They come with the whole housing I think. Is this simply because Volvo wants to sell a big expensive part rather than a small cheap part, or is there a sound engineering reason for it?

might be worth trying ford for the same part, might be a lot cheaper.

Isn't it because it comes as a complete unit? ie, Thermostat, housing and CTS?

Yeah... I don't actually need one (yet) - mine is fine - I was just looking to do a "preventative" swap as part of a coolant change. But no harm in swapping for his one that's newer / less miles / I can clean first, given the hassle factor when it DOES go up the creek!

i believe the later ones that are a moulded housing are scheduled with the cambelt change, but often missed by non volvo specialists.
i wouldnt think it is worth fitting a secondhand 'stat ? - might be worse than the one that comes off.
there are different ones as well depending on age.
