Retrofit dual cupholders by handbrake?

I've had a good search and couldn't find a conclusive answer. My V70 has the square cubbie and the lidded ashtray in front, in the centre by the handbrake. I would prefer to fit the dual cupholders in it's place. My logic suggests that it should be a simple process to remove this section, as described in the Haynes manual, and swap out for the new dual cup holder section. But not according to these guys http://www.volvopartshop.com/cup-holder-centre-console-vxc70-07-3492-p.asp "The cupholder can not be installed in cars with an ashtray/cupholder insert as standard." Does anyone know for sure if this can/can't be done as a straight swap? Are the Volvopartshop guys talking tripe?

The previous owner of my car (the father in law) swapped the dual cupholder for the ashtray/cubby hole (even though he doesn't smoke) so balls to the doubters - it's possible. I think the newer cars have a different center console layout, preventing these mods but if you're car is pre-2004, you'l be fine.

The twin cup holder just lifts out to leave rubber mat in the bottom ,but my is a 2005 year.

It's taken me 4 years to get around to it, but finally answered my own question! Yes it is possible, and a total piece of P. All of 15 mins to swap over...

Well done, that's a bit like me putting stuff on the the shelf as I do and it letting it sit there till I get around to a mass fitting day, my external oil cooler is like that, along with other parts but will be on soon..........
