Well with the S70 T5 and 850R now gone (pictured below) it was time for another Volvo. Image Image I spent many hours considering what to go for next, ideally something that can also replace the Escort TDDi as it had a habit of causing me cronic back ache on a journey longer than five minutes. Well I'm sure you'll be pleased to know I havnt left the fold! The weapon of choice then... A Volvo S60 D5 SE. The cars on a 2002 plate and has 140k on the clock. All extra's fitted inc retro-fitted parking sensors (hate them!) and the RTI system. Its got a little service history and requires a new intercooler which I have ordered at a cost of £140, as a result however I picked it up for a bargain price of £1200. Here goes: Image Image Image Image Image So far Im very impressed, has alot of poke for a lowly 163bhp motor and best of all no matter how you drive it wont drop below 40mpg, infact its averaging 49 at the moment with mixed driving. First tank of fuel was just under £100 and has run out after 750 miles. Oh and the seats are bloody fantastic! So the plan? Well I still aim to get a project 850 T5 also but use this as the main driver. Other than that maybe try a D5 monster? Not sure how far you can go with these but I have seen some at over 250hp. Perhaps a map for now and a larger turbo etc later. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates...

Nice looking car... Sweep stake on how many months this one lasts....!!!

Looks like a tidy honest car you've gotten yourself. Be interesting to see how you progress with it, having driven a 205hp twin turbo D5, these units have a lot to give so will be interesting to watch your progress :)

With the miles you do emlyn, it makes sense to have a diesel. Word of caution though, this is supposed to be your every day car, you don't want to go too far with modding and lose its reliabilty. Stick with a remap and save the big mods for your track toy.
Nice looking car... However if 250bhp is achieveable and you can still get 40mpg then it cant be all that bad, besides the torque will be way up on a T5 tuned.
Interesting :) see what it does on the strip might give Liam a chance :)
Probably some pathetic time!
Looks like a little sweetie you got yourself there Emlyn. Just keep an eye on that DIM...
DIM, DIM ,DIM blah blah (ignoring you as I dont want to chance it). Annoyingly however a bulb has blown (grey one) and I know need to source a replacement.
With the miles you do emlyn, it makes sense to have a diesel. I spent over 6 months looking for a nice 540, thinking if i see a nice s40 t4 auto come up, i'll have that instead, but none around. Finally find a decent 540 and a few weeks later, up comes a t4 auto, then another one last week. Bloody typical. lol

A little update on this. Have just purchased the car a present, not keen on the Thor alloys in the slightest so after a refurb it will be sporting these new boots: Image

Post 478467 by M-R-P on 2012-03-28 00:29:26

Nice ;) With a little TLC, they'll look the mutz. (not that they don't already) Seen JUDGENINJA's refurbed wheels? look spectacular on his motor (different wheel but I thought I'd mention it)

Post 478468 by p fandango on 2012-03-28 00:47:21

Neb's are lovely looking wheels, first dibs on a Thor if you sell them individually

Post 478676 by The Flying Moose on 2012-03-28 22:15:31

Well I bit the bullet and paid a visit to eurocarparts today and bought a new IC, logic being all things pointed towards it and if nothing else a new IC on a ten year old motor wont do any harm. I probably paid slightly over the odds at £190 for a patent part however I needed it solving as I have alot of driving tomorrow and Saturday. I got her on the ramps today and with the help of a t5pete began work, all in the swap was far easier than expected and took only an hour and a quarter. Image As soon as the top panel was removed the signs and symptoms were present... Image Image Image Image Many thanks for your help today Pete! Heres the dirty derv between two immaculate Volvos :) Image

yep quite a nice bow on that. I did mine with the bumper in place, but think it took a bit longer than 1.5hrs. Has it cured the smoking?
One of Volvo's best alloy
Yep I agree, I think along with Pegs, they are one of the few that suit most Volvo's and dont look dated.
Looks good matey! Good effort on the new IC!
Cheers Pete, was much easier than we thought it would be... despite having to dismantle the entire front end! I'm on the lookout now for a P2 V70R or S60R Front bumper :)
didnt you buy that car to save money mate?
Yeah but you only live once! You know my track record frankie... cant be far behind the master in cars per year quota. Besides an R front end, boot spoiler and re-map will put it apart from other D5's :)

OK a small update on an otherwise fairly boring project! Purchased the new clutch, believe it or not the cheapest I managed to get one was from GSF and the whole kit brand new cost £105inc vat. Just waiting on a DMF now. As for the car well a few updates in the pipeline to name but a few below. Image Firstly she was back on the ramps for a full service inc all filters, oil and aux belts. Also fitted two new Continentals on the rear (quite large 235 profile) as the §§§§kang no grips or whatever they are were truly appauling and to be honest dangerous in the wet... I honestly believe they were made from plastic! Next a couple of cosmetics to tidy her up as when I bought her she looked like someone had taken a brillo pad to the bonet and to top it off added a 12" key scratch, in addition to this there was a dent in the rear tailgate. The scratch: Image The solution was simple and a blessing at the same time! Shem from T5D5 was braking a S60 and low and behold it was the same colour as mine... £100 later I have a new bonet and tailgate which was far cheaper than re-sraying and repair and looks spot on. As a plus the new tailgate also features a genuine Volvo Spoiler. New Bonet fitted: Image Old tail: Image New Tail: Image So cosmetically we now have no more scratches and dents, excellent. Now for improvements... well the plan includes a 30-40mm drop, fit a set of refurbished 18" BBS Nebulas, windows tinting and something a little different. A bargain opportunity arose to aquire a "facelift" so I know have this in my possention: Image For those who dont know an S60R front bumper. All in really happy with the car and its running excellent. Once the clutch has been done ill be looking into a remap... certainly pleased with the economy as you certainly wouldnt see the below on a T5! (ok this was an experiment driving at 55mph... it didnt last long!) Image Image

I can get 950 miles to a tank......sorry make that 3 tanks. Cars coming along well, should look good with the R front on.

Nice project - are you going to fit the later headlights etc? R bumper and those 18's will look excellent!

good effort Emlyn. doesn't the R bumper require different supporting framework? I'm sure it'll fit tho :)

Post 501012 by The Flying Moose on 2012-05-20 16:54:58
good effort Emlyn. doesn't the R bumper require different supporting framework? I'm sure it'll fit tho :)
Yeah I believe they do, however much simpler than you would think... just two replacement mounting brackets for the front. About £15 from Volvo.
