P1 V/C/S70 Double din head unit upgrade???? Any to avoid, what do i need etc

Just a quick one, im looking to ungrade my head unit. Probably one with a screen . Is it quite straight forward in the volvo. Halfords didnt seem to sure on it all. I know i will need a cage, and a wiring harness etc. I said would the original speaker still work as the new head unit prop wont be set up for dolby 5.1 etc . He wasnt sure. I just dont want to go and purchase all what i think i need and then realise they dont fit, speakers dont work or worse. Any of you with V/C/S70's or even late 850's Got any advice ? Also some pics of your head units would be awesome, means i can look for similars ones. or even if any of you have any of the stuff for sale .... Thanks In advance Dan

any stereo will work no problem, you only need the wiring harness, if you have a centre speaker you will lose that though, i have just fitted a bluetooth pioneer dvd player and its awesome, fitted to my merc though

Oh really? So no cage needed? Ive notice that there are 2black runners one on either side of the original cage thing. Do they not get in the way?

When I put a pioneer double din unit in my old c70 I had to trim down the runners you mentioned and all then went in smoothly.

I have a complete setup for your car including the loom. I will sell the loom adapter/wiring harness separately if you want. I am using single DIN with a flip up screen - alpine unit. Check my garage for fotos.

If so what sort of costs we talking for the items? I guess with single dim units you can put some gauges in the part underneath

After I sold the stereo, I went to put a single din unit in, but because I'd trimmed the runners down the single din cage didn't have anything to rest on apart from the pocket I put underneath which wasn't a big issue. When I sold the car I put the original Volvo double din unit back in with no problems.:)

The unit look like its supposed to of been standard with the car. Love it. The pioneer units aint cheap though are they???...

This is the same conundrum I have Rudeboy.....more to the point the dolby 5.1 ! Firstly, whilst the 5.1 is a 'unique' feature, I don't really think it's totally necessary unless you use CDs which were specifically mastered for dolby 5.1 sound (some live performances etc)...so pretty pointless, even more so if you just want to use your mp3 or i-slave corporate machine! I stand to be corrected on everything I say here (hopefully someone here with better stereo knowledge can clarify some points!), but based on specialist advise from BassJunkies in Wolverhampton this is what I can remember from that conversation, plus other info I've picked up here and there (could be all b***** tho!)... The 5.1 uses a completely incompatable amp AND speaker wiring loom, so if you want to overhaul the system you have to run cables - requiring a fairly serious removal of the interior (complete pain in the bum!). I can't remember specifics, but I'm sure if I wanted to run a new headunit (possibly double din screen) then I'd have to do fairly major alterations to the rest of the system. Quite often people just hardwire an aux feature into the tape circuit to use mp3 players etc, or some other methods rather than mucking with it. Am I correct in thinking there is a seperate amp for the dolby behind the stereo....I've heard that condensation from the heater system can drip onto this causing problems......true/false? Can someone clarify the differences between the 5.1 & non 5.1 systems (apart from the sc-901 & sc-900!), do they have different amps and wiring or was that info balls? Has anyone on here modified there cars originally equipt with the 5.1?? Bit of a confused response I'm afraid, but the only time I've seen different stereo setups, it's on non 5.1 cars! I really wanted to ditch the 5.1 but fear it will end up being and utter pain and costly? Also, if the 5.1 was deleted, I was thinking of finding a sat nav cover from a C70 which could possibly used for a stealth install of guages :cool: Any advise greatly appreciated!

It was a lovely unit. Fully motorised, press a button and the screen went down and the dvds etc went in behind. Ipod in the glovebox etc.

You have to bear in mind with these cheaper brand products that although they pack more features something has to give at those prices and sound quality is often the victim. Personally I have a £400 JVC unit fitted, the quality is fantastic and the product looks good but the clarity is unbelievably considerably worse than the standard Volvo premium sound system.

I've noticed you both are talking like its a cheapy nasty none named brand. Im stuggling to find any unit from this make "dynavin" for under £489. They range from £489-749. They are the Upgrade units supplied in german motors..... VW and BMW. . . . . . . . . . . . Read some reviews on Bmw forums and they seem to say its a good brand

That said despite having a similar unit myself I would argue all the touch screen stereo's like this have crap menu's, or maybe its perhaps that I find it easier and less distracting to use an old fashioned button! Well i always like to try something once lol. I will keep you informed. Its for a 730miles each way trip to Switzerland in January to go snowboarding. I cant deal with my volvo head unit, no mp3, no screen, no films , and the arial is disconnected. Can only listen to CD's for a limited time. If i dont like it, i'll sell it and look for an expensive brand on fleabay. It Was just a last minute impulse bid and i won it . Time will tell.

Or go for a cheaper version double din? I bought a system from eBay for 199£ - double din. Tv Video features Brilliant sound system with integrated amp Sat nav ( but not the most updated version ) but I can do with that DVD / cd Ssd card Wire harness for the v70 included. I had it first in my v40 then moved it over in my v70 Aim quiet happy with it Also I can connect my ipad to it for full usage incl the screen and via versa. Sorry don't have any pics on here but can post some when back on the notebook if you want. I did not need the cage to fit but as said above cut one side of the runners. This unit powers the speakers as I would say better as the original cd radioi had in when I bought the car. And if you want to be cheaky and don't bother of the little things with the law connect the white wire to minus / chassis Ad you're videos and tv working while driving To enable digital tv you need to get a digital tv receiver which cost about 60 to 80£ and you can watch some channels. Would like to enable sky but don't work. I have a mate who try to get me one of them digital receivers set up for sky, may works soon if he can manage. Oh guess you want to know the make - its a x-Tron. Not the most hog branded version but I find it good. Touchscreen and good pic, sound quality.
