The R overheated whilst Rachel was driving it home tonight, so looked into changing the thermostat, but PFV and EuroCarParts only list the thermostat and housing complete. As the housing comes apart, I'm sure it would be possible to change just the 'stat, but what one would I use? Any (sensible) ideas gratefully received.
as far as im aware thats correct on the S60R, i personally would only use a volvo one as the aftermarket ones can be a bit hit and miss

Just to ask is the cooling fan running when it hot when the air con is switched off ?. I think the engine temp sensor is on the thermostat which I think goes to ecu which runs the fan.
The fan was running yes, but Rachel wasn't even sitting in traffic, so the fan shouldn't have been needed. I think it just stuck shut, as by the time I got to the car 10 minutes later it was back down to normal temperature.

Are there any air bubbles coming up throught the coolant in the header tank it could have had a air (steam) lock after it got hot then as you say cooled down then ok again.

I didn't see any when I restarted it, it drove the mile home fine after Rachel had stopped, I'm guessing the 'stats starting to go and want to change it before it gives up totally, was just hoping to be able to buy it on it's own rather than with the housing assembly.
Looking at the parts listing volvo did one upto -2001 then changed it 2002-2004 then changed it again in 2005- on years and changed that once aswell. The best bet I would say is see if the 2005- on year would fit as they would not have changed it for no reason I would guess ?.
Just thinking are the small rubber hoses that connect to the turbo steel pipes all ok at the back of the engine,I take it you are not low on coolant .
No, coolant level is fine.
Not happy to say the least. Tried taking the thermostat out to test it, and turns out the aux drive belt, p.a.s. pump has to come off to get to it!. So it's going go our indie to be done. It only took me 10 mins to change the 'stat in the C70.
