Swear filter

I understand the need (well maybe,we're all adults after all) for the filter but why the hell does it filter out anything even remotely out of the normal. Getting a bit annoyed when I type something that's not particularly rude nor abusive and it gets sensored. Can we not relax it a little?, maybe just take out anything REALLY bad?

I totally agree!! I find it a more flexible attitude on other forums (you know who i mean) but like Tomcat says, were all adults and the moderators can sort out the really offensive or bad language and address those concerned...can't they?
If i'm gonna call someone a 'see you next tuesday' then i will expect a warning at the very least and the post to be removed.
That's fair.

I don't mind the swear filter.. I don't need to F***ing swear!'
Post 604145 by Pinup_gal on 2013-05-09 16:20:06
We have the swear filter because we have members under the age of 18.
Also we have members that have in the past made comment on the language or use of it.
Post 604149 by Tomcat on 2013-05-09 16:24:18
As I mentioned I dont really object to it, I just think it's a little over powering, is it an all or nothing sorta thing or can it be eased off a little?.. I'm not one for really swearing and tbh if I do I usually sensor myself anyway (too many years of being a mod).
Post 604150 by M-R-P on 2013-05-09 16:25:18
Thinking back 20 years to when I was at school - there's nothing that can be written on a forum that under 10's wouldn't have heard. Nevermind under 18 lol.
As for people complaining about the use of language, we all have a choice. If we don't like what we're reading then we can choose not to read it.
I'm not against the swear filter but I do think it's a little too strict.
Post 604151 by Pinup_gal on 2013-05-09 16:25:58
If anything just recently has shown people will go to any length to evade the swear filter when there is just no need. As a former mod yourself you'll know and understand that wading through posts to just to sensor languages isn't really something that they A) have time for or B) are here for.
Post 604154 by Tomcat on 2013-05-09 16:28:57
True, but then I can only really remember a couple of instances where I had to actualy edit out really bad swearing, on the whole the membership is very well behaved.

LOL! I remember that one! I seem to remember myself and Craig have a bit of a row about it LOL! I was probably one of the worst for bad language on this forum a few years ago! Much more §§§§ing chilled out no though.
I think the swear filter is over the top, if i'm being honest. But then, being totally honest, I think the incredibly lengthy list of rules in general is over the top. We are not kids, and the moderators are not our parents/teachers. We can make up our own minds, we don't need protecting from ourselves or our own stupidity, we are adults, and can and should face the consequences of any cockups we make along the way! (No offense intended to Santa/Pinup. It's your forum, and you run it how you see fit. It's just my opinion)
Post 604169 by stephenevans99 on 2013-05-09 17:58:41
Seriously though....I think the swear filter is quite a necessary evil. Without it, I imagine some threads would be strewn with vulgarity and foul language & not very pleasant for members and non-members/visitors alike.
Without the swear filter, I reckon 98% of us who are mature adults would moderate the language and swear 'lightheartedly' and cause no offence. Unfortunately the other 1% would ruin it for the rest of us by littering every thread with unnecessary foul language.
The remaining 1% is reserved for Frankie ;)

Oddly enough the list of words in the swear filter is quite short but the filter isn't very good at distinguishing some words from others(for instance I should be able to write S§§§§horpe, but it still blanks it out).

What happened to free speech? i think the swear filter is a breech of my human rights! :hidesbehi

Post 604287 by Haizum74 on 2013-05-09 22:48:59
I was once told swearing is immature. My reply was if that is the case then why is it called 'adult language'? Incidentally Darth Vader asked people to swear their allegiance. Nobody gonna §§§§ with him
Post 604326 by Santa on 2013-05-10 06:34:52
Unfortunately the swear filter is necessary and yes even though most are adults on here the swearing does tend to come out when things get heated or when some post out of anger. (i.e. had a §§§§ day etc).
As Dave has said, the swear filter (profanity filter to give it the full name) isn't the greatest in the world and works on pattern matching, therefore seemingly innocent words end up getting filtered accidently.
There will be conflicting opinions for and against profanity filtering (and as Chris highlighted any potential restriction) as apparently we are all adults. (And not a bunch of §§§§s shouting across the local troubled estate). Saying that if we were all adults and generally watched what we posted how would we know there is swear filter?
As for human rights, §§§§§§§§, go see your MEP.

That's §§§§ed that then !
Post 604335 by stephenevans99 on 2013-05-10 07:22:58
I think the Profanity Filter should be extended to include words such as 'Ford' and 'Peugeot' or even 'Vauxhall' and 'Audi' - I find these to be overly offensive and I'm afraid to say THEY do appear quite frequently in threads :)
Post 604342 by JUDGENINJA on 2013-05-10 08:22:14
... Or rather than make the swear filter display symbols over the letters it should be replaced by random words!!
I had a 'ford'ing bad day today....instead of §§§§§§§§§§
The aggressive person shouted," Your a 'ford'ing 'BMW driver'!!!!" For "Your a F**king Wa**er!!"
