HU-803 IR Sensor?

Anyone got any ideas as to what the sensor is on the HU803? Image I've read that it's either the IR sensor for a remote control OR a light sensor to automatically adjust the brightness of the panel lights.

I'd of thought auto dimming would be done via the illumination wiring from the headlight switch

Mine automatically come on at dusk regardless whether the headlights are on or not....I think??!!??
