ok,60miles from home today, got back in the car,a 2001 s60 2.4 ts,turned the key and had message on dim "start prevent-try again" to which the car didnt start, tried again, same thing, started to have kittens, then put key in,turned to position 1,orange warning light went out,so did dim message, car started ok,have re-started car a fair few times after this and is all good... obviously,i take this to be a immoboliser issue, just wandered if anyone else has had the same issue??? ....or is this the start of impending doom!!!!(or just a glitch??)

It's one of these 'wonderful' irritating P2 problems. Apparantly someone on here told me it's down to other keys confusing a sensor next to the ignition barrell ( :wtf: ) Take the key out the ignition, lock the car (with the remote fob), but stay in the car, wait a couple of seconds, unlock it and then try to strart the car again as normal. It usually works first time, if not try again. Again, one of those things that irritates me about these cars. You won't get a fault code reading either - I've checked on mine when it's happened! ;) Regards James

If it happens again,I will try your way as shouting at it didn't work!!!

Actually, the key confusion thing isn't unheard of. A standard code reader won't pick up a fault like that but Dice will (probably) Another one to try is (don't try this if you worry easily) with the key in position II, hold the reset button on the left stalk and press the foglight button several times. This will bring up stored DTC codes from the DIM, but I never know what to do with the information once I've done it lol. Not too off topic I hope..:D
How are the codes read if you do not have a reset button on the stalk? Is it still possible.?

A quick Google says it should be the read button that is pressed. To show diagnostic information in the text window: Turn key to position II or start the engine. Press and hold down [READ] on the turn signal lever, and press the rear fog light button 3 times quickly. Press [READ] to advance to the next item. http://s60r.fadainc.com/tips/Diagnostics.pdf
How are the codes read if you do not have a reset button on the stalk? Is it still possible.?
Errrr, you got me there lol. Probably through DICE. I know that hitting the DIM repeatedly with a screwdriver doesn't bring-up any codes...

Isn't there a ring in the ignition that reads a code from the key, which sometimes plays up?

If you have a lot of keys on your key ring this can upset the pick up ring and will stop it reading the chip in the key,try it with the key on its own.

Lol. That reminds me, my Dad told me a story once where someone he knew had a Ford Sierra. This person parked it in a car park next to an identical Ford Sierra and when into the shop. When he came out, he got out his key, opened the door and realised he had got in the wrong car!! It turns out that Ford used a range of locks for the cars, some of which were the same and it was possible to get in to someone elses car with your key. Mad isn't it! :jaw:

Not uncommon. I could get into my mates Capri with my Capri key.
Isn't there a ring in the ignition that reads a code from the key, which sometimes plays up?
The technical term for what your refering to is 'Transponder ring'. The fault you have Shane is basically the transponder ring not detecting the transponder chip, which is built into the key; more than likely soldered to the pcb inside the key. There is nothing you can do to rectify the fault. If you just do what JamesT5 suggested then that should sort your problem. It may not ever do it again but if it does then you'll need to take both keys and the car to the dealer to be reprogrammed. A top tip is to leave the key in the ignition for a few seconds before turning to pos.3. I usually wait until all the lights have extinguished before i start mine, but that's me. Other people are in such a rush they usually just shove the key in the hole and turn it all the way to pos.3 instantly and try to start. It's these people i usually see at the side of the road that have a problem. If you do read the car with DICE, the only fault that will show up is the one relating to the key not being recognised. It won't tell you anything else. So you won't acheive anything there. Personally, i only have the car key in the ignition when i'm driving. I hate having a load of crap attached to the key ring bashing against my right knee, plus it looks a mess and wears out the ignition key and barrel prematurely. Having other car keys on the same bunch is a big no no too. The transponder chips in the other keys, in some cases, have been known to confuse the transponder ring and prevent the car from starting. Oh, one more thing. Never ever spray lube oil into the ignition barrel. This is a sure fire way of damaging the transponder ring as it is wrapped around the barrel. Even Volvo will tell you that. ;)

Relieving the tension always makes it easier to turn the key in the barrel and will also massively extend the life of your barrell.
