Took the C70 down for it's annual test, and it failed on the front wheels rubbing the wheel arch liner, because it's been lowered. Just had a look, and I think I should have fitted wheel spacers.

Go online for the latest regs, it is noted that Volvo wheels rub from the factory. Take the written document back in and they should issue a certificate. As I wouldn't say that was excessive unless it interferes when stationary?? I had a practical mechanic magazine with all the updates which has a specific section for Volvos, which was the reason I bought it. I have just looked in the office for it, but can't find it at the moment. if I find it I'll scan it over to you.

Does that mean your pb last week is null and void ?
Does that mean your pb last week is null and void ?
Why would it be null and void, car had a valid MOT then.
tester sounds harsh to me. raise the hieght for retest the get some spacers
Why would it be null and void, car had a valid MOT then.
It did, but at the time of the pb the car was not mot/roadworthy.....Frankie is the champion lol
In all seriousness, what you gonna do ? Will spacers be enough ? Be a pain to have to put old suspension on just for mot.
I'm not sure, but surely we could all argue that it has the front of a v70!!!
Anyway I'm keeping My fingers crossed as I've just dropped the V40 at the MOT station (might be done today, might not)..

http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MoT%20-%20Issue%2051%20-%20Sep%202011.pdf Just some advisory notes, looks like the advice is evidence rubbing doesn't necessarily mean RfR, but evidence of damage to the tyre.
http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/MoT%20-%20Issue%2035%20-%20April%202007.pdfA different exert : A tyre-some issue We have had quite a few queries about Volvos showing evidence of tyre contact with the inner wing at some time. This evidence is not a reason for failure on its own but has caused testers some concern.
It did, but at the time of the pb the car was not mot/roadworthy.....Frankie is the champion lol
It wasn't on the public highway though.

The wheel rub service bulletin only applied to P2 cars. Just rip the lines our mate, make it lighter too :)
Yep that is where manufacturers have confirmed, but reading a couple of the docs, it isn't just a clear cut case as they can fail these cars too. It is not a get out of jail card just because you own a P2
what a load of crap all my arches have been rubbed,
Don't tell him that!!! We'll never hear the end of it!!
think you'll find i always was
:uglyhamme
what a load of crap all my arches have been rubbed,
Where you live shouldn't that be "All my arches have been robbed" ?
Where you live shouldn't that be "All my arches have been robbed" ?
kids think all my cars are cool round here so i get no grief
The wheel rub service bulletin only applied to P2 cars. Just rip the lines our mate, make it lighter too :)
Unfortunately it's rubbing the front chassis rail as well.
just fit some 2CV tires their like bike tires.:slap: just what size tires do you have fitted, are they the stock size or bigger.
They're 225/45/17's, it'll be real fun when I stick the 235s on the 18s. ;)
think you'll find i always was
I think you'll find Dave was. ;)
Not a good showing by the 'Softies' today 0/2 on the MOT's !
.....and mines in 3 weeks !
They're 225/45/17's, it'll be real fun when I stick the 235s on the 18s. ;)
Easy way to sort mot is put some one elses wheels on with 215 or less but tyres rubbing on the wall is a failure for a reason leading to a greater chance of blow outs
Easy way to sort mot is put some one elses wheels on with 215 or less but tyres rubbing on the wall is a failure for a reason leading to a greater chance of blow outs
I'm fitting spacers tomorrow, so it should solve the problem. :)
Mine have rubbed for ever - never failed an MOT. Do you a swap?
They're 225/45/17's, it'll be real fun when I stick the 235s on the 18s. ;)
you know you are only supposed to use 215's on the front? even my 19's were 215's
Mine have rubbed for ever - never failed an MOT. Do you a swap?
Sounds like I need to use your MOT tester.
you know you are only supposed to use 215's on the front? even my 19's were 215's
But I want more grip. ;)
But I want more grip. ;)
To the test station ?.
No, but I don't want to change my wheels for every MOT.

Just a suggestion Steve, if you haven't already, get a 4 wheel alignment because mine were rubbing until I first got my wheels aligned. Also, isn't there a memo from Volvo about wheels rubbing?
My fronts do on full front lock. Sounds to me like an anal tester with a problem with lowered cars.
Could you not fit thicker lock stop pads to decrease full lock a bit ?
looking at those shocks it looks like its dumped in the weeds. did the tyres show up today or yesterday
Could you not fit thicker lock stop pads to decrease full lock a bit ?
P1s don't have bolt on stops like P2s, also it's got blue stops which I believe are the thickest for a P1.
looking at those shocks it looks like its dumped in the weeds. did the tyres show up today or yesterday
Thursday mate, will be going on my Pegs once they've been refurbed.
Just a suggestion Steve, if you haven't already, get a 4 wheel alignment because mine were rubbing until I first got my wheels aligned. Stribo this is a loads of rubbish,THIS IS NOT A MOT FAILURE AT ALL,SPECIAL NOTE FOR ALL VOLVOS FWD WITH THAT TOLERANCE,HENCE WHY THEY HAVE A METAL PLATE OVER THE PLASTIC INNER ARCH,TRUST ME ON THAT ONE MY MOT CENTRE WHO DOES ALL MY CARS,NEVER ADVISE ON THAT AND ALWAYS SAYS THAT IS OK FOR VOLVOS AS YOU ALL KNOW AND HEIS VERY SEVERE ON EVERYTHING. I SUGGEST THAT YOU TAKE YOUR MOT ELSEWHERE Seb
Anyway I'm keeping My fingers crossed as I've just dropped the V40 at the MOT station (might be done today, might not)..
So did it pass or not ?.
Nope...Link to project thread..
Well news is not overly bad: Airbag ECU fault - this maybe the box itself not being coded to the car?? I wasn't told that I needed it doing. Airbag fault Drivers side - I've been always looking at the passenger side, so I'm hoping a dodgy wire. Anyway garage is going to keep the car for the repair ... And finally the usual drop links. I had cheaply ones from Eurocarparts, so off on the hunt for some decent ones..
Having raised the front by 30mm at the weekend, I took it for the retest today, and pased with flying colours. :D
Having raised the front by 30mm at the weekend, I took it for the retest today, and pased with flying colours. :D
That's what we like to hear, good on ya.
Well done mate ;)
........ and immediately dropped afterwards?
........ and immediately dropped afterwards?
Like you need to ask lol.
It will be Saturday, the test centre even told me to drop it before I took it back to have the tracking done. :slap:
only just read this, as others have already correctly pointed out it is only a fail if the wheel touches when stationary on full lock. evidence of conflict whilst manouvering because the body has moved andtyre touched the liner is never a fail.
I think the tester was just overly picky, won't be going back there next year.
