Stuck in park and looking for advice!!

Hello, I am a returner to VPCUK, I haven't been here for over three years and yesterday I returned home with a 1999 V70 SE 170bhp auto; lovely looking car in dark metallic blue and in very nice condition. I drove it home, over 200 miles and it was faultless and yet this morning, the battery is completely flat and I cannot, whatever I do, shift the auto gear lever from park and into any other gear, forward or back. Daft question I know, but would the flat battery have anything at all to do with this, or is there a possible problem with the release spring in the auto gear shift, the button under the top of the gear lever?? I would appreciate any advice or comment as I have not come across this before. Many thanks, James.

you need to press the shift lock button with the ignition on and your foot on the footbrake
