I know James has done a thread regarding this topic, and it has been discussed in some lenght, (Normally with Smithy on the phone who assures me it will be ok) but as im just about to start this project myself (with lots of help) on my own Volvo, i thought it might be an interesting read of all the troubles im bound to get in and pictures with thanks and gratitute to everyone who helps** I know in my head it will be worth it in the end but as it my pride and joy i am a bit apprehensive and nervous... OK im §§§§ting myself. ** This is an open invertation to anyone who can weild a spanner, Bacon sandwiches and lots of tea will be provided! Updates will follow, probably with me crying over the keyboard

I've been looking forward to you starting this, look forward to seeing how you get on, unfortunately no spanner weilder here (M-R-P recons all I'm good for is holding the torch) but I'm sure it will turn out ok.....in the end, good luck !

I'd happily lend a hand but it is time I am short on - not willingness. Are you able to use a 2 poster or do you have a proper space to work in? My top tips are - 1 - buy a roll of sandwich bags & black marker. For each section you take off - bag & mark the bits that go back on. 2nd tip - any loom connections which are close to each other use liquid paper/tippex & mark the unions. 3rd tip - take photos as you go. I didn't take enough but the few I did take were very handy. Are you planning to drop the whole engine & auto as 1 or are you going to separate the g/b and engine in situ?

Post 582626 by The Flying Moose on 2013-03-09 22:19:57

Bloody good day out, quite productive I think from Auto to very nearly manual in a day is one hell of an achievement, albeit much of the hard work was done by Neal before the "Big Guns" arrived! As always pleased to catch up with you Neal, Carl and James. Car cranked over nicely and had pressure to the fuel system, as James says a couple of small bits left, air box, battery box, intercooler pipework and the front panel to re-fit and its pretty much there. Linkage and clutch all working a tested too, what a job that was... took 7 attempts to bleed the clutch! A few pictures anyhow: The Volvo repair fleet: Image Image The "Project" in question, everything coming nicely into place. Image Will a 5.0 Supercharged V8 fit in place of the T5 lump? Probably not... :( Image Smithy couldnt wait as always... tried to explain after attempt 6 that you cant simply pee into the bleed bottle! Image Nearly there... true team effort Image
Sorry so smithy did do some work then - holding the bottle & eating. Good stuff LOL
Yeah he did! Oh but I didnt point out he was two and a half hours late nearly and when he arrived it would appear me and Neal had been doing everything wrong! :hidesbehi On a less jovial note it was a real advantage to have so much "Volvo" experience in one shed, certainly sped things up and no doubt as a result all will result in a positive finish in the next few days.

Post 583215 by Nealevo on 2013-03-11 17:35:00

As some of you are now aware my manual conversion is all finished, It was a very long day, (longer for some as he had to drive 2.5hrs each way to lend a hand) but all the help was well and truely appreciated. So i would first like to thank Emlyn (The Flying Moose) Carl (Smithy) and Jim (JamesT5R) for giving up ther day and time for coming a very long way to lend a hand.. First to arrive was Emlyn after a near 200 mile drive and a 5:30 start, Smithy followed soon after ahemmmm oversleeping :) and James came later as he had his car on the rollers to amazing results. I made the job a little easier by removing the console and fitting in the gearstick and pedals a few days before the manic day Image I removed the radiator, inlet manifold and auto wiring harness whilst it was still in the car Then i dropped the subframe with engine complete Image Emlyn then removed the autobox and i spilt the gearbox oil everywhere, cleaned up the mess and then fitted the Flywheel, R clutch plate and pressure plate. (kindly donated by James) with a watchful and helping hand from Smithy (who had finally arrived) :) Image Smithy then added a thrust thingy majig and tightened up some bolts with his AIR GUN, manual labour is not for him... Image The S60R manifold was fitted whilst engine was out, i would have fitted my new turbo but it didnt arrive from the rebuild shop in time Health and Safety went out the window when we offered the engine, box and suspension up to the car with the help of the forklift, all hands to the pump to get everything lined up. Image Smithy went for a walk Image and came back with this!! Image Once the engine was in we fitted the wiring loom from the manual donor car and the freshly painted inlet manifold with my new blue injectors Image The clutch was a nightmare to bleed but 7th time lucky we got there. Lots of nuts and bolts were then tightened and retightened, rads in and exhaust downpipe was connecdted, subframe tightened with the torque wrench setting TAF Brakes were connected, ramp was lowered and it started to look like a car again. James somehow wiggled into the drivers footwell to connect the steering rack and bits. fitted a battery to see if me had ignition and it cranked over first time... Smiles all round and lots of relief from myself.... Day 1 over, it was a long day, again thanks to the SPECIAL PEOPLE for giving up their day.. DAY 2 Intercooler pipework, battery tray and fluid topped up, wheels fitted and hubs torqued up to Emlyn setting TAF.. Image Ignition on and first turn of key it fired up and idled perfectly, i had a quick look for leaks, a slight weep from the oil cooler rad hose, simple fix and its done. added my freshly painted bumper with new carbon splitter Image Whilst it was in the garage i decided to alcantara the roofling, side pillars and dash top Image Image Fitted my newly aquired manual R centre console Image There you have it a lot of work carried out by lots of skilled people...... and me, now its time to have som e fun. Thanks again XXXXX

Was a pleasure to help Neal. All things aside a bloody good job well done. Lets not forget you did the hard intricate work, we simply came and put it back together again. No doubt an immense pressure and worry off your mind and a great big dollup of satisfaction! Proof that a manual conversion can be done over two days with the right preparation, tools and knowledge to hand.

Ok the first drive was today, and........... ITS FOOKING AWESOME, I never thought that this would make so much difference, but it now feels much better and pick up is instant, i'm so happy (touch wood) everything went well no more leaks or hesitation. I swear its quicker and the quaife diff grips like a bastard. Thanks again to all, i will run it about for a few days to check everything and keep my fingers crossed.

I didn't know you'd put the quaiffe in? Good work - I like it too. Does this mean you'll be putting in some times down at Avon ?
