We are getting stickers. The design is copywrited therefore you cannot copy it to make your own. I'll be taking my sticker off my car today.

Post 578430 by Pinup_gal on 2013-02-27 08:49:47

How does it stink. Alot of effort went into the design work for the new logo?
Personally, I think that attitude stinks, members are promoting the site. I've made stickers for people who are fed up of waiting for stickers. I'll be taking my sticker off my car today.
lol, I have had stickers made up too, for both of my R's promoting the site and I just got my new number plates with the website address on them as my footer, these new ones would be no use to me because my windows are tinted, also I bet they wont be as nice as mine :P

Post 578436 by Santa on 2013-02-27 09:23:30

Think everyone needs to calm down. Yes we wont allow copying of design work for people to profit from. Thats either yourselves directly or the suppliers you choose. Stickers will come. As for site promotion, obviously we want members to be proud of the site but the bottom line is promotion enriches the community it doesn't line the pockets of the myself or the team running the site. (Which dedicate lots of time and funds to keep the site going).

Post 578437 by stephenevans99 on 2013-02-27 09:41:26

I don't think anything would REALLY come of it if I was to ask somebody to knock up a VPC sticker....would it?

Post 578439 by Santa on 2013-02-27 09:56:34
I don't think anything would REALLY come of it if I was to ask somebody to knock up a VPC sticker....would it?
Well we wouldn't necessarily know who created the sticker. I would be suprised/disgusted if any reputable outfit would print something you didnt own though.

Post 578440 by stephenevans99 on 2013-02-27 10:06:39

I think members are just a little frustrated that they want to buy VPC stickers to promote 'our' forum and that it's taking toooooo long to get them made....they better be the best thing since Vimto !!! That's all I'm sayin!!

Post 578441 by Santa on 2013-02-27 10:08:10

Just to add more to this. There is a fine line between us being unfair to members and effectively allowing theft. We had obviously turned a blind eye to Colin's sticker, after all it say VPCUK and doesn't match our artwork. We have in the past allowed individuals seeking permissionto use site artwork on one off non profit basis. Best thing to do if your comtemplating creating VPCUK merchandise for personal use us to contact us first. If its for personal non profit use we havent said no yet.

Interesting discussion on the copyright thing.. I agree the logo format is copyrighted, but isn't the font Stolen from Volvo brand? I can't of find any disclaimer on any Volvo brand to confirm if this is open source or specifically owned by Volvocars? Any reproduction of the letters wgarwovkcup... In an order that said www.vpcuk.org would therefore be purely coincidental and the copyright would actually be to Volvo?? http://comportal.penta.volvo.se/upload/Penta_id/PDF%20Guidelines%20Identity%20Rules/Pdf/Volvofonts_Usage_LanguagesAll_120820.pdf VPCUK.org wording is surely a trade name or trademark rather than copyrighted wording? I don't think reproduction is covered in trademark legislation, (actual wording for items that can not be trademarked is - "trade marks that are devoid of any distinctive character") it is more to protect against someone sets up to mimic business dealings under the same name? Anyway a savy person could recreate the logo an put a minor twist to differentiate it would then become its own original artwork and therefore it's own copyright.... Whether the printer could be sued for the reproduction is one of those arguments that could then sit in letigation for years where basically the person with the largest chequebook would win!! Not sure if I can actually remove this: Image

Post 595040 by JUDGENINJA on 2013-04-09 23:32:31

Yep for new cars, for pedestrian safety, the only advisory I had was to ensure no metal was prudruing dangerously. I have covers for end caps and the crossmember just behind the grille is factory standard and not protruding at all. The cut out is a safety feature.. I have an extra 4" before I hit some one!! Anyway I just need to find a compliant Mot tester.. The last one was at a Volvo dealership.

Not sure if I can actually remove this: Image
Hopefully I'll cover everything but apologies if I don't. (Doing this quickly). As I've said before VPCUK is just an acronym and weirdly one we share with Vehicle Purchasing Consultants UK. Yes resource (i.e. chequebook but also could be gold, knowledge, status or a well established legal team that can be called on etc) is important in court proceedings but so is drive (motive, intention, risk, resolve etc etc). Regarding minor changes, sometimes its enough sometimes its not. http://foglerrubinoff.com/IP-Current-Newsletters/A-Big-Red-Bus-Copyright.html shows a case (which personally I didn't agree with) where a case was brought and won because an image used was sort of similar to one previously commissioned. (It had a red bus and Big Ben in, that was about the only similarities). As for Drive, our intention is not to upset normal members or fans of the site by thinking the art work on this site is off limits by them. I've explained before that for personal use just contact us and ask, we haven't said no yet. Our motive is to ensure someone else isn't actively profiting from through the distribution of someone elses work or worse using the art work for underhand means towards the site and/or its members. It's not that we are looking to profit from it either. (On profitability, long term projection on sticker sales will make an absolute maximum of £800, anyone prepared to sell VPCUK stickers to make more than that would be ripping people off and they probably wouldn't sell anyway). Risk, obviously we are willing to absorb a level of risk and have proved this in the past, obviously for us stickers are less about making money (as there really isn't any money in stickers) and more about promotion, to be fair the site isn't ready for active promotion. So in truth we would risk more by not perusing our motivation but anyone wanting to profit would potentially be taking on more than £800 worth of risk. (And thats absolute maximum remember) . Resolve, I haven't given up yet and have no plans to. Which brings us onto resourcing. To some £800 is a lot of money and they may be tempted to try and make knock off stickers. To others £800 is nothing and it wouldn't be worth their while. So then it's just worrying about any situation between those two extremes. As for your sticker it wouldn't come under any of the above, it's more disgracing the good name of the site by plastering the name all over a rusty wing :P. (You can keep it there if you wish lol).
Its not the 'talks' that have delayed the stickers.....its the events around them...:ready2go::wink: Fair enough, i can only apologise for the delay.....:finger::jaw::wave23d::wink::hidesbehi
We hadn't even produced the new logo until late last August and we weren't sure if we would keep it. (Now grown on us though). In the background we have been busy with other things, whether it be related or not related to this site. For example tool creation to intelligently detect trespassers. We hadn't even produced the new logo until late last August and we weren't sure if we would keep it. (Now grown on us though). In the background we have been busy with other things, whether it be related or not related to this site. For example tool creation to intelligently detect trespassers. Cheers mate :)
To be fair mate, people just want stickers, they're not looking into going to court to get them, or trying to rip off other members, all we ask for is stickers!!! It's not like this is a new thing either, we got the last one at the Swedish Day last year, and that's nearly a year ago. No disrespect to Chad, but he's obviously a busy man, and plenty of people have offered to get them made for the forum, not as far as I'm aware for personal gain (we even have at least one member that can make them), so I'm a bit bemused why it's had to go through the channels it has, and taken so long. As for the site not being ready for active promotion, I'm confused, as we the members actively promote the forum when we're out and about, be it at drag meets, local meets, or just chatting to other Volvo owners we may meet, so ready or not, we're doing it.

Yes we are all busy and yes stickers have for quite a while being lower on the priority list than other things. We seem to keep jumping subjects. I wasn't aware we had a member that could get them made that we haven't already contacted? For one reason or another it hasn't worked out. The key word there is Active promotion. I'd consider word of mouth passive promotion which of course we wouldn't want to stop people doing either. Currently we aim to keep membership increase to around 25% a year until the site and associated processes work well. (Last year we pretty much hit 24%. Once site and associated processes work well then we will push for multiple times growth every 12 months).

(I.e. I'm not actively pushing everyone to push the site........though if it were truely rubbish here I'm sure no one would).
Something along the lines of copyright, and you allowing me to display a vpcuk sticker on my car, so I now have a T5D5 one instead.
When did I say anything about allowing you to display a sticker on your car? (It's your car at the end of the day). Believe it was about having the common courtesy to ask if you wish to produce your own stickers which match site art work for personal use. (And this was very specifically worded. I.E. If you wanted to write VPCUK on your car in pen it's nothing to do with me). Weirdly some others haven't had an issue with asking WITHOUT prompt and it allows us to keep track on who's using with blessing and who isn't. (For example someone who may wish to do so for profit. As I've said previously we haven't said no to anyone wanting to use artwork for personal use previously and even helped in certain cases providing vector drawings). Afterall, if I wanted to take your car out for a spin I'd have the common courtesy to at least ask you if it was OK to do so first explaining where I was going to take it.

Tell you what, because I'm well beyond reasonable all of the time attached is the vector drawing for the old stickers. Free to use. (For personal use. Not to modify though please).

Putting this more plain I knew about your VPCUK sticker. Did I do anything about it? I didn't because it didn't match the sites art work and as I've stated before anything else is nothing to do with me unless it was slanderous etc. As for comparison, is it that far off? Car, Art work, they both cost money to someone.

I'm amazed you got permission to use the Volvo logo on the stickers, although on saying that we did get permission for use of logo/font on our trackday T-shirts, and i believe VOC/volvoforums have permission to use logo on their site and merchandise Seems bizarre that you are/were claiming to own the copyright to the stickers, and would be making a profit (regardless of size) using someone elses copyrighted material

(But rather change the art work instead).
