Seems that I am a hasty angry muppet.
I received a immediate response to my query with carputer.
After some suggestions from them, I compared my iPod with a different source via aux input. Sound was fine. When I subsequently checked my iPod EQ setting it was on 'small speaker'...
Changed back to EQ OFF and hey presto!
Obviously this didn't show itself when I compared iPod to iPhone on headphones cos they are small speakers!
So my install review should stop at ...
Install easy even for a muppet
Wheel controls as described
Sound quality exceptional
Just don't be a muppet and forget to check your EQ settings before ranting on a public forum!

Yep. Pretty fine.
Plan to go for the Brodit mount rather than routing to the centre arm rest as the iPod shows the track name during playback. Will be handy to have the Pod visible.
However I have had my first hiccup. Unit froze tonight then would only select a single playlist which it decided started with Boyzone! Have now reset the iPod and resync'd whole music list. Boyzone have been exterminated - will be asking the better half how they got there in the first place! Will see how it behaves tomorrow. May have to look for firmware updates.
Point of note: I was informed by Carputer shop that some people have apparently managed to get track names up on the head unit with the mini-disc firmware. Anyone know of this?

Discovered that the Grom supports 10 playlists (9 in reality as one needs to be empty) - That is the number of discs that the CD changer supports. I had 11 on the iPod. If you try to select anything above disc/playlist 10 it gets confused, shows 'CD 1' again and freezes until you wind it right back through all the playlists. Guess these aftermarket toys just take a bit of learning. Still very happy after another day use.
