A friendly feedback discussion...
I thought I’d start a thread so that the whole forum can have their say rather than just being one person sending a PM to another.
Before I start, I'd like to ask that
A) This remains friendly and respectful so please, no slating of any individual or group.
B) This thread remains on topic (for a change).
C) This thread not be removed unless the above requests are breached.
D) You all remember that threads like this often end badly and as a result, I could be risking my membership by starting this so try to play nicely!
Now. Here's how I see things...
Members here are mainly male, between the ages of 30 to 50 (obviously there are some variations) the youngest member is currently 15. There's only one laydee who posts regularly.
The likelihood of someone under 12 joining this forum is as close to nil as makes no difference.
Then why should the swear filter be so strict?
I understand that some words are truly offensive and yes, filtration should be applied but lets face it, it's nothing that any of us haven't heard before. Including the under 12's (let's not kid ourselves, school kids probably know more swear words than we do)
The fun game of finding ways to evade the swear filter is one thing but I think we shouldn't have to.
We're all capable of being pleasant to each other, regardless of opinion but now we can't even say "££££ turpin", "££££terton" or "s££££horpe" (These are just examples) I feel it's hampering the quality of the posts/threads and is bordering on petty.
I have the ability do decide what’s appropriate in my posts and what isn’t, as do most (if not all) of us and I would like the opportunity to police my own posts. And conversely, exorcise my right to not read anything I find offensive. Not that that happens often, I found Graeme’s severed toe far more offensive than any written word but I still had a look lol.
So I respectfully ask our forum management, is it really THAT necessary to have such a strict word filter? And can you justify why?
I appreciate that the management can run the forum however they see fit and if I don’t like it, I can ££££££ off somewhere else but I feel it necessary to bring this matter to the forefront.
It’s the members who make a forum, I’ve had my say, I’d like to hear other’s opinions (members and mods) so… am I talking ££££££££? Do I have a point? Should I just shut the hell up?
Over to you guys and PLEASE keep it sensible.

Some very good and valid points, we are (mostly) all adults here and should be able to differentiate between right and wrong, it does seem a little silly when a simple pub name is victim of the swear filter.
However.....I think, and this is not meant to be a dig at anyone, so if it appears that way I apologise, that all that is needed here is a bit of ‘moderation’ from the mods, post anything offensive once.....post removed/warning, repeat and it’s a short ban or whatever, this I believe would also cut out the circumnavigation of the swear filter as well.
I do understand how people’s circumstances may change, and they may not be able to get on VPC as much as they would like, maybe another mod to supplement the ranks is something to think about.....again these are just my own personal thought and comments, if you don’t like them then ££££ off lol.
Post 633621 by Dangerous Dave on 2013-08-08 20:43:27
On a technical note, with words like 'scunthorpe', the current swear filter is quite basic and cannot differentiate in certain cases (although it should, but isn't).
In regards to words like 's££££horpe' the current swear filter is quite basic and cannot differentiate in certain cases (although it should, but isn't).
My point exactly, humans would see the true context of the word.....computer just says no lol
Post 633624 by LiamT4 on 2013-08-08 20:46:27
Does it matter if theres a swear filter? Doesn't bother me in the slightest if i can't say ££££ and when it does filter out the name of a place or something by mistake, then it just makes chuckle a bit.
Post 633625 by Biff on 2013-08-08 20:46:30
I am told I have Tourette's...
I like the fact I have to think about what I'm saying so it doesn't look like I'm rich.
££££ ££££ ££££ ££££ funny how the best swear words have 4 letters.
Post 633627 by stephenevans99 on 2013-08-08 20:57:07
The swear filter does tend to be a little too strict.
Funnily enough though, a few days ago I tried to avoid the filter by using the word 'ar$se', the filter corrected it to it's correct spelling. lol
A good thread Martin & as you mentioned in your opening post, I too hope it remains friendly & respectful. VPC IS a great forum, and if the swear filter is the only thing we can grumble about - 'tis not the end of the ££££££££ world. ;)

Post 633631 by LiamT4 on 2013-08-08 21:02:22
I don't understand why it wouldn't remain a friendly thread????????? Surely people have other things to think about, rather than having a strop over a thread like this.
Post 633637 by Volvo_Mad on 2013-08-08 21:10:25
what the ££££ is all this fuss about £££££££ swear words, it's a load of £££££££ nonsense plus i'm just testing out this £££££££ profanity £££££££ filter. Seems like it's ££££ hot to me because every £££££££ word i type is being £££££££ filtered ,either that or i've got £££££££ £ signs on the brain :D :hilarious
Post 633647 by tichai on 2013-08-08 21:50:39
Not too bothered with the swear filter really, I just make up my own swear words to fit when I read the post :)
On a slightly more serious note, I play some online games and they usually have an option to either turn the swear filter on or off. Is that possible on a forum?
Post 633674 by Santa on 2013-08-08 22:46:36
OK the word dick accidentally slipped in. (Excuse the pun).
Scunthorpe is now a word again.
Piss has been taken out
I've just reviewed the filter, some words were still there from before I owned the forum, some have been added since, I have left the words I've felt are swear words and really don't add anything to the site.
D) You all remember that threads like this often end badly and as a result, I could be risking my membership by starting this so try to play nicely!

Not sure why you believe you would be banned for someone elses actions?
The forum is open for all that want to join, above the age of 13, arent here to spam etc and that don't break the rules. Swear filter has been adjusted as above.
The fun game of finding ways to evade the swear filter is one thing but I think we shouldn't have to.
Against the rules as well. The swear filter has now been adjusted so there should be no need for such games now.
Word dick wasn't supposed to be there. (More an extension of the word dickhead).
Most do post appropriately and within the rules, some don't. The filter is there for those that don't. I feel really sorry for Graeme and his threads needed a warning..........because I was eating when I first saw one of the pictures.......the warning was provided in the title.
So I respectfully ask our forum management, is it really THAT necessary to have such a strict word filter? And can you justify why?
Yes the swear filters existence can be justified and have continually proven itself a valuable tool. It's not the most advanced filter in the world and is only based on pattern searching but should we have to invest time in finding a better alternative when the majority will generally post appropriately and within the rules?
I appreciate that the management can run the forum however they see fit and if I don’t like it, I can ££££££ off somewhere else but I feel it necessary to bring this matter to the forefront.
Yeah, basically as management we could run the forum however we wanted and to an extent we do, we run it in what we feel is the best way for the majority and intended audience. (And also as legal etc as possible).
It’s the members who make a forum, I’ve had my say, I’d like to hear other’s opinions (members and mods) so… am I talking ££££££££? Do I have a point? Should I just shut the hell up?
Members are a vital component but its catering for the right members. (We aren't going to turn this into a warez or porn site for example because people like free films and boobs, we keep it relevant for the intended audience). Do you have a point? Yes you do. Do we as management have a point? Yes we also do. It's finding the best balance for the majority and the intended audience and it can be a difficult balance to strike. Will we meet all the needs of anyone person? No we won't, the forum wouldn't be feasible if we did.

Hello Rich, thanks for the suitably concise reply and thanks for adjusting the swear filter. I was hoping for more opinions before any action being taken but no bother. As you've seen in the past, when threads like this pop up, things can potentially get ugly. My concern wasn't getting banned or warned for starting this thread but the the potential blowback should it have gone bad. I like to think you guys know me well enough to know I wouldn't start a thread for the sake of stirring things up but to bring about a healthy show of opinions, I was just covering my arse ;)

This whole thread reminds me of when I went to amsterdam and took a tour round the Heinaken Brewry, there was a part where you could get your name printed on a bottle of heinaken, we spent 2 hours trying to get around the swear filter only to settle on a bottle labeled Anal Discharge in the end childish I know but we also found a way to get more than the alloted 2 free beers on the tour also so there was another reason we spent 2 hours there.

This reminds me of a Tim Minchin joke.

Personally I see no need for a swear filter. Most people, not all, but most use swearing in everyday sentences. It's just become more common and acceptable in modern times. And most of the occasions where swear words are used, it doesn't imply any offense, it's just a good describing word!
And, as in the video above, ££££ still says ££££ or ££££ still says ££££. Whichever way you look at it! Everyone reading it knows what it says, it still says it, even though the letters are swapped for a £ sign. So what's the point in it?
T5D5 doesn't have a swear filter, and there is no issue over there that I see. If anything swearing is more common place here on VPC, because of the swear filter. As the word gets converted to £ signs, people see it more acceptable to use the swear word, and as above - stick ££££ in a sentence, and it still says ££££
Just my 2 pence.
(can I say £££££££?.... NO! That's just silly!)
Post 633910 by M-R-P on 2013-08-09 18:15:00
Well put mate.
I give it less than 2 minutes before you cop it for dodging the swear filter and posting that vid lmao
Post 633913 by S70T5Chris on 2013-08-09 18:27:39
Probably mate, but you never know! My point may be well received??!!!
Another point, while I'm on a roll - LMFAO still says 'laugh my ££££ing ass off'! Just because the '££££ing' is blanked out doesn't stop anyone from reading the word! It's still says '££££ing'!! It's a bit sad that it is necessary to blank the word out, we are not children!
Is this possible? - (this may have already been mentioned?) Can you have an option in your user settings to turn the swear filter on and off when you are logged in? That way people who would rather have £ signs in place of swear words can, and those that don't mind seeing the word '££££' written down can?!!

I personally welcome the filter, I think it's quite polite to communicate without the need to swear when expressing yourself. I also find it amusing that a 3 page thread can be produced on how annoying or inconvenient it is that swear words don't appear on the screen despite what is typed..
You bunch of dicks!! ;)
