Following on from Camerons 850 sale thread here is a thread to discuss the morality/laws/etc of breaking cars. Please do not attack any persons on this thread.

could well end in tears. :(
It's always a shame if the car's a runner, but hey, it's like eating meat... we all do it, even if we don't kill the animals personally. Cars are broken when they're worth more in bits than running, simple as... it's economics. In contrast, I think the recent debate was more about using the Forum community to turn a profit, above helping members, rather than the morality of breaking cars - at least it was from my perspective. So actually a different topic to this one.

hey,if one car has to die to save more than one, surely a good idea??
hey,if one car has to die to save more than one, surely a good idea??
Agree.
Surely its the state of the car before it gets broken. I'm probably a bit olde fashioned like that, use something for its primary purpose until it can no longer be used for that purpose, then reuse what you can and recycle the rest

i think im inclined to agree......... its a sin!! if its still a functional car then breaking for more £££££ is a little sad, but each to his own i guess... who am i to judge what someone else does with their own property.
I'm not against breaking at all, i guess its a car being put in the crusher and turned into bean cans. If every parts possible can be reused then i guess its not too bad. I just brought a mint bumper for my car and asked what happened to the bonnet? Went to the crusher for scrap, thats annoying, such a waste.
hey,if one car has to die to save more than one, surely a good idea??
thats excactly what i aim to do with mine mate, its virtually dead so im breaking it for peanuts to help save others :)
thats excactly what i aim to do with mine mate, its virtually dead so im breaking it for peanuts to help save others :)
im on my 4th volvo now,and am fortunate theres a volvo breakers 20mins from me...saved me a fortune these last few years  even saved a set of volvo 340 seatbelts for my 4x4 sj !!!!!!
Put it this way. Not everyone can AFFORD to sell a car, In a hurry, And make enough to make ends meet. My Bruv's 9000 Aero is worth about £900 as is. This is a stage 3.5 car with custom map and modern apc mod, Larger Abbott intercooler, Abbott full exhaust including 3 inch downpipe, Abbott inlet pipe, Suspension, Aero seats, Aero alloys, Etc. Etc. Worth about £2000 in bits... It really is a no brainer... It's just metal. Nothing lasts forever.
All i'll say is..................it took me a while to read all the posts since i was last on. lol
Unfortunatly, If there comes a time i need to sell mine, it will be in the form of Parts. As she is only a lowly 855 t5 Estate, She is in extremely good condition but unfortunalty worth far far more in Parts. If how ever i had a Volvo T5r or R in the same condition i Would certainly think twice before doing so As these are far more desirable and will be of more of a interest to enthusiasts and collectors in the long term.
But there may come a time when lowly t5s are rare
But there may come a time when lowly t5s are rare
They will still be worth less than the R's tho.
Well we all know ( or should ) who this is back handedly aimed at despite the OP's titleing !! If someone buys a car, even if it is the worlds greatest Volvo, it is up to the buyer what they do with it. Have you ever bought bits from someone who has 'had them in my garage' for years ???? Or some one who has lost thier job/ partner/ storage/ etc/etc/etc !!? Bet you have. So simple question about this..............if a car (we know which this thread is really about ) is broken instead of kept on the road, then in 50 years time when you say 'ooohh I need such and such part' and he says 'hey oop mate, had these bits sat in my garage doing nowt for 50 years, yours free' . Would you then complain about a car being broke for spares when it was ??? Incidentally, never seen a post saying it is yet ! Please dont come back with a 'talking generic' response ,everyone should know by now what this superfluouse thread is about !!!
Some times it is sad to see cars get broken and sold for parts! But it should be up to the individual! Its like my car is worth about 2.5 hole But if I was to break it and sell it in bits I would have no trouble making 6k from it! If I was to part with my car it would be a no brainer not to brake it! My 2p worth
Well we all know ( or should ) who this is back handedly aimed at despite the OP's titleing !!
Not aimed at anyone in particular. (As I stated). This is merely an attempt to have a fair and balanced discussion without personal insults or attacks.
As Im sure you know I break Volvos, as do others here. I do have a moral standard, if ever an 850R or T5R etc etc was offered cheap and it was poorly I would NOT break it. I would try to save it or at least sell it as a whole to a fellow enthusiast for repair and reintroduction to the road. However, there are a few who do not share that view and will break anything just for the money. No names mentioned but I personally have seen examples of the 'who cares what it is, its worth money' attitude. Perhaps every 850R broken I should be happy at because that makes my car ever increasingly rare and hence the value will rise. Ultimately what happens to a car when it reaches the end of a nice life is down to the owner. During the 'scrapage scheme' many dealers either refused to take a classic in the making or valued it at over the schemes threshold. Same example......in Hungary they did a celebration 50, 100 and 200 Forint coin in solid gold. Right now you could buy all 3 coins for £1050. The scrap value of the coins for the gold is £1575. However, the coins are beautiful. Would you buy beauty and kill it just to make a quick buck?
Its none of my business what a person wants to do with a car, if they make more money in parts then so be it. I really cannot see why anyone should have a judgemental opinion on what another does to their own car. I suppose its one less make and model of that car and as such makes the others on the road that little bit rarer.
could well end in tears. :(
What have I missed?
What have I missed?
Just going from the other thread, this is quite an emotive subject for some, so was expecting the worse.

Not. :D
Scrapping or breaking certain cars etc is not a problem it's been happening since the start of time. Its just a pity that a lot of the metal is shipped overseas instead of being used in this country. I just wish i had still some of the vehicles that i have got rid of over the years. They would be worth a bit money now.More than if they were broken for parts!

When I sell or give something away, it ain't mine anymore, its the new persons property If someone gives my kids money for a present, and then says what did they spend it on, my usual answer is lottery tickets, cos if they have given money, its exactly that, if kids choose to say I've spent it on XYZ then so be, but its their money to do what they like with.
