Well as most of you will know I finally returned to Volvo ownership this week when I bought Sartain87's V70R, it's a manual car in silver with the dark interior. Picked the car up from Marc's in Kettering on Sunday at lunch time and then drove it the 200 odd miles home again, aside from a little pull to the right the car drove great. Once home I decided I wanted to clean the interior up a little and also do something about the leather as it had a few marks and some wear, out came the leather kit I've owned for forever. Sadly in the hurry to get it cleaned up I forgot to take any before shots but here's a couple of after shots along with a lovely view of the battered steering wheel which needs replacing. Image Image The to do list :- Electric windows dont work Rear wiper doesnt work Slight pull to the right blocked cat Wheels BADLY need refurbing Front and rear bumpers need re spraying, along with two splits to repair in the front bumper Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing. Tailgate trim needs 'Fix' kit Central locking on front doors intermitant Front mudguard missing Recirc needs re fitting Boost guage needs moving(keeps wobbling and it's really annoying) Headlights look very flat inside, will need replacing sooner or later. Possible warped discs. Handbrakes a little high. Door straps are broken on both front doors. Various small dents all over. I know this looks like a rather extensive list and well to be fair it is, but a lot of this is cosmetic and I'm more than capable of repairing it myself, Marc thankfully gave me a shed load of spares to go with the car so hopefull I will be able to rectify some of the faults without having to spend any money. Plans at the moment intail repairing the esentials such as the windows, rear wiper, pull to the right, blocked cat and central locking and then the rest I will do as and when I have the funds availble. Not quite sure what to do about the wheels as they're really quite bad, the kerbing is simply shocking, I may just wait till I dont need it too much over summer and refurb them properly. Here's a couple of pics that I took not longer after getting back but sadly before I cleaned it. After cleaning I polished off some of the black marks off the front bumper so it wont look as bad until I get time to fix it, I also removed the black strip from under the back window as it was starting to rust and was jutting out quite a bit on both ends. Also greased the rear door straps as they where making that lovely groaning noise that they do when they're dry. Image Image Image More updates later in the week once I've had time to get something else fixed, lol.

At least he screwed the boost gauge to the speaker grill, he must of been a smart cookie, you just have a grill to replace, better than a dashboard.

Ordered a repair kit for the tailgate trim on Monday and I've purchased a really nice steering wheel off Niles along with some of the other missing odds and ends. Today I've pulled apart one of the spare switch packs that Marc gave me with the car, all I can say is what an overly complicated setup!, that said I'm going to see if I can make one good set out of the two, after that's done I'll commence with pulling the car apart to repair some of the faults. If the tailgate repair kit arrives tomorrow then I will attempt to repair the rear wiper.

Post 598335 by Tomcat on 2013-04-19 20:19:29

Spent a good two hours on the car tonight trying to work out what was up with the windows, passenger front window was not quite shut and wouldn't move, took it all apart and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The motor works out of the car, the motor works in the car without the window attached, the window moves up and down ok, put the two together and ummm....nothing. I've managed to get the window shut by pushing it while pressing the button, when you press the button you can here the motor trying to move. After some playing with a couple of spare switchpacks (none of them where particularly good) I'm starting to think that either they all have the same fault or the fault lies elsewhere, the two passenger windows I can here trying to move, the two drivers side ones do nothing (other than the switch clicking when you press the drivers window). Anyone got any ideas?..or can anyone find me some of the previous owners (not Marc...obviously...I know him, lol) so I can try and work out what the hells wrong with it,it's almost like there's a voltage drop somewhere. Oh....Also acquired a replacement steering wheel that is a quantum leap better than the old one, I'll be trying to fit that tomorrow...hopefully.

Good work mate, keep it up. My mrs go's back to work next week after 10 weeks off. I can't wait to play a bit more with my car. Lol

Post 598638 by Tomcat on 2013-04-20 19:34:48

Cheers Biff.. Spent another couple of hours on the car today and actualy got a few jobs done, lol. Steering wheel is now replaced, the old one put up a valiant amount of resistance but sadly it wasn't a match for my hacksaw. I got the interior lights working again (only noticed they weren't working last night), thankfully it was nothing but a blown fuse. Drivers side front muflap has been replaced, it was missing before along with the rivets that hold it in place so the bottom of the wing could move around a little, I also noticed that none of the rivets in the wheel arches are the proper Volvo plastic ones, these will all have to be swapped out, my OCD wont allow them to stay, lol. I've removed the boost gauge, it wasn't to my taste and as it was only stuck on the dash top it was wobbling around looking cheap and boy racerish, haven't decided wether to just sell it on or keep it for checking boost issues later on. Also found today that one of the footwell lights (drivers side) was in the door pocket, upon fishing under the dash for the wiring I've found it but the positive has broken off the spade connector, have to re solder it when I get a minute. After some advice on ..Ahem...another volvo site (Volvospeed...sorry guys), I'm going to try putting twelve volts to each of the window motors to see if they're all working ok, if they are then it can only really be the drivers switch pack thats faulty... Image New wheel Image New next to ewww....old. Image New one fitted Image Oh dear..... lol..it got on my nerves and this was the result on the old one... I was going to do the downpipe and cat today but I just couldn't sum up the correct amount of interest, tomorrow it is then....maybe...if the wethers good....and I'm not busy finishing my coursework,lol..

Post 600228 by Tomcat on 2013-04-24 23:18:08

Checked the lights, if they've been sprayed then it's on the inside as there's nothing on the lenses. While waiting for some Uni stuff to render on the pc today I thought I'd nip out and swap the rear wiper mech for the spare one that was in the box of bits that came with the car...took me all of about ten seconds to remove the rear trim from the tailgate...here's why Image Yup, it was only held in place by two wood screws...WTF?..Seriously?... After getting over that shock I pulled the old mech out to confirm my suspicion that...yep...it was seized solid... Image After dumping that one I went to get the replacement out of the spares box...Ahhh...§§§§§§§§..... its a front wiper mech not a rear... how did I not notice that sooner?.... Never the less I carried on, I've managed to free one of these off before....I then spent the next ten minutes with a very large lump hammer, some WD40 and various other tools removing the shaft from the brace. I eventually got it out and cleaned it up, greased it and re fitted it. Once back in the car it functioned....sort of, apparently it's been seized for a long time and it's basically worn the ridges off one of the brackets in the linkage so it works, but it doesn't always park where it should. I've removed the wiper for now as I dont want it flopping around at the back looking stupid. After that fiasco I fitted the tailgate repair kit that I had bought, it went on but it just didn't really fit as well as the last one I got, not sure if it was the new clips (they seemed a bit 'chunky') or if it was the brackets?.. either way it's better than the two bloody wood screws for the time being.. Oh I bid on a set of Pegs on Ebay the other day, came so close..missed em by a tenner....Doh...oh well, the crumy Comets will have to stay on for now...

Cleaned the engine bay up a little today with some de-greaser, whoever sprayed that black oily §§§§ all over everything wants shooting, everything you touch is covered in it. I found a lead off the drivers side front wiper mech, plugged it in and the bloody washers came on and started squirting water out of a busted valve in the system...Wonder why it was disconnected?...I'll post pics tomorrow...

Post 601056 by Tomcat on 2013-04-27 21:39:20

Pics of said engine bay clean, sadly I got carried away and forgot to take any before pics, believe me it was filthy (not that it's that much better, lol). Still loads to do but at least it's looking a little tidier... Image Image

Post 602364 by Tomcat on 2013-05-03 15:07:09

Cheers Andy, it only looks it though, it's bloody filthy, someone's sprayed christ knows what over anything and everything electrical and it's black and oily. Spent a couple of hours this afternoon doing a few jobs, rear wiper now works again, sadly though the wash part of the wash wipe doesnt work, I've checked the pump and there's no noise coming from it at all so as it's definatley getting 12 volts I'd say it's dead. Pulled the drivers side headlight out while I was near the pump and while I had it off I pulled the lens off to see why they looked dark, still no idea however there's a lot of the silver paint missing off the reflector and what is there is not in good condition. Even after a good clean inside and out the light looks no different to the other one, time for new headlights I think. Oh I also noticed (while I had the headlight apart) that it's had HID's at some point and it's melted the reflector a little.Had another bash at the widows today, still sod all, tried replacing the other widow switches just in case one had a short but it had no effect at all. I also tried swapping the breaker over in the fuse box for the one for the drivers seat, sadly that did sod all as well. While I was playing with the relays in the fuse box I noticed that part of the fusebox looks a little melted, it's not hear any of the connections so it's not been caused by over heating electricals but it makes me wonder if there's something seriously wrong with the wiring in or around the fuse box?. Re adjusted the door catches as well today as one of the doors wasn't shutting flush, not a big job but it all add's up I suppose.

Post 602410 by Tomcat on 2013-05-03 17:02:37

Crap.... Just went outside for a mooch around the car (as you do) and noticed that when I re fitted the headlight the indicator wasn't sitting properly, dawned on me that the clips on the indicator need to slide into the headlight... Ok, remove indicator...Nope..its stuck....come on......Ahh....Fek.... Image Ah, so this is what standard of maintenance the car has had eh?, bloody hell what a joke that is.....Needed to try and find a temporary repair as I'm §§§§§§ed if I'm gluing it back on.. Image Image Found an old 960 indicator that I was going to sell...ah well tough poo.... Cut the mounting tags off it and plastic welded them onto the V70 one.. Image Image Doesnt look very pretty but it's a hell of a lot better than GLUE!!!..(FFS..), Once done it clicked into place nicely... I'd taken the other side off as a reference, put that back on an 'Snap'... one of the mounting lugs broke off....(FFS...)... Oh well its staying in place for now so sod it.... time to look for replacements...

After spending the past couple of days working on an Alfa Mito for a neighbour I finally found time to give the car a little wash today, still lots and lots and lots to do to it but at least it looks semi decent after a wash. I was hoping to get some paintwork done over the next few weeks but sadly my compressor has let go (spat oi into the air pipe while spraying the Alfa's bumper).. Image Image

Post 603823 by Tomcat on 2013-05-08 09:16:01

Had a little care package arrive yesterday from James (thanks bud) with some various odd's and sod's I was missing, I manged to fit a couple of the bits but I had problem with installing the 3 disc cd changer cartridge. After trying several times I just couldn't persuade it to go in, upon closer inspection I found that something had been shoved inside it!, after a little wrestling I managed to pull out a rather large bag of plastic scented beads...( I presume that this was inserted by a small child). Sadly even once I'd removed said item the cdchanger still refuses to work, think it may have broken or bent something inside, this means I now have yet another job to add to the list....FFS... Electric windows dont work (Various switchpacks tried with no success at all) Rear wiper doesnt work (Fixed...No Wash wipe yet though) Slight pull to the right (Fixed...Tyre pressures sorted...Duh) Steering wheel needs replacing (Bought and replaced) blocked cat Wheels BADLY need refurbing (Bought one Wheel which is being refurbed...4 more to go) Front and rear bumpers need re spraying, along with two splits to repair in the front bumper Both rear quarters need respraying Boot outer grab handle needs re spraying Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing. Post 603893 by Tomcat on 2013-05-08 18:57:41

Had a good day today, as some of you may know my compressor died the other day, a friend gave me a new but broken compressor yesterday (One of the air fittings had snapped off), when I checked it was exactly the same make and model as my old one so after a morning of swapping some parts around I have a brand new compressor!.. After such a success this morning I decided to have a look at the cabin filter as I'd noticed yesterday that there wasn't exactly a lot of air being blown through the heater even on full. To say it was filthy would be the understatement of the year, I don't think this thing has been changed in years!.. Image I've left it off for now and the fan's much more usefull now, though I will have to order a replacement for it. While I had the trim off under the windscreen I had a proper look at the fuse box to see if I could trace the window fault, sadly couldn't see anything wrong there. I then proceeded to remove the kick panel under the dash to examine the underside of the fusebox, still couldn't see anything wrong. I then decided that I'd checked everything else so I'd check the wiring multiplug on the door (as it was the only thing I hadn't checked)... This is what I found.. Image Don't know about you guys but to me that just doesnt look right. Upon closer inspection there was 6 wires that where obviously not making any sort of contact as they'd been pushed back into the plastic housing. I pulled a couple of the wires but there was no way of re inserting them and having them stay in place, as a temporary fix I've hot glues all the wires that where loose to the rest of the wires that are firmly seated. Lo and behold...I HAVE WORKING WINDOWS!!!!... BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.. Really made my day this did, the only minor problem I have now is that I'm now in the land of dubious switchpacks.. the one I have now is ok but it's not brilliant, time to start saving for a new one. On a side note, who was it that offered me a replacement drivers door in Silver?...(this one has a big dent at the bottom..and the knackered multiplug)

Post 603896 by nobananas on 2013-05-08 20:02:23

Looking good Tc, you're a braver man than I making a list ! Regarding your warped discs, just check to be sure that your wishbone inner bushes are okay. I chased a shudder under braking for ages on my T5, changed the front discs twice and the rears twice as well until I found out that the fault was the new wishbone bushes that I had fitted just a few months earlier ! (I'd ruled them out because they were new ffs ! ) Some poly bushes later and the shake had gone.

Post 603901 by Tomcat on 2013-05-08 20:10:19

Cheers NB, I have to make lists as I have a memory like a sieve, lol. As for the brakes I'm reasonably sure it's the discs as when your coming to a stop at even slow speeds you can feel the car braking in little lurches as it comes to a stop. Poly bushes will be getting fitted as soon as funds allow.

Post 604412 by Tomcat on 2013-05-10 17:00:27

Spent a couple of hours today getting another few jobs done, I didn't have long due to the weather but I decided to get something done during a break in the rain. I managed to get the rear blinds removed off the rear doors today, I had no need for them and didn't particularly like them so they're getting filed in the bin (unless someone wants them). I also noticed the other day that the front two tie down points were missing, it was only once I removed some of the boot floor that I realised they were not even bolted in. I forgot that Marc removed the rear brace when he sold me the car and that probably got in the way of the rear tie down points. Thankfully Marc had thrown them into one of the many spared boxes that he'd given me so they're now re attached. The floor mats are currently doing a couple of laps in the washing machine, juydging by the amount of soap suds coming out of the powder draw I put too much washing up liquid in with them (oops..) After a good luck at them the mats have never been out the car as the carpet underneath is immaculate, that said the drivers mat has a hole in in so I could probably do with another. I got excited today because I thought I'd found the cause of the central locking problem, I took the wiring multiplug off the passenger door and realised it too had about 6 wires missing....then I realised that as a PASSENGER door it wont have as much wiring going to it... :(

I know I've already posted this in a seperate thread but in the interests of keeping it all in the build thread:- OK. One wheel done, 4 to go. This one isn't perfect (as I haven't done the back yet) but it's 500% better than the ones on the car and how it was when I first got it (sorry Frankie, but it was rough).. No before photo as I forgot to take one (Just picture LOTS of kerbing and Lots of corrosion) During: Image Base coat: Image Laquer: Image Paint needs to set for the rest of the day so maybe later on today I can pull the masking tape off and tomorrow (Hopefully) fit it to the car. Lets hope the tyre that's on it stays inflated as I have a slow flat already on the car, it's taking about a day to go completley flat (and no, it's not worth getting it fixed)

Post 605036 by Tomcat on 2013-05-12 00:11:27

They'll be blanking plugs for the headlight wiper holes in the front bumper. I've removed them as they weren't working properly anyway.

Post 605039 by Biff on 2013-05-12 00:17:36

Ahhhh. Now I see! They do look cleaner without them. Mine don't work but regardless of that I've always wanted a car with headlight wipers. Lol

Post 605042 by Tomcat on 2013-05-12 00:25:45

Lol... I know what you mean, I'm not going to remove them because I may change my mind at some point. At least this way I can just remove them and re fit the blades.

Just caught up on your thread TC, nice work, will be a stunning car when you've finished, no doubt.

Post 605757 by Tomcat on 2013-05-14 11:47:32

Decided to put the freshly painted wheel on the car today, as the back tyres are good and the fronts are shagged I thought I'd put the new one on the back and swap on of the backs to the front (still with me?), all went well until I got to the front wheel, all the bolts where stuck solid, after bashing them all with a large lump hammer to try and break their death grip I managed to undo thee (including the locking nut...which thankfully wasnt tight) the other two snapped...FFFFFFFFFF...etc.. Thankfully I managed to twist out the broken bits and fit new bolts. The wheel I removed has sadly a big dent in the back edge..this could be why it's got a slow leak (not sure as it's not a massive dent)... Not sure what to do now, is it worth repainting it or should I just get a replacement wheel?... Pics to follow.. Anyone got two decent Comets (pref with tyres) that they wanna trade for a splitter?...

Well not done much this week...upto today, today I finally picked up the remaining plastic rivets for the bumper so tonight I've finally gotten around to removing the damn thing so I can repair it and repaint it (Sooo been wanting to do this since I got the car). Image A quick before shot showing some of the crap on the front of the bumper, apparently someone reversed into the front of it at some point, hence the big split in the front edge and the scuffed paint. Took me about 15 minutes to remove the bumper as someone had used the wrong rivets to attach the wheel arch liners (metal ones are sooo ugly), once I finally got it off and stripped it down I found this on the back of one of the corners... (I knew it was full of filler anyway) Image You can also see that the corner had split as at some point someones hit something really low and it stuffed all the bottom corner in. Image

Post 609455 by Tomcat on 2013-05-23 18:50:40

Gawd I'm knackered, had a really busy day today. As I was up early I pulled the front bumper off and prepped it for paint, didn't take too long as I'd already done most of the groundwork last week. After about an hours work I managed to get it basecoated and laquered. Just as I was finished that my care package from James arrived, a replacement rad, intercooler, fan and aircon rad, also a replacement MAF, the rest of the day has been taken up with swapping bits over, had a major problem swapping the rad as the two mounting bolts that hold it in place got so far and then the captive nuts started to spin, I really struggled to get anything on them, finally managed to get the passenger side to snap off, the drivers side I had to break the radiator bracket off to give me enough room get at the captive nut. While the rad's where out I gave the chassis a clean up and then moved the horns, they now live under the N/s front wing. Not had chance to try it yet but it certainly sounds a lot healthier, just got to wait until tomorrow now to refit the front bumper as the paints still soft.
those rads are an §§§§ to get out
You can bloody say that again!. I had to take the fan off and then split the aircon from the rest before I could find enough room to wiggle them out the engine bay, glad I had the bumper off already would have been a pig of a job otherwise. Those captive nuts where just a nightmare though, with such limited access you've got sod all chance of getting them off.

Thanks Pete, ignore the pm I've just sent then as I hadn't read this last night,lol.. Bumper is now done and back on the car!!, I've still to get a new reg plate (old one looks scruffy). While getting stuff done yesterday I decided that as one of them wasnt working I was going to ditch the headlight wipers all together so I've pulled the motors, I've already made some blanks for the bumper so I'll try and get these painted today while I do the fibreglassing on the splitters. Car sounds really good now, lets hope it drives that way and that nothing falls off when I go out in it.

Post 610132 by Tomcat on 2013-05-25 19:54:29

As the cars now running like it should I've started to get a few more costmetic jobs out the of the way. Managed to get the front bumper wiper blanks painted and then fitted today, these turned out ok. I've also given in and painted the front grill, I've never been a fan of the all silver grills on Volvo's, I wanted to remove the slash off the grill but couldn't get the damn clips on the back of it to move at all, so I've masked it up and just sprayed around it, scuffed up the plastic, wiped with pre paint and then painted with black etch primer and finally some satin black, looks a lot nicer and now I've also fitted the two grills Pete sent me (ta bud) the front actualy looks quite decent. Still got to make myself a front splitter as I've started it but I was too tired to finish the laminating last night, may get it done in a couple of weeks.. Front with bumper (now painted) and lower grills replaced.. Image Wiper blanks.. Image Front grill after painting. When I was looking at getting a V70 I was quite tempted to get a Cross country front and rear bumper just for a different look (cross country front bumper with R splitter ?!), may still get a rear one for the 850 but not sure how it would look as the lines are a little different.

Post 620019 by Tomcat on 2013-06-26 00:05:31

Because of all the problems of late I've had no time or inclination to do anything on the car. The rear bumper still needs painting and recently it's started to run a bit rough again and use plenty of fuel again, I'm thinking though that its probably the O2 sensor getting crapped up with all the oil blowing through the exhaust. Hoping to try and get the handbrake sorted over the next few days as it's crap, have to leave the car in gear otherwise it rolls, not sure if it's a cable it needs or if its just shoes, I'll pull the rear discs when I get a minute and check. The last few times I've had the car on a bit of a drive (ie. motorways), when I've come to slow down and change gear I've noticed that the first press of the clutch is really heavy, after that it's ok. any ideas?..

Post 620194 by Tomcat on 2013-06-26 20:00:40

Noticed that in the past week or so the cars lost it's oomph again and started stinking of petrol. Would I be right in presuming that as the seals are leaking on the turbo (if in fact that's what it is) and there's a constant flow of oil vapour through the exhaust that it would clog up the O2 sensor?. If it is then is there going to be a way of stopping this until I can afford to get the seals done on the turbo?.

Post 621123 by Tomcat on 2013-06-29 19:53:33

This is the result of the blowout (not sure it actualy was a blow out looking at it) I had coming off the motorway the other day. Image I checked the spare rim I had taken off to put this one on and after doing a leak test I found air coming out of the valve and the area where the dent is on the back edge of the wheel, after a teeny bit of oil in the valve and a quick whack with the lump hammer both where looking a lot better. I then repeated the leak test again, left it a little longer and discovered that there's leaks in at least 4 places around the edge of the rim, I can only conclude that it's corrosion on the mating faces, looks like it'll have to wait until next week.

Well a small job has turned into several larger jobs. I decided today to clean up the leather again, that took all of half an hour. While cleaning that I got really annoyed at the gearstick lock that's been fitted to the car at some point and decided that as I dont use it that had to go. To work out how it was bolted on I had to remove the rear part of the centre console, this was already in quite a state so I was pleased to be removing it so I could fix it up. Upon getting it out I realised that the bolts holding it in place must be in the tunnel...where the exhaust is (behind the bloody shielding), so sod that, I'll break the grinder out and chop it off. To facilitate that I removed the passenger seat, and the passenger carpet...to discover......a wet floor......FEK..... So now I have to repair the centre console, remove the stupid gearlock I wanted to remove in the first place and also I now have to replace the heter matrix (thankfully I think I have a spare in the shed)....I did think the windscreen was misting up a little the other night when I put it on hot.... Keep your fingers crossed for me....I'm going in...

Post 632191 by V70 Graham on 2013-08-03 15:48:51

Do you ever wish you'd not started in the first place lol Though to be fair if the matrix has gone it would need doing at some point.

Post 632215 by MIKESC70T5 on 2013-08-03 18:04:55

I thought your entire brake system was completely shagged to. Turning into a right money pit for you. I agree with Pete, might of been better to save up and buy a decent one in the first place if you need it as a safe daily for the family.

Post 632238 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 19:22:42

Thanksfully today's liitle trip into the land of "Fek it's borked" didn't cost me anything, I had antifreeze already in, I had a spare heater matrix and I had a spare day, all done...suprisingly no drama. The matrix took about an hour to replace at it came out very, very easily. I've also managed to remove the gearstick lock, wasnt too bad but the nuts used inside the car where some sort of wierd sort that had a revolving outer rim that made them impossible to remove - unless of course you have a grinder, this made very short work of them. The centre console has been repaired where I could but really it needs replacing, it's really rather tatty and also now has a nice 4 inch long slit down the passenger side where the gearstick lock used to live. To be honest guys so far it doesnt owe me that much, granted some of the repairs have come via generous parts donations off forum members but on the whole it wasn't too bad mechanicaly to start off with. The brakes are ok (just ok), they're not brilliant but they work fine at normal road speeds, being as I dont plan on driving like a lunatic any time soon they'll be ok until I replace them next month. Did check today while it was jacked up and the fuel filter needs replacing too, it looks original...so very, very, rusty. As far as it turning into a money pit.... I kinda knew what I was getting into and at the time it was all I could afford, if I had more money at the time then I too would have bought something different, probably another T5-R if I'm honest. I do like this car it's just that it's a long term project, which kinda suits me as I've always got something to do on it if I get bored. Speaking of which, after all that drama I thought "Sod it" and whipped the cone filter off for a clean, it's been looking very grubby since I got the car but I hadnt gotten around to cleaning it. I gave it a good shot of K&N airfilter cleaner and left it to soak in for ten minutes, after which I rinsed it out (from the inside obviously), I was rather shocked by the crap that came out of it.. Here it is before cleaning: Image Ewwww..Very,very dirty water... Image So much so I gave it another squirt with the cleaner and left it again, after another ten minutes and anther rinse.. Second rinse through... Image It's now soaking for a third and final time, then I'll rinse it and let it dry over night before re oiling in the morning.... I dread re oiling because I know if I put too much on it just means death for the MAF..

Thought my filters were dirty until I saw that post. You should notice an improvement on mpg.

Post 632246 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 19:43:33

Well that'll be good then, it's doing pretty well now, current average is just under 26mpg but that's with me giving the occasional boot full, started to just stick the cruise on and plod to work at around 55-60. I had no idea the filter was this dirty otherwise I would have cleaned it much sooner.

No it's got to dry first Mark, just need to go rinse it again as I put more clener on it again. I'll leave it over night to dry and then re oil it.

I gave mine a gentle spraying allround so you could see a colour change, and so far, no problems.

Post 632256 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 20:01:46

Yes I am. The whole point of the oil is that it helps to trap the smaller particles of dust in the filter, thats why the tell you to rinse them from the inside out, otherise the water pushes the particles further into the filter. I think the problems come from over oiling filters, my oil isnt spray stuff it comes in a bottle, so umm god knows how I'm gonna do this as I need to put a small bead on the edge of every fold... That's gonna take a hell of a long time to do.. Wonder if I can find a spray bottle and pour the oil into it?

I'd give you my bottle to use if I was nearer to you as another one could over apply.

Post 632302 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 22:10:25

Well it's dry now (surprisingly) so it's been re oiled, here is the result... Image It's still got a few discoloured patches but it's clean now at least, here's hoping the MAF doesnt object to this, after letting the oil soak in I gave the filter a pat down with some kitchen roll to remove any excess oil.

Post 632306 by graemewelch on 2013-08-03 22:21:37

Post 632309 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 22:25:30

Post 632321 by Tomcat on 2013-08-03 22:42:00

Yeah I know, I tried putting some of the oil into a hand spray bottle but although it did come out it just came out in a bloody straight line, lol. Put it back in the original bottle and just trickled it onto the edge of each fold, then wiped off the excess.. I've only once had problems afterwards and then someone told me it's possible to clean the residue off the MAF if it becomes contaminted but I cant remember what with...

If it was me, I think I'd prioritise getting the tyres and brakes sorted ASAP. Didn't you say the brakes are only good for gentle driving, anything more and there useless? Inefficient brakes and poor tyres sounds like a recipe for disaster, hate for you to have an accident and damage your car or worse someone else's.

Post 632406 by Tomcat on 2013-08-04 13:18:13

No the brakes are ok, I only said they where ok fot normal driving because after a rather spirited drive the other day at the Demon Tweeks meet I had rather squeely brakes afterwards. Believe me if they where that bad then I wouldnt even be driving it. The tyres are fine, I just need the two off side ones re seating as they have slight leaks on the rim.

Finally got around to finishing the front splitter I started making for my own car!, this is the first one I've ever made for myself.. Basically I'm lazy and if it wasn't something that was making me money then it didnt get done,lol.. This time however I want to get the front of the car looking good so as I already have the stuff in I may as well make one. Also making myself a pair of headlight eyebrows, think they really suit the V70, normally I would just buy a pair but I have no spare money at the minute so as I have the materials I may as well just make some,lol.. Here's hoping the turn out ok. Pics to follow...

Post 634233 by Tomcat on 2013-08-10 19:21:45

Had quite a busy day today, I decided to get a couple of jobs out of the way and things sort of snowballed. I started off removing the windscreen wiper arms to repaint them, they'd gotten quite badly stone chipped (how the hell does that happen anyway?), while they where off I noticed that for some strange reason one of the wipers was a lot smaller than it should be, this has now been replaced with a handy spare one I had lying around. I then decided to finally fit the replacement rear window washer pump I've had lying around for months, this went a lot smoother than I though it would and I now have a working rear wash wipe. I've removed the stickers for the gearstick lock as I hate having pointless stickers in the windows (also the windows are getting tinted at some point anyway). After all this I decided that the engine bay was looking very sorry for itself.. Before: Image As you can see the engine has lots of that orrible engine laquer on it (curse the guy/woman that invented that crap), took ages to scrape it all off, I then gave the head a bit of a clean up along with the fuel rail and a few other bits and pieces and I then decided to paint the cam cover and the inlet manifold. After: Image Not the best job I've ever done but certainly an improvement on what it was, to do much more I'm going to have to strip things down and I really wasnt in the mood for that today. Once all this was complete I decided I would finally fit one of my own splitters to the front of the car, this is actualy the first one I've ever put on any of my cars, not out of not wanting to, purely because I'm a lazy bugger and couldn't be bothered making one before,lol.. I have a feeling that after repairing the bumper it's now a slightly different shape as it was a pig to fit and I'm not overly happy with how far back the front edge is, given more time I'd have hacked it up and remade it fit better. Image Finished it all off with a wash, now knackered and going in search of alcohol.

Looking good, the work you've done to the engine bay, even if your not happy with it has made it look a lot cleaner/tidier just like the way a low mileage bay would look, job well done. Splitter finishes it off at the front but then I've always loved the TC splitter :)

Post 635550 by Tomcat on 2013-08-15 00:59:25

Thanks Andy, still tons to do yet but it's slowly coming together. No idea why I've never put a splitter on one of my cars before, glad I put one on this as it ad's a lot to the look of the front end. Should have some eyebrows for it in the next day or so, they're just being finished now so as soon as I have them painted I'll get em on. Also got an eggcrate grill coming next week as well, didn't cost very much, just hope it's as good as it looks in the pics.

Added another new piece the other day, nothing amazing, just an egg crate grill that I managed to pick up reasonably cheap off Ebay, undecided on painting it or not yet. Appologies for the poor photo, it was getting a little dark when I took it. Image A few weeks ago I was filling up the car at the petrol station and noticed something rattling around in the very top part of the rear lights, that weekend I pulled both lights off and fished these out: Image I'm presuming that they're a strobe bulb?.. they where obviously fitted by one of the previous owners but I dont know why, does anyone know the history on this car?.

Post 641612 by Tomcat on 2013-09-05 14:20:09

After doing some investigating on the forum today I've worked out that one of the previous owners refurbed the turbo, I have no idea how good the refurb was but the car's still producing blue smoke. Going to get a compression test done before I buy anything, make sure it's not the rings, failing that it's another rebuild or the stem seals.

Well being as I don't have much else I can do I've finally decided to start airbrushing the engine covers, I've got the sparkplug cover off and prep'd so far. Well being as I've finally found a little bit of time where I wont need the car for a couple of days I've decided to repaint the wheels, sadly it's not going to be a full on strip down refurb as I dont have time for that, just going to clean up and repaint the outer faces. Before I started on them they where badly kerbed, chipped, the top coat of powder coating was peeling off in large chunks due to it not bonding properly and they just looked a site. Spent most of yesterday cleaning up the two nearside wheels and then painting them. Got them back on the car today and now I'm on with the two offside wheels, they're currently in primer but I hope to get them done by the end of today. Here's a couple of photos of yesterdays wheels. Image Image Image I know the backs of the wheels are going to be rougher than rough now as i didnt mask them off, they'll get done at some point when I have a little more free time. Not quite sure what colour this is, I kinda made it out of some spare paint I had lying around, it sorta looks like Anthracite, I think they could do with being a little darker but they'll do for now as they're definatley an improvement on how they where before.

Post 643891 by Tomcat on 2013-09-13 19:41:54

The other two are nearly done, just drying. Hopefully I can get them dry enough to put back on so I can go the bloody shop,lol.. Image Primed, sanded etc... Image Another one done, just waiting for the lacquer to harden a little more (Should really of left the centre cap off...)

Post 643893 by Tomcat on 2013-09-13 19:43:56

Just ordered the bits I need to sort the projector headlights out that I bought, I'll post some pics up of the strip down and re paint in case anyones interested.

A care package arrive the other day from PartForVolvo's, going to be the weekend now before I get chance to do anything with it but it's here anyway. Just need to sort the order out for the brakes now...

Post 645516 by Tomcat on 2013-09-20 14:16:06

Rest of the stuff has arrived today, hoping to get the headlights painted and converted tomorrow. I have a couple of HID kits that came with the car but I dont know if either of them works, if not then I'll just get some decent normal bulbs for now.

Post 645534 by iancho on 2013-09-20 16:17:08

I'm waiting with baited breath! :)

Post 645537 by partsforvolvos.com on 2013-09-20 16:42:33

the fixing clips for the insert on those projector lights is quite brittle. i have had them apart a few times, piece of cake job.

Post 645559 by Tomcat on 2013-09-20 18:24:18

I've got one apart already, ££££ myself when taking it apart as I'm a bugger for accidentaly breaking delicate stuff. Now I have one apart though I know how they come apart and doing the other should be a piece of cake. On the down side I'm replacing the side lights with LED strips, I ordered them ages ago and they sent the wrong ones. The right ones came today, then it dawned on me that I hadnt actualy ordered enough, I only ordered two and as they need doubling up I need another two so I've ordered them again today. Because of this I wont be able to get my headlights done this weekend after all, I may do the paintwork but that'll be it.

Post 645805 by Tomcat on 2013-09-21 19:00:18

Busy afternoon today, my injectors came from Martin so I decided to fit them and also the new fuel filter from PartsForVolvo's, I also decided to paint the bezel on the one headlight I had stripped so I'd be ready by the time I eventually had all the bloody parts,lol.. In the middle of swapping injectors over, I also cleaned up the fuel rail as it was bloody manky before and I hate putting things back dirty when it only takes a few minutes to clean them up. Image Old and New... Fairly certain that this things not been changed for a good long time... Image Headlight bezels... Before.. Image Primed in Acid etch black. Image Painted Satin black.. Image Got new lenses and seals and also LED side lights (eventually) still to add.

Ok, so the day has finally come.....Headlight day!!!!... Yes the long awaited second set of LED's came this morning. After repainting the other headlight, then fitting the LED's and wiring them in, refitting the plastic lenses, fitting new seals, new glass etc they where ready for fitting... Before: Image After: Image Image Image With LED's (side lights on)... Image Had a few minor hiccups, namely that the inserts for the screws on the passenger headlight started to come out when I tighten up the bolts, that the headlight bulb on the same headlight was popped and I hand't noticed and that when I first switched them on the LED's were not working. Thankfully most of that was simple to fix, the LED's I'd just wired in the wrong way around (the wiring on the LED'd is crap to say the least), after reversing both sides they both work perfectly. Now looking forward to having better lights at night.. Just hope I dont blind anyone as I've not had the chance to check the alignment yet as it's still light out. Better bulbs will get fitted at some point, at the moment I'm just glad to have headlights that look and function better than the old ones. Oh and as a side note.. I wasn't overly impressed with the way the indicator units fitted, they refused to line up with the mounting holes (even with the headlights left loose for wiggle room)..

Post 646633 by partsforvolvos.com on 2013-09-24 16:30:21

some people use a sharp knife to trim off the little spacing tags on the indicators to let them sit closer to the headlights if they find fitment is tight. looks nice, like the led's so much better than when i saw it.

Post 646634 by Tomcat on 2013-09-24 16:32:09

Ahhh, lol, yes it was those spacers that caused the problem. I managed to wiggle them in in the end but I was worried about breaking off one or both the mounting tabs in the process. Still they're on now... and thanks, it was a bit rough when I first bought it.

Finally got time today to check the compression on the engine. I checked it cold and hot and there's very little difference, book says it should be between 11-13bar mine where all around 12, very little in them all maybe.2 of a bar something like that, but that could be just down to not cranking for the same amount of time on each one. Soooo it's gotta be either stem seals or the turbo. As I now have a rebuild kit for the turbo that's my next move, I'm off around the 21st for a week so that'll be when I attempt it.

Post 650354 by Tomcat on 2013-10-06 16:08:34

As I had to take the sparkplug cover off today to do the compression test I finally decided to cut and polish the cover, looks loads better now.. Image Speaking of sparkplugs though I had a look at the colour of the plugs when I took them out for testing and they all look a little er...white/pale.. I thought they where supposed to be a nice browny colour?... Is it running weak? Appologies for the pic being blurred, the sun was shining and I couldnt see the screen to see if it was in focus or not. You can sort of get the picture though?.. Image

No, white is fine, back when I started driving.you could tell your car was running well if the inside of the exhaust was white.

Sorry for those that dont like it but it's still getting done, I've always felt the back end of the volvo's is a weak styling area. The front looks very aggresive but the back could be any old V70, if it's good enough for the likes of the AMG Merc's then it's good enough for the back of my car.

Post 666018 by M-R-P on 2013-12-04 15:23:55

Fair play mate. It's not about what makes everybody else happy, styling is a personal thing. I'm sure, once it's done, it'll look great. Especially with your skills. At the Ace Cafe last weekend, two guys were stood looking at the front of mine for a while before one said "looks aggressive". Made my day :)

Post 669390 by Tomcat on 2013-12-14 16:27:14

The car got a small prezzie today, I finally managed to get hold of the trim piece that goes around the rear tailgate inner handle, it's been missing since I repaired the tailgate trim all those months ago, I had to get it from Volvo in the end, cost me a massive £11 but I think even I can manage that, lol. Stuff to come in the coming month, replace a couple of tyres, try and sort the central locking, look in the rear boot floor to see if they're filling up with water.. (cd player misteriously stopped working the other day and all the rear windows are steaming up) and maybe get around to trying the HID kits that came with the car.

Post 669399 by Biff on 2013-12-14 16:46:03

I've got an alpine changer minus the mag if it's any good to you mate? I think the bumper will look ok if it's pulled off properly. Getting the exhaust to sit nice would be my concern. Wish my car had come up so well so quickly. It's not a race, it's a marathon. Lol

Post 669400 by Tomcat on 2013-12-14 16:51:24

Thanks Biff, I'll bear it in mind once I've had a look at it, not sure what's wrong yet, it's played up before and when removed the cartridge and re inserted it it worked fine afterwards. As for the rest of the car, the bodywork looks pretty nice now (though it's no where near perfect yet) but the mechanical side of it is still crap. Hopefully in the new year I will be able to afford the other bits and pieces it needs doing, the only reason it's come up so well is the paint and bodywork side I can do for myself.

Post 669411 by Biff on 2013-12-14 17:03:31

Mine still needs a few hundred quid in bits & then I'll concentrate on the interior & cosmetics side. I can't wait to get it somewhere near now mate & get out & about in it properly. I'll have to pop up for a splitter & some pictures. The changers here if you want it mate, it's been in my boot since I bought the car with the volvo stereo in.

Post 670792 by Tomcat on 2013-12-18 00:26:43

Managed to get the cd changer working again today, unplugged/plugged the lead at the changer end, tried it... nothing. Unplugged/plugged the lead at the head unit end, nothing. Ejected the cd cartridge.. and working... Despite the fact that I'd previsouly ejected the cartridge a few times and it had done sod all this time it worked. Can only presume it was a dodgy connection. While I was looking at the car I realised the service light bulb has either been removed or has blown, as I cant get the service light reset any more because someone borrowed my reset tool and never returned it I'll leave it as is for now. I also found that the drivers seat was a bit 'wobbly' in the left hand lower corner, after rumedging around I found a loose bolt in the bottom corner of the seat back, it's slightly better now but there's still something a little loose somewhere.

Not updated for ages as there's been sod all to show (due to a complete lack of funds). Car has been running faultlessly with the exception of the central locking in the rear doors has started to get a bit slow. Today, I've been and picked up a new set of wheels (new to me anyway), these are going to get stripped, repainted etc in the coming weeks.. Image Also finished making an new splittter shape for the V70's as apparently the last one didn't fit too well.. Image Rear diffuser is coming along (albeit slowly), it will still need some major mods yet but this is where it's at.. Image

Nothing really new to report as I've been busy with other stuff, only recently managed to get the wheels stripped and started to get them painted.. Image Had to paint these twice, the first time was with a Vaxhaull shade of anthracite, this was basically sparkly brown so that got binned and I made some up myself from some left over paint. Got two centres done, just got the other two to flat and paint and the outers to clean up.

Post 705872 by Tomcat on 2014-04-23 19:14:49

Thanks Andy.. I've just had a read back through and apparently I missed a rather crucial update a good while back... Car now has a fully rebuilt turbo on it. After buying a kit off Ebay so I could fit new seals and bearings to the turbo to stop it smoking I eventually realised that the shaft on the turbo was knackered, it was sent off to a specialist who sourced a good second hand shaft, fitted the new bearings and seals and also balanced it for a very cheap price. Image Dissasembled. Image Stripped. Image Worn Shaft. Image Rebuilt and balanced core Hopefully this isnt a repost as I only looked back as far as September last year, I think it got fixed after that,lol..

Post 705877 by Tomcat on 2014-04-23 19:20:46

Ooops.. Missed this as well... Back in January.. Finally!!!!.. On Thursday I managed to get all my rear brakes replaced, new discs, pads, handbrake shoes, new fitting kit for the shoes, new handbrake cables. Took most of the morning as it was peeing down on and off (including hail at one point), I had to cut the old cables off with a grinder as they just wouldnt budge due to being completely worn through and siezed. Discs had seen much better days, they where badly scored and pitted, all nice and shiny and new now.. Forgot to take any after pics ( I know.. the best bit).. but here's some before pics.. Image Box of Goodies. Image uugh.. Slightly worn then.. Image Yup that's had it too.. Image In bits.. All sorted now and back together.

Wheels are now finished and back together again, sadly I have one wheel that has four bolts that wont tighten up and another that just has the one. All bolts have thread lock on them to stop the unfastening, the five that wont fighten up at all I'm going to try some PTFE tape on them to get them to grip, as long as they tighten up a bit I'll be happy, at the moment all five are just loose and spinning. Post 710494 by Tomcat on 2014-05-10 13:04:42

It's been a busy couple of weeks with the car recently, got a few jobs done and some tidying up. I'm still working on getting rid of the intermitant ABS light and also getting the handbrake to actualy work properly (even though it's almost all new parts). Last weekend I swapped out the rear ABS sensors as they where coming up as faulty/intermitant, this was a complete pig of a job as it requires the fuel tank to be moved out of the way to get the wires past it, I also replaced the short length of fuel pipe from the tank to the filter which had been bodged when I bought the car. The fuel pipe was relatively easy to swap out as it was just a push fit at both ends, the abs sensors where a bloody nightmare though as the actual sensors where seizes in on both hubs, nothing some brute force and ignorance with a hammer couldnt rectify though. The old (Bodged) fuel pipe and battered ABS sensors Image Brakes after painting, I used silver as it was the only colour I had handy, glad I did though as it seems to go well with the wheels. Image Image Image Also got around to fitting the rear lights I bought off Dan, had a few problems with these as one of them arrives broken, managed to repair it though and thankfully it's not visible unless you open the boot. Could do with getting hold of a replacement upper left hand rear light though if anyone knows of any?. Image And a quick one of the car at one of the recent shows, now with a splitter finally fitted too. Image Still lots to do, I'm hoping to try and get some of the remaining little faults sorted over the coming weeks, the handbrake I now have an idea on, the abs I will have to try and work out why its still logging the rear sensors as faulty and the minor smoking issue I'm gonna check the PCV replacement to make sure it's been done properly.

Well today is suspension swap day, rear nivo's are being swapped out in favour of Bilsteins and replacement springs. Started well already, managed to snap on of the bolts holding the top mounts in the captive nut, got around that managed to fit the replacement top mount. Moved onto the spring, bottom nut that holds the spring in place is just turning the whole bolt in the retainer, cant get anything in there to secure it, cant even weld it in place as I'd run out of welding wire previously and didnt realise.. Hmmph.... Thought about digging the grinder out and chopping the bottom retaining nut off, just checked though and the new retainers dont come with any nuts.. Think I should never have started this...
Looking very nice mate, great work and results.
Thanks bud.. looks a hell of a lot better now doesn't it?.. Well I won!.. I manged to get the otherside done fairly painlessly, then went back to the drivers side. No matter what I tried the spring retainer bolt wouldnt come undone. In the end I cut the spring to pieces with my grinder and then ground the back off the captive bolt so I could pull it through what was left. New stuff went back on without a hitch (though I did have to find new nuts for them as there was none supplied). Pics to follow..

Image Image The offending spring retainer and whats left of the o/s spring Image Oh after being so successfull with the suspension I had a go at fixing the ABS/TRACS Ecu, surprisingly it went without a hitch!.. Cut the lid off, resoldered and reattached in well under an hour. So far the lights are off.. lets see if this has finally seen the back of it..

Rear bumper build is coming along nicely. The diffuser part is pretty much done now and ready for moulding, bumper itself should be ready in a couple of days. Image

Post 717650 by Tomcat on 2014-06-08 22:13:05

Mould for the diffuser is done, as is the first part. Pulled this from the mould this evening. Just got to get the bumper mould sorted now and then it's all steam ahead. Image

Nice work with the suspension, was the ecu difficult to do I'm guessing you were methodical and the repair went as per online guides?
Nice work with the suspension, was the ecu difficult to do I'm guessing you were methodical and the repair went as per online guides?
TBH it was a doddle, in the past I've tried to remove the lid by prying it out of it's slot but this time I just took a hacksaw blade and gently cut it off all the way around, made it a much easier task. The soldering was childs play, I used to be a TV engineer so soldering is second nature to me, following one of the guides to work out what needed soldering it only took about 20 mins from start to finish, and that includes reattaching the lid and bolting it back on.

Some people just don't seem to be able to imagine what the final painted look will be like, and to be honest that angle the photo is taken at doesn't do it any favors, if the car was at the correct height and the picture was taken at eye level it would look completely different.

Gotten a few jobs done recently.. Recovered the drivers seat with the covers off the 99 year car, would have just put the seat straight in but the airbags are different. The last couple of days I've swapped the drivers door over and the sill cover, the old door had a nasty dent at the bottom that had pushed the skin down and it had scratched the sill cover. Swapped the door handle over to keep the same lock, all nice and straight again now.

I knew from the outset that some wouldn't like it, I didn't build it for them I built it mainly because it's what I wanted for my car. I've never been the shy retiring sort as far as my cars go, no point holding back now is there?.. There will be a few more mods yet but not many, maybe some better side skirts and some sort of upgraded rear spoiler, after that it's down to interior and the engine I think.

Well after a bit more faffing around today it's pretty much done. The fit near the wheel arches isn't what I wanted it to be but I could cure that by continual arsing around with the mounting bracket, I just cant be bothered a the moment, I'll save that for when I have a bit more time on my hands. Post 738734 by Tomcat on 2014-10-01 23:35:07

No real news but the cars been merrily munching away at the miles lately, with the exception of a few minor problems it's been plain sailing. Last week the tint on both front windows decided to start to peel at the bottom edges, it's only a very light tint (stops it having the van look) but as it's still under warranty they've kindly agreed to come out and replace it for me. Around a week earlier I started to notice a rubbing type noise that was coming from what seemed like the N/S front, as I've not been too well recently I took it into the indy round the corner that I know really well and asked them to have a quick look ( I was also having some steering problems too). They told me to bring it in and then stuck it up on the ramps, after five minutes he brought it back and told me they couldnt find anything wrong, as I know my car quite well I wasn't really impressed by this and I felt fobbed off so I thought I'd have a look myself instead. When I eventually got around to crawling under it recently I found that the O/s inner cv boot was ripped and the two inner track control arm bushes are worn and allowing the arm to move around a little, why they couldnt have told me this the other day I dont know, I was more than willing to pay them for their time. The rubbing noise I think I've eventually figured out is the handbrake cable on the N/s rubbing against the back of the wheel, these cables came with no clips to allow you to rivet them to the trailing arm so I had to make do and use cable ties, these sadly weren't upto the job. Today I've ordered some replacements from FRF, rather dear at nigh on £60 a side but more than worth it if they fit and actually allow the handbrake to work again. As lots of you will know the cars had a smoking problem since I got it, I've now got a replacement head waiting to go on, along with new timing belt, I just need to gather a few more gaskettes and some head bolts before I attempt the swap. While I was on the phone to FRF today I ordered the special sealant for the cam cover.. Crap that stuff aint cheap is it?.. £35 a bottle!!.. Hope to get the head done towards the end of October when I get a week off Uni.

Well today for the first time since I bought the car I now finally have a fully functioning handbrake. The previous cables where removed today and replaced with genuine ones from FRF, these actually fitted how they where supposed to and worked first time.

Post 759581 by Tomcat on 2015-02-12 16:06:25

Finally an update!! Not had anything to really write about for a long time now as I've just been driving it. The car has had other ideas though and as the MOT was up at the end of January I decided to buy another car to run around in while I took the V70 off the road for some long awaited maintentance. As the run around has turned out to be a bit of a pig in a poke I was unsure about starting work but as the MOT had expired anyway I decided to strip the car down today, all went pretty well with the exception of finding two sparkplugs lose, breaking two and also finding that the inlet manifold was lose as well (after a previous owner fitted a PCV kit) I only started around 10-11 oclock but I've managed to get it stripped right back and its currently just needing the turbo and downpipe removing before the head can be taken off. Image Image Image New heads recon'd and painted, head gasket set and new bolts are ordered and on their way. More to come tomorrow.

Post 759735 by Tomcat on 2015-02-14 17:56:53

More progress on the R today, got the inlet manifold cleaned up and painted, also managed to finaly get the head off as well. Sadly the head decided to put up a fight though as some ham fisted idiot had obviously over tightened the head bolts last time, got 11 out of twelve bolts out without a problem but one decided to snap. Now got to work out how to get the remains out of the block :( Image Actually broke the socket trying to undo the bolts they where that tight!. Image Cleaned up the inlet manifold (it was horrible before) Image Image Image The remains of the head bolt have snapped off clean with the block so I'm going to try drilling it and using an easy out to undo it, hopefully its not too tight.

Thats a bummer TC, always hate it when that happens. On the upside the manifold look great!

2 of the head bolts on my T5 snapped during removal....are they on the exhaust side? Might be just due to the heat they've been subject to over the years No easy solution mine were drilled out also (work by Shem)

This may mean new block time as I cant see an easy way of getting this sorted. I've just emailed a local spark errosion place to see if its something they could do, just waiting on a reply.

Cant even see it bud, the whole lot is a good 5 or 6 cm's down inside the block. I'm just going to leave it for now and get back to it when I have more time/money. I dont think it's going to be fixable as that bolt is in there really tight (hence why it snapped), think the best way forward is to just replace the bottom end.

££££! Bad times Craig! :( Was it the extraction guy. Or did you have a go yourself?

Post 761546 by Tomcat on 2015-03-01 18:28:44

Weird, thought I'd updated this thread recently. I've now managed to purchase a complete engine to replace the now defunct one in my R, there's no point trying to get this stud out, it's too far down inside the block and with the extractor now stuck in it as well there's bugger all chance. The last few days have been spent removing stuff and getting it ready for the new engine, with the help of Mr Sideways today we've managed to get everything removed (driveshafts as well) and get the subframe almost on the floor. This car seems to have a large appetite for tools, todate it's broken two breaker bars, a torq wrench and now a teng ratchet. All of them where broken (bar the ratchet) trying to undo the drive shaft nuts, these buggers where on mega tight. The driverside one we've had to leave attached to the hub and just removed the strut and driveshaft as one. The only thing stopping me from removing the engine totaly now is the fluid line going to the clutch internal slave, I cannot for the life of me see how it's attached. Image Image Image Image

Not managed to get my crane in any of the shots then?! After lumping that thing into my boot, I'd have thought it at least deserves to be in shot! That thing weighs more than your engine!! I have pics myself, of Craig looking mightily fed up with all this, but I won't put them up. (Only because Photobucket won't work on my phone! ;))

Post 762043 by Tomcat on 2015-03-04 10:57:41

Well, engines out and now sat on the floor outside (in the rain) with no head on it. As it's now effectively only usefull as a boat anchor there didn't seem any point in taking it inside. Gearbox is now in the garage being cleaned up (it was absolutely filthy), once it's clean I'm not sure what to do with it, I'd like to check the diff bearings but I'm terrified of opening up the gearbox lol. I may just take it to a gearbox centre and ask them to give it a once over for me. Before Image During Image

Post 762048 by MoleT-5R on 2015-03-04 11:49:37

It's surprisingly easy to open up the gearbox, but you will then have to sealant it back together afterwards, there's a thread on vs re a quaife install that shows how to open up the box, but you just want to check play in the diff bearings opening it up may not help much as there tappered, you'll be better off just popping the shafts back in and checking for play or as you say take it to a gearbox guy for complete peace of mind

Post 762051 by Tomcat on 2015-03-04 11:56:57

Yeah I think I'll take it in somewhere as I want to get rid of this horrible noise. Not really sure if it's gearbox, diff, clutch or drive shafts tbh.. I know it didn't really get any worse over the 8 or 9 months I heard it for but it is annoying.

Post 765597 by Tomcat on 2015-03-27 22:18:43

Well the old engine is now in a pile of pieces, and the NEW engine has arrived.. I say new like that because it looks anything but new, apparently it's had wildlife living on it for a while and they weren't toilet trained. After removing the old engine I was trying to decide what I should do about the weird noise I've been experiencing that could have been gearbox, flywheel or clutch related. After removing the old flywheel today and watching a few video's about them on youtube I'm thinking it could actually be the DMF that's been the cause of the odd noise. The sprung face of the flywheel can be moved around very easily, need to double check tomorrow if there's any rattle to it as that would definitley indicate a knackered flywheel. If this is in fact the cause then I will be trying to pick up a single mass flywheel off an 850 and also an 850R clutch, I'm not going to risk fitting another second hand DMF that may only last another few thousand miles before failing as well. New engine has been stripped down a little so I could clean up the block and throw some paint on it, there was no way I could stick it in the car looking like it did even if it is a freshly rebuilt motor. It has now been mostly painted silver and the head has been painted crackle black. hopefully in the coming weeks I can see about getting it fitted (provided I can spare the time away from my studies to get it done that is) Image Engine As it arrived (well bare a few bits that have been removed) Image Image Stripped and Painted.

Not got around to the water yet as the weathers been pants anyway. I did however manage to have a second look at the DMF today and upon closer inspection it looks fine, there's minimal movement in the springs and no movement at all in the centre bearing. Not really sure where to go with this now as I could still stick a SMF in it just to remove the possibility of it failing at a later date, this also means I'll have to buy a none DMF clutch though. Together with the new flywheel it's going to cost me nigh on £300 to swap it out (that's not including switching to an external slave if I have to). If the Flywheel is currently ok, and the clutch was definitley ok (no slipping etc) then the only possible source of the whine would be the gearbox. As most places are wanting at least £150-£250 just to open mine up and tell me whats wrong with it I may just go for a replacement gearbox instead. Wish there was as cheaper way of getting around all this but sadly there doesn't seem to be. Still need to buy a few other bits for the suspension and also pay for the new downpipe I'm having made.

Still no major news on this, engine still isn't in as I went to refit the flywheel the other day with my sparkly new bolts and realised that Volvo had sent me bolts for a flex plate rather than a flywheel (even though I also asked them for some clutch cover bolts too). Now sat waiting for them to arrive before I can start putting stuff back together again. In the mean time, subframe is now back in place fitted with some lovely poly bushes that mr Tempest suppied me with (cheers bud), stil trying to get a few bits and pieces lined up and I also think I need to re route the fuel lines as I've put them where the downpipe will go and that would be a VERY bad idea lol. Should have some pics to post in a few days (if it EVER stop raining)

Cars now officially run in, did a round trip of well over 300 miles the other day and never missed a beat. Today I washed it and er... Discovered I've got a leak.. Not sure what it is but I think it may be clutch related as that's started to judder and squeel a little on tickover, going to go have a look now to see what it is. Not looking forward to this at all.

Post 777096 by Tomcat on 2015-06-29 00:19:52

So 6-700 miles later and I have.. an oil leak from the turbo oil return (or somewhere around there), a leaky expansion tank cap, a rattling downpipe, a leaky exhaust (somewhere.. I can hear it sodding blowing on tickover), a buggered rear door central locking motor, a missing rear wheel centrecap and also an egg in a front tyre that was only fitted the day before. Having just bucket loads of fun lately. Bought four part worn Vredestein's off Seb, had them fitted and then drove to Lincoln and back. On the way back I diverted through Huddersfield (dont ask) and went over an ubber fekkin massive pothole. Didn't realise till I got home that I'd lost a centre cap and also now gained an egg in the sidewall of one of my front tyres. Now ordered two brand new Yoho's to replace the two fronts with. Also had the worlds worst tyre fitter to fit them, he managed to struggle to locate four spacers, took him a good 15 minutes a wheel and he had to resort to using a sodding screwdriver to prize them into place, in the end I told him to leave the back ones, I did one of the front ones and I told him to leave the other one. I now have at least two maybe three rims with the paint all chewed up around the bolt holes, going back on Tuesday to shout at the manager. Car is doing its bloody utmost to pee me off lately. :(

Post 777100 by Ettienne on 2015-06-29 07:42:01

sometimes with all the effort you've put in it becomes the final straw and the camels back. Sort what's urgent after shouting at the manager and do nothing else for a good month, if oil return isn't terrible just check level and use the car. My gwe dp is up hard against the bracket that protects the prop tunnel and the heat shield vibes underneath a bit but can't be heard in the car and I get a little vibe, but I did anyway with everything polyd on front end. With working on the Gul (a total pita) and the olive the sonic is just patiently waiting until both are finished, then tbh I don't want to touch another Volvo for a good year or two

Cheers bud but I think I've got one sorted now. Been out in the car again today and it's driving ok, though the exhaust blow is somewhat annoying. I'm going to get it stripped down and work out what it is in the next week or so as I can't live with it like it is, I know it's there and it's like a scratch you can't itch, it's irritating me so much.

Post 777641 by Tomcat on 2015-07-05 20:29:11

Fettled my downpipe/exhaust again today (about the 6th time), hopefully it stays in place this time and stops blowing. Also think I nay have found the source of my oil leak, I dont think it was the turbo return pipe after all, I'm hoping it was just one of the unions that wasn't tight enough on the turbo. I also managed to find a persistant clicking noise I had when pulling away, turns out that not just one but both handbrake cables where rubbing against the back of the wheels, now pinned both back for the time being with cable ties as I dont have the correct 'P' bracket for the cables (they never came with any from Volvo). Car still had a bit of a whine coming from what I think is the aircon pump, system has no gas in it at the moment so I'm hoping once it's gassed up that it shuts up, also has a slight whine from what I think is the clutch release bearing but its working fine and not leaking so I'll leave that be for the time being. After getting an egg in one of my replacement tyres I've now had two brand new tyres fitted on the fronts, I bought Yoko Parada's in 225x40x18's really seam to grip in the dry, not had chance to test them in the wet yet.

So, after an odd week and some unexpected things cropping up I now have my car back!! Had a great three hour drive back from Ste's however the drivers seat belt has decided to lock itself solid again so a new ones going to have to be ordered, the D5 will be getting sold as soon as the R is MOT'd (it's due next week)

Post 801481 by S70T5Chris on 2016-05-28 18:27:46

Well done mate, glad it went back to a good home!

good to here you have your v70r back and this thread can now continue....good work TC

Post 802257 by Tomcat on 2016-06-20 10:00:43

Had the car back for a little while now and its driving ok, MOT is overdue though as it failed last week when I put it in. They failed it on a split tyre (didn't even know about it), worn front ball joint, SRS light on and no cat (wouldnt mind but they passed it last year with no cat) SRS light has been on since I got the car back and apparently its coming up as either the drivers seat belt or the steering wheel airbag, seat belt has been replaced as it was jammed but the light still wont go out. Need to spend a couple of days going through the car once I have some spare time and it's not peeing down, think most of the cars current problems are minor.

Post 802300 by Tomcat on 2016-06-20 21:38:38

Need to get a wishbone, an expansion tank (as this ones leaking from somewhere), a tyre and then spend a few hours on it (preferably when its not raining). I will attempt to get the damn things exhaust finally sorted once I have some money, hoping to get the downpipe to exhaust V flanged as its constantly blowing there and also get the second pipe fitted at the back (still bugs me that I have two openings but only one pipe)

Wow, not updated this thread in a while. Been a baaaad year..I separated from my wife last year, moved into a smaller place with my daughter about six months ago. My wife finally moved out of our house last week but not before my tool boxes went missing. My wife then died last week.... Car is back to smoking its tits off if it's left idling for long (especially noticeable in heavy queuing traffic), Clutch release bearing squeels unless slight pressure is applied to the clutch, Drivers side drive shaft is knackered and in dire need of replacement, brakes still need bleeding, sunroof drains need clearing and the engines feeling rather flat (I actually got passed by a Golf GTI this morning and I WAS trying). The main problem I currently have (besides having no tools and a dead wife) is that I dont have anywhere to work on my car, I am going to attempt to replace my tools and then possibly find somewhere to work on her. Need a good few jobs doing as she's currently being used for travelling to work and back every day (50+ miles). Stay tuned for more exciting updates..

Post 805909 by Ettienne on 2016-10-03 06:57:54

Your not having a good year, if you were closer you could work on it here. Drivers side is the hard shaft to find, may have to change cv joints.

Bad news TC sorry to hear

Post 805915 by Tomcat on 2016-10-03 10:26:48

Thanks guys, yeah its been a bloody awful year. I'm going to get the funeral out of the way and then see where I stand once the dust settles, I need to find somewhere I can work on my car, I may even look for another place to rent but this time with a garage.

As I said last night Craig, if you're really stuck for tools/somewhere to do the work, give me a shout. Shame about your tools, like. Something very fishy gone on there. Don't want to speak (too) I'll of the dead, but I know things weren't good between the two of you toward the end. Love to you and Jess.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel, the house is still insured and they've tentatively agreed to replace them, not getting my hopes up though until they're actually in my hands.

Post 809772 by Tomcat on 2017-02-18 19:23:22

Well, been a while since I last updated this.. Since we last spoke the insurance company have decided they're not going to honour the claim because I never told them I wasn't living at the address any more, the fact that it's my house, my stuff and my wife (Kinda) was still living there apparently had sod all to do with it.. Car has been running like the proverbial swiss watch for ages however it still had a few niggling faults that I wanted sorted. I had managed to obtain a decent S/h driverside driveshaft to replace the clicky one on mine so being as I still had no tools and no where to work on it I booked it into the local indy to get it done. While it was in I also asked them to check the Thermostat because the car wasn't warming up properly.. Dropped the car off on the morning of my last day off, shouldnt have taken more than a morning to complete, when I rang later I got told it wasnt ready as they had needed to order a new thermostat housing due to both bolts breaking while they where trying to remove them and then the housing splitting in half????????? while they where trying to drill them out. In the end a quick job took them three days (ffs and I wonder why I do these jobs myself usually) I eventually got the car back and bar one of the front wheels working lose (the drivers side oddly enough) everythings as it should be. I'm now in an odd position as where I thought I'd be losing my old house (due to having it taken back by the bank) I may now be getting to keep it, going to court on Tuesday to try and get the repossession put aside. If that happens then I'll be fixing the old place up and getting it sold so I can start again somewhere new. Future plans for the car though include replacing the turbo...AGAIN.. to hopefully finally cure the sodding smoking issue and also getting a custom exhaust made up with twin exits

Post 811188 by Tomcat on 2017-04-16 11:20:53

Well the cars bitten me in the ass again.. noticed upon leaving work yesterday with the window down that the gearbox is whining its tits off in first and second, I only replaced it a couple of years ago. If it is knackered then the car will be coming off the road until I can decide what to do with it, dont really want to sell it but I dont have the time, tools or money to start another full on rebuild at the minute. In the mean time I'm going to start looking for a replacement daily

Post 811191 by MoleT-5R on 2017-04-16 12:08:55

Manual or auto TC ??

Post 811197 by Tomcat on 2017-04-16 13:57:33

Manual bud, I managed to get a replacement M58 last time but tbh it's just not lasted at all.. more than a bit fed up of paying out for replacement parts that are already worn out and hence dont last.

Post 811198 by MoleT-5R on 2017-04-16 14:08:14

I'd try and find a low mile m56 and stick a gripper or quaife in it, or even an m66 for a newer option....:)

There's tons I want to get done but I've no tools and no where to work on it until I can get moved back into the old house, that's a little way off yet as I still need to try and get the kitchen replaced some how.

Post 812114 by MoleT-5R on 2017-05-28 18:43:30

M56 or m59 with the viscous coupling are the fwd normal choices or an m66 if you fancy 6 speed option
"Poorly?" Weird how it's behaving itself now. Maybe it's run-in with the V8 has made it have a word with itself. ;)
Lol.. I know!!.. Odd isn't it!!.. tbh as far as I know I only heard it the once so maybe it was just a one off.. either way I'm glad its still going, too much else to deal with at the minute without having to sort a gearbox swap again.

Post 812125 by MoleT-5R on 2017-05-29 10:03:04

looks like your using an m59 box from watch I can see in your past threads etc, I do know for one for sale at present which is available complete with shafts, I can pm you contact details if you need them, but it does sound like your box has sorted itself out now.

Post 812135 by Tomcat on 2017-05-29 15:15:00

So far all is good, thanks for offering though.

Post 817947 by Tomcat on 2019-01-06 16:52:03

Been a while since I last updated this thread, cars been doing daily duty getting me to work and back every day, sadly though the miles are starting to tell on her and most of the stuff I replaced in the big rebuild is getting broken again. The main issue at the minute is the clutch, when I replaced it I forgot to do the slave cylinder and typically that is now leaking, not badly but enough to have contaminated the clutch and make it judder. Heater matrix seems to leak intermittently (ie.. its fine for months then it will have a week or two of steaming up the windows before stopping for yet more months). N/s front hub needs changing as its making a horrible noise and I dont fancy losing a wheel at speed. Other than that it's had a stock downpipe put on it (new) but is blowing from somewhere (presuming its from the flange where it bolts onto the back of the turbo?). Just ordered stuff to give it a service and to fix some of the above, after that I will attempt to find my boost leak issue again. More when I have some pics etc..

Post 817948 by Dangerous Dave on 2019-01-06 23:35:06

My wheel bearing was making a horrid noise which was getting worse. Turns out the nut I fitted when I changed the CV joint didn't have the locking tabs and the nut had come loose thus letting the bearing come apart and fail :( I did quite a few miles with it making the noise though :S Looking forward to some update pics :D Daily use takes its toll on our aged cars I'm afraid

Post 817950 by Tomcat on 2019-01-07 10:43:46

Really? that's interesting as the side that's making the noise is the side that had a cv replaced a while back. I'll have a look when I take it apart. Yeah sadly the cars looking very sorry for itself, front end needs a repaint due to stone chips, roof needs doing (its never been very good tbh) and there's one or two other marks on it as well.

Post 817967 by MoleT-5R on 2019-01-10 08:32:15

As Dave says, daily duties doesn't do our lovely Volvo's much good, but at least we get to enjoy them everyday, rather than just now and again. It's worse when your trying to keep 4 going, I normally manage 2 on the road as daily's for the wife and I, whilst 2 sit and wait for parts and attention. That said, I am in the process of getting all 4 up and running for the VT600 meet.

Post 819380 by Tomcat on 2019-12-15 19:29:26

So, we're now in December and the car has had yet another new clutch, though the damn pedal is intermitantly stiff as buggery and obviously needs a new master cylinder. Engine has also been replaced with one out of an 03 S60 T5, Runs a damn site better and has FINALLY after all these years stopped smoking on tickover!!!.. Think I need to swap out the heater controls as the windscreen keeps misting up and the heater refuses to work on anything but recirculate, I will try and get it swaped tomorrow if I can find the time (looking doubtful already) Car needs the roof repainting as I have bad laquer peel and the front is stone chipped to hell. Seriously considering something a lot newer now..
