability and lifetime guarantee with the Quaife swung it for me. Cheers, Barry.

Post 474057 by Volvostorm on 2012-03-14 21:07:15

I can't comment, as I'm yet to drive mine! But, I will say, the diff has been back twice already ;)

Post 474254 by Wobbly Dave on 2012-03-15 15:13:59

I really rate the quaiffe - made a huge difference at Cadwell & Oulton. Certainly has helped with shaving 1/2 second off my quarter. Almost pointless for the road, apart from perhaps winter time. It is far too tempting to do roundabouts 7 & certain circular/serpentine national limit slip roads at ridiculous speeds - BAD WOBBLY!! (M54 Jnc 5 eastbound, M6 Jnc 15 Northbound from the A500, M5 Jnc 5 Northbound) LOL I like the way it comes in & out quickly but gradually.

Hi all, Just a quick update, its been like christmas all over today just recieved the following:

Ipd front and rear anti roll bars
KL- racing 60mm Intercooler
BSR induction kit
Image Image Image Image Sorry about picture quality, took them on my phone. The engine is still at AMS getting the work completed and still have more parts to follow in the post :) Cheers, Barry.

oooh nice! I assume they're awesome? Maybe I should just go for coil-overs... Are they bumpy?

Post 759624 by barrysc on 2015-02-12 21:12:48
oooh nice! I assume they're awesome? Maybe I should just go for coil-overs... Are they bumpy?
They are fully adjustable, they are not too bumpy but it doesn't bother me if it is as they made the handling so much better.

Post 759629 by Theador on 2015-02-12 21:32:47

Yeah think I'll stick with a bit of bounce, The Eibachs are OK, Next Mod is going to be a Gripper Diff I think. Car's got too much power now for the standard M56 box. Anyway, I've just realised this is not my thread, and I've totally hijacked it!! Sorry, very rude. Nice work on your motor Barry, look forward to the next update.

Looks gorgeous Barry! Looks like you're having fun using it for what you built it for. No point in modding it to the hilt if your not going to use it (and thrash it round the track :D ). How's Marks T4 going? I remember reading his original build thread a few years back. Also where did you get those bucket seats from? My T4 is stripped out and I'm considering fitting some myself.
