I`m not a PC literate really so hope some of u can help.Basically my pc takes a long time to load up and goes slow especially when auto updates kick in in antivirus.I have Mc Afee installed and when the pc is slow and I check the cpu usage it jumps up and down up to 100% and it seems to be Mc Afee processes doing it .I had a new HD installed just last august. My opinion is this Mc Afee is crap and probably let a virus in but lets hear yr opinions.

I have some software that might (probably will) help here. PM me an email addy mate and I'll try and send it to you. Failing that, I'll stick it on a disk and post it to you. If you're worried about viruses etc, download and install malwarebytes, its free. But run it in safe mode for better performance.

Cool, you now need to restart the pc, open malwarebytes, open the virus vault (or whatever its called) and tell it to delete what it found. Stupid, I know.
Find what's causing it and "end task"
How can u tell?I can tell whats using cpu but not the memory.

Post 568989 by M-R-P on 2013-02-02 21:23:43

Hang on... "commit-charge"? you're using XP! 12 year old software dude - time to move on lol. Next to the CPU usage, should be the memory usage (iirc) Close anything to do with media player (wmp), that'll free a bit of space.

Post 568992 by claymore on 2013-02-02 21:25:45

All you've done is uninstall one resource hog and replaced it with another. I spend all day every day speeding up and servicing PC's and the two worst things that slow them down is McAfee and AVG.

Post 568993 by M-R-P on 2013-02-02 21:27:43

... and Norton
In a good hands maybe but in mine its crap. Now running avast and memory usage dropped down to 500mb,happy days.Cheers mate.
That's still way to high for XP, can you do a screen capture of msconfig, start up? Also, download smart defrag by iobit and run an optimised defrag.

Post 569059 by Kingsford G on 2013-02-02 23:09:08

Doesn`t wanna connect. Will try tomorrow. The pc also is running multimedia processes but I don`t know how to disable it as I`m not even using it.

Post 569129 by LeeT5 on 2013-02-03 11:07:11

Before you run any defrag programme you need to clean up the pc and get rid of all the unused files that windows hords in droves. All this crap your cpu will try to sift through when it trys to do anything and also i bet your pagefile is massive, using up alot of your memory. Google 'CCLEANER' Download from filehippo and install. Its a tiny program that wont use hardly any space. Open it up and first go through the Windows / Application tabs and tick the relevant boxes you want it to clean. Then click 'ANALYZE' When its finished and displayed the result (tells you how much crap you have got to remove) then just click 'RUN CLEANER'. This may take some time the first time you run it but after that running it once a week will only take seconds. Then once its cleaned the pc, you need to fix registry errors. Easy!! Under the cleaner button on the left side click on Registry. Make sure all the boxes are ticked then click 'Scan for Issues' Once finished it will tell you how many errors its found. Just click on 'Fix selected issues' and hey presto! Reboot your PC and you will already notice a big difference. Then run a defrag program and walk away as it will take ages mate. (Would have taken even longer if you didn't run CCLEANER first) Reboot pc and enjoy faster boot and faster access times.

Just done mine. Blimey, tons of crap. Nice one.

Post 569137 by M-R-P on 2013-02-03 11:32:22

Ccleaner is pretty good for freeware. I must admit, I'd forgotten all about that one. I was also gonna suggest wise registry cleaner but the one I'm using now is far more effective. Called PCTools Registry Mechanic - it does everything, deep registry cleaning and repair, system services optimization, disk clear/defrag, file shredding etc. Open licence wasn't cheap but It's paid for itself countless times.

Post 569163 by Haizum74 on 2013-02-03 13:11:48

First thing I would do is see what programmes are booting up when you start the computer, too many and you hog resources unneccesarily . Next I would clean out the clutter, CCleaner can do both of these and is easy to use. Third I would get Microsoft Security Essentials, its not a CPU hogger and is a decent bit of kit for free.

Hitman pro 3. Is Good for the uninitiated and will find all your woes. It's free the first time you run it. Also alt can be said for a good defrag and disabling indexing. Also if you have more than 2gig of ram force your Page file to 512mb.

Post 569687 by Nifton on 2013-02-04 20:29:44

Oh, n spybot seek n destroy is amazing. Totally un intrusive and gives great protection from trackers, bots & the like.
