As all the usual suspects know, I've had the 855 T-5R a few years now and given it some welly down the 1/4mile, I still think I can squeeze a tad more out of the lowly 15g, 14.52 is brilliant but now the challenge is what can I get it to do? So some careful, but quite common mods ( and some not !!! ) are now required to push the boundary a tad as we can't let Frankie's 19t hybrid have all the fun !! I have already popped in a Pipercross panel filter and a HLM304 ecu ( courtesy for Jamest5r ), the car is decat, due to it collapsing and just knocking it out with the easiest cure to the problem and that, is then connected to a Jetex/BSR rear system and thats about it, the car runs on normal unleaded ( except race weekends ) as it is a daily drive, but I am just starting to experiment to whether the more expensive fuel gives me extra (more on that later if it works!!) and this is where we are at on a 14.52 second car with next to no mods (except slicks, to keep Frankie boy happy, but then he says they don't make a difference anyway...maybe he's right again folks...lol) So with Retro Rides Gathering, Trax 2013 and Shakey on 28-29 september it's time to get the 855 in the garage and fit some of the parts that have been gathering in the previous six months and giving it a check over before next months Mot As External Error and Claymore already know ( as they had been thinking on similar lines ) I have made my own R.I.P pipe ( just got one off a S60 and cut out the 90deg bend and jointed the pipe back together) was then fitted using a selection of orginal pipes to make it work ( as this will be altered shortly with the addition of one of Blackbeast's R.I.P hard pipes, photos to follow when the hoses arrive ) First thing to do was get rid of the old exhaust manifold, that was cracked by the sound of it, oh and was it.......????? so I popped in a Japanifold that I had off another forum member that had been lightly ported!!!! ( I had taken a bit of a punt here and found to my relief that the porting he had advertised was actually just a bit of a light heart'd attempt at knife edging, which I then exaggerated as far as I dared !!!
Nice start Adrian, hopefully get close to Frankies time sometime soon.
If I can shave .5 of a second off the 1/4, I'll treat myself to a new turbo.... actually I'll probably need a new set of rods..lol

Post 635171 by MoleT-5R on 2013-08-14 00:04:24

Quick update... new manifold in and turbo on, some pipework in, plugs and leads changed, various bits fitted back properly or replaced if broken ( GARAGES is all I have to say and why do owners let them get away with it ????), all bits that have niggled me for the six years I've owned the car and then a bit of cleaning around the engine bay. Hopefully some blingy bits going in tomorrow folks and a few pic's of whats been done

Post 635557 by MoleT-5R on 2013-08-15 02:24:13

As promised it's picy time, have had an evening of massive highs and sinking lows.......yes we got the car fired up on the button, running sweet and quiet, just going out of the garage when, Alex thankfully in the dark, spotted a nasty oil leak, it was coming from the turbo oil feed banjo, so I tried to tighten it,when I should have undone it and checked both washers were there, this was the result Image What a muppet, thankfully I got the thread out. Just got to sort it quick as were off to Retro Rides on Friday On the good side..... been fitting some nice new bits, Sir Blackbeast kind supplied me with the last of his lower hard pipes with dump and idle valve ports and a quality bit of piping it is, added some nice red silicone hoses and a bailey dump valve Image Image Image Image And the home made RIP pipe crafted (lol) from a S60 turbo to intercooler pipe, some tidying to be done, but a go stop gap till I make an alloy one Image Image Image

Post 635568 by 1112lewis on 2013-08-15 06:58:40

Looking good already! Nothing worse than an oil leak but hopefully an easy fix!

Post 635851 by MoleT-5R on 2013-08-16 00:39:00

Well oil leak fixed, pinched the banjo off the v70 r's turbo, but as for the washers, what a game, couldn't get anything the right size, so used some smaller ones and filed them out to fit. Been out for a run all seems well. Big day for T-5R tomorrow, the run down for retro rides with claymore so lots of pics no doubt.

Post 636981 by MoleT-5R on 2013-08-19 23:14:15

Well what a fantastic weekend we had with Colin,James and the Flipped Out Customs crowd, had to do a bit of cleaning as the weather and being parked outside work had made a right mess of the car, so saturday morning I whizzed over the car with the quick detailer, so it was at least clean, then stupidly I tried a little Meg's ultimate compound on the rear wing..... oh crap.....the rest of the car now looks bad, so then had to finish what I started. Popped to the local town to get supplies for later and on return decided to try my new tube of Meg's dark wax, so set about the bonnet, to comments that I'm starting to take after Wobbley (it will never be that clean .. lol). The bonnet looked ok when Jayne then said " why not try a some on the rear quarter, so off we go and wow, how good does that look, now I have to do the rest to the same standard......think it was worth it Image A few more mods ImageImage Image Now back into the garage for the rest of the current plan mods that time didn't allow to happen. Here a few shots whilst do the last mods and some of the horrors found along the way The home made top rip pipe converted out of a s60 top pipe just cut the elbow out and re-jointed the pipe Image Work in progress ( and a little thieving of the V70 R as it had new plugs and an oil line banjo) Image the bits coming off seemed to just keep getting more Image A bit bare, but more to change yet Image Cracked waste gate ( oh well it will have to last till planned turbo change as I think the 15g has a little more to give yet Image Image

Post 636986 by MoleT-5R on 2013-08-19 23:35:00

Turbo recirc looked a little knackered so time for the blanking plate I had off graemewelch when he'd just made a batch ( thanks mate took a while but its in now ) Image Image Image and finally a big thank you to Ian for passing on some unused air filters and thought James spotting that I don't have one on my car, bought it down to Retro Rides so the car would sound even better going up the hill ( if you could here it over the tyre squeal..lol) Image

Wow that's some crack it's a wonder your getting any real boost levels with the housing cracked to that extent. Clearly a good turbo elsewhere.. Car is looking very well indeed, I remember seeing it a couple of years back at Avon and it looks like an entirely different car now! Job very well done, looking forward to reading your updates as they come through, if you don't mind me saying your car is a testimony to Volvo build quality and even when they look like they need a good clean and polish that really is, within reason, all they need to look spot on again and worth saving :)

I think would be the right word, but if any of you know my high miler, this is really the first season that I've started tidying her up, as before I would only bother do little bits if there was a 1/4 mile gain to be had and now it's, while stuff is off, I'll try and tidy a bit more and improve the general appearance of her step by step, pics like this do help encourage me, but do wonder how long it will be till I become a bit ocd about her A Not so Sunday drive up Prescott Hill Climb with Mrs Claymore Image
How did u do ur wiring for the bigger throttle body..i understand that the present one is short.
Sorry for the delayed reply, but it's been a hectic few days. The wiring on mine was tight so, I dis-assembled the throttle body and rebuilt it with the spindle rotated 180degs to what it was before, then rotate the throttle position sensor mounting plate 180degs and hopefully the wiring will now reach ok, if not look down below as there is a bolted on wiring clip, if this is unbolted or repositioned, the harness plug should reach easily, hope this help mate.

Kept this a bit hush hush, but she let me down big style last wednesday morning, conking out at 05.30 on the way to work leaving me no choice but to walk to work and come back in the evening to try to start it or recover it home, needless to say it wasn't play ball and green flag return her home. I'm not pee'd off as it has only failed to get me were I want to go twice in the 6 years I've had her and both times it has just cut out and will turn over but will not fire, checked for spark ok, checked for fuel no pressure at fuel rail, this could be down to the wiring to the main relay ( as was the problem before ) as the wiring here is pretty crusty so I was thinking of a bit of a re-work here and was wondering if anyone has any links to sites that can supply replacement electrical connectors to OEM specs?

Post 666886 by mikealder on 2013-12-07 12:17:50

Jumper out the fuel pump relay (the red/pink relay), if it starts get a new fuel pump relay, don't drive it about with the relay base jumpered out as the only way to switch the fuel pump off is to turn off the ignition - If it still won't run with the fuel pump relay jumpered you need to check for +12V on the pins of the relay base then check +12V is actually getting to the fuel pump tank connection - Mike

Update Got fed up with the 'supermarket trolley' handling characteristics of late and haven't liked the front end ride height since fitting the V70r front springs and struts. Also nasty knock is regularly coming from the front end, so time to strip out the struts, check bushes and mountings and fit the old t5-r spring to the v70r struts. The bushes are all fine ( but will polybush the lower arms soon ) and drop link are also still good. Whilst manipulating the anti-roll bar from the passenger side, I found the knock, the drivers side anti-roll bar mounting looked to have broke its back fixing bolt, damn I thought, as this will be hard to extract without dropping the sub-frame. I finished off working on the passenger side and whipped the wheel back off the drivers side, as I'd already done this side, I started to investigate the broken bolt to discover no broken bolt, but the mounting has ripped out of the sub-frame by cracking all the way around underneath it. So looks like a sub-frame swap is now on the cards

Not really the day I planned today, started stripping bits of to give the gearbox a good clean and ready it for fitting, but in the process I snapped an engine mounting bolt Image So some heating, wd-40, a good stud extractor were required and some patience as had to get it out with out damaging the thread. The Stanley Proto extractors are excellent and wish I'd discovered them years ago Image Image Image Also goto the heater matrix changed as well today, got one off the bay £22.50 plus the postage Image Image not the nicest of places to work, but no way as bad a job as I had been lead to believe Image

Post 692804 by MoleT-5R on 2014-03-03 21:14:48

This arrived today ( thanks Pete ), so I couldn't resist fitting it Image and as the weather was good today I decided to do a dummy run on subframe removal before doing the T-5R, obviously the T-5R will have to be a lot higher as the engine and box will still be in the subframe, all seams simple enough and the dolly makes light work of rolling it out when disconnected, steering joint looks like it could be a pain when the engine is in the way, but I sure I'll manage Image Also stripped the V70 of the rest of Claymore's new front end eg. bumper, wings and readied the bonnet for popping off, for when I'm next going over to Shrewsbury Image Image Image

Time for a small update on the T-5R and whats happened in the last few months Image The engine was dropped out on its subframe for a transmission swap and new up-rated clutch to be fitted, a fairly painless job, of which I'm getting well practiced at, for reasons most of you know. Image Flywheel looks to be in good condition for 270,000 miles and is now fitted with an R clutch plate and up-rated Sach's cover which certainly is up to the job, as for pedal pressure, I'm going to have one leg bigger than the other, its heavy but tolerable Image The standard clutch on the left and the new one on the right Image Clutch fitted Image Timing belt and new shorter auxiliary belts fitted and aircon pump removed (space for a supercharger someone might say) Image Image Amazed by how clean the 3" throttle body was after 9-10 months of daily use and the Jap manifold is still looking crack free Image Image Image The same couldn't be said for the turbo, which had a nasty looking crack in the exhaust housing, across the waste gate area, so it was changed for another 15g, which was most kindly donated by Colin from his T-10K's donor car (Thanks again mate) Image Image subframe swap and installation of some "Sponge" inserts to stiffen things up, polybushes to be added at a later date to the lower arms and arb bushes will be up-rated at the same time Image and the cheapo flea bay disc's are still in good condition after 18 months or more

Yesterdays tidy up session pinched one of WD's ideas and hid the H.I.D. ballast's in the ecu box and the passenger ones behind the battery Image Image Image Image Image also went about sorting out the loose bracket in front of the power steering pump, searched high and low in the garage for the long bolt and sleeve, only to come to the conclusion that when the previous owner had the engine changed, some 170,000 miles ago, that the garage never re-fitted the part, as it's not in the pic of when the engine came out

Post 717916 by MoleT-5R on 2014-06-10 00:29:44
Nice work, love the 70 series bonnet release, was it tricky to fit? How did you fit it and was there much to modify to get it to fit?[/QUOTE Yes mate, the V70 bonnet pull is much nicer than the 850 one, but on the v70, the slam panel has a scoop, low down to accommodate your fingers when you pull it, so things are a little tighter on the 850, but it seems to fit ok and I can get my fingers around it ok to release it. All that was required was a suitable bit of rod to be bent to shape as the 850 rod length needs to be longer than the v70's. The catch just clip's in on the V70, so a couple of slots need the be cut for the bottom of the catch to pivot in to, the top just then clip over, the position on mine wasn't perfect so I added a clip to the bonnet internal edge for the clip to catch on, but other than that it is pretty much straight forward, I'll try and get some pic's of the slots it clips into in the next few day when I'm off work

Well cracked the 10v gearbox open this evening and was pleasantly surprise by the limit of the damage, but will have to replace one part I hadn't bargained on, one half of the case.....Damn For those who've not taken one a part before, it is relatively easy, the selector roll pin needs knocking out and the selector removed, then lay the box on the bell housing flange and remove all the casing bolts and carefully prise the case apart, rotate the big gear selector as you gently lift the casing of and it should come away easily. Image Image And the damage Image Image Image Image So I will be having to replace a few cogs and half of the case, that will teach me....don't forget when you've drained your new gearbox of oil, as this will happen in approximately 30 miles if you even get that far

Post 722221 by Jamest5r on 2014-07-03 20:25:33

Think I did about 7 on an empty box, didn't like it very much but then again the m59 likes eating it's own innards :)

Well a bit more progress made this evening, not too sure on a couple of the bearings on the layshaft and reverse/fifth hub. The gears on the top of the input and layshaft both are a bit hammered, but that is only to be expected as they appear to have been trying to convert the layshaft bearing rollers into milled swarf, of which a large proportion was caught on the magnetic disc in the bottom of the gearbox. Post 722255 by MoleT-5R on 2014-07-03 23:30:54
Certainly been munching do you have another box Adrian
I have a spare m56 box with standard ratio's, Pedro has kindly offered some internals from a 10v box, so it is just a case of moving them here and finding a spare case, as I don't really wish to have to strip the spare box if I don't have to. A swap of the crown wheel and pinion swap isn't as straight forward as you'd think on these boxes, as you need to swap 2 pinions (1 on the layshaft cluster and the second on the reverse/fifth gear shaft) so a bit more stripping and swopping would be required, but then I would lose the lower 1st and 2nd gears if I swopped the final drive into the m56 I have here

Well had a little time lately to knock up some pressure test equipment for myself, to test the induction system between the turbo and the throttle body, using 2x custom made bungs and a 3/4 bsp blank and a number of fittings plumbed up to allow me to control the air from my compressor and a gauge to see whats happening. Image popped the pipes of the TB & turbo and blanked them off, then fitted the gauge/control valve to the idle valve pipe and blanked the dump valve pipe and added compressed air to 30psi..... Image Image Image and all became clear on the boost issue side, the intercooler has a hole it the bottom end cap and a crack somewhere under the top cap in the core somewhere. So now I have found the leak it will be time to install a new intercooler, which I have on the shelf here, from Frankies red 850R (thanks to Frankie) and hopefully when I test it next it should leak free.

Post 744175 by MoleT-5R on 2014-10-23 00:15:00

Just a small update on the Green Thing, she made the 240+ mile round trip to pick up the Gul from Foamy (Mark) and then straight to Retro Rides Gathering, unfortunately on arrival it was apparent that the brakes were grunging, I had spare pads, but fronts not rears. So she was sidelined to the vpc stand and the Gul did the hill, not that brakes were an issue on the hill, the grunging just doesn't sound or look good. We limped home and the Green Thing is now patiently awaiting her new gearbox, N/A rad, and new oil cooler and anything else that might be available for her before next season starts......I have a vision and it's big...lol

Post 760169 by MoleT-5R on 2015-02-19 00:01:27

Well time for a small update, I've braved the cold and headed into the workshop and started on the Quaife installation and gearbox rebuild Image Image Image Image Image Well I think that is most of it back together correctly ( I did dummy fit the diff to check it's fit and carefully selected the parts from the to donor boxes, so I've used the least worn parts from the pile of bit I had, so I'm now running Jimbob's gear clusters and my crown wheel and selectors ) first thing tomorrow is a dummy fit of the case to check everything works as it should and nothing is too tight or too loose, then the two parts of the case can be sealed, bolted together, the clutch slave will then be installed and it then BE TAGGED WITH A BIG LABLE SAYING FILL BEFORE USE !!!!! and will then be ready for installation into the T-5R (olive)

M.O.T. TIME !!!! well I've dropped her off at the garage and I await the result, although she should fly it you can never be to sure, but It was nice to take her for a spin as she's been parked up since the beginning of September....:)

Post 761696 by MoleT-5R on 2015-03-02 15:23:01

Well she's though, with just a couple of niggles ( how on earth the dipped beam on the drivers side stopped working after only travelling 4 miles I don't know as it was checked ok before I left) small blow on the exhaust and were the bumper joins the drivers front they weren't to keen on but no surprise, any how all good now and just an advisory on the front pad levels ( 3-6 month left in them even with my driving....:) ) So she's ready to be pressed back into daily service, even though she has got to be back in the workshop soon for a gearbox transplant, new intercooler and many other nice bits before the avon meet at the end of the month

Post 762228 by MoleT-5R on 2015-03-05 15:37:38

Well that was fun, As the Gul is currently running on my hlm304 I normally run in the Olive T-5R, I took a punt on a 850r re-map on the bay recently and yes I did read that it will only work in the 850r, but me being me and the fact that when I tried Frankies 850r re-map he'd said there no way it would start a T-5R, but it did and did a good 1/4 run on it, so I took the gamble and when it arrived a few weeks back I tried a start both cars which they did, I wasn't surprised that Olive started, but I was when the Gul (obd1) started and ran, so as the Olive was still off road at the time I tried the map in Gully for my usual run to work and she wasn't totally happy with this map, more so at more than half throttle, so back in with the hlm. So I dropped it into Olive after her recent mot test and she was running nice as I had hoped she would when I took the gamble and purchased the ecu, now she's taxed I used her for my usual work run and my god this thing goes like a rocket ship with this new map in and I don't have a clue what it is, but it certainly is fun (traction is a major issue in damp conditions though) so I now need to try and find out what it is I've messaged the seller and hope to find out more but is there any other way to find out what this map is ??? Not sure (it would be a bonus if it was as it was a right bargain imho) might try and see if the laptop will connect to it, as I could do with doing some logging to try and iron out an underlying issue on this car from york last year
Love this car and thread, great read !
Thankyou I love this car too, don't know how I managed to just leave it sat on the drive from last september, but it does feel so good to be back in her again, although I will admit the suspension has seen better days compared to the Gul and the gearbox has a bit of a whine to it (going to be changed shortly) but she is running well apart from an on going 3/4-full throttle issue that developed at York last year and I still have not got to the bottom of.

Post 762490 by bunka T5 on 2015-03-06 15:30:36

This 3/4 throttle issue how do you mean? I know mine has a strange issue with throttling, it does accelerate when progressively pressing the pedal swiftly but it doesnt give me anywhere near full power unless i kickdown (even then it sometimes doesnt do anything :s), very odd issue but I've read it could be a PTC (?) valve. Or terrible autobox.. I dont know..

Or terrible autobox.. I dont know..
mines manual so no need to kick-down, but the issue is like a rapid mis-fire of fluffing I call it at 3/4 to full throttle and I think at least one of a few things is happening :- 1. boost leak big enough to fool the maf and ecu, I have checked the system and pressure tested and there is a small leak on the intercooler even with the drain hole bunged 2. spark blow out, I have previously closed up the plugs a bit, but may be they need to go further or plugs need to change to a cooler plug 3. fueling going out and causing knock so retardation occurs, got to get some logging sorted on this bit and an afr gauge fitted 4. boost cut, unlikely as it's not like boost cut when experienced on a standard ecu 5. Iat's, just started thinking about detonation from a temperature point of view after reading a post by Dream3r re post ic temps in std and aftermarket ic's, so getting mine fitted and some form of monitoring of iat's is becoming top priority I have no fault codes and it doesn't matter what ecu I run (sure it happens on the std ecu too)this problem persists and doesn't seem to be affected by how high or low the boost is set at, will experiment tonight if it is rpm related, but I swapped out everything sensor, plug, lead, coil...etc that I can think of and no improvement, I may try to get a video so peeps here can hear and see for themselves as I'm sure I'm not the only one to experience this and when sorted she I'll go like stink....:)

Or terrible autobox.. I dont know..
you will always have kick-down when you press for full throttle (to the floor), unless your going really fast before you floor it, as when you open the throttle fully it in turn pulls the kick-down cable and it's then speed dependant on what happens next, you should be able to press the pedal down and feel when the kick-down is about to be operated as the pedal resistance increases at a certain point, I think your throttle cable is fitted to the smaller diameter part of the wheel that operates the throttle thus opening the throttle faster than in a manual car to compensate for this, so in theroy you should achieve full or almost full throttle before kick-down engages, but I have not had one to study so I could be talking total tosh, but I was lead to believe autos had a different throttle cable.....is this true anyone, just for my peace of mind

Well inadvertently, I have made some progress on the missing issue thanks to a porsche that had to have it, I have narrowed down the issue to 4250-5250 rpm, just when the 15g is boosting fully and as the revs continue rising and the boost starts to fall the miss disappears. so one of two things was happening 1. spark blow out or 2. boost leak. over the last few runs to work and back I've played a bit trying different things to pin point the issue further and found that I can now here a boost leak by using part throttle and letting the turbo race up after 3500rpm in 4 or 5 I can now hear a leak which I've not been hearing before so hopefully this will end the problem once sorted P.S. absolutely loving this new ecu I got from ebay, I thought my hlm was fun this just takes it up another notch :)

Right folks whats the current story on oil pumps as I seem to remember that a new volvo one can be worst that re-using an existing one in a fresh engine build...what are your thoughts and experiences ????

Post 774268 by MoleT-5R on 2015-05-26 22:35:30

Ok you've all had time to reply on the oil pump question, obviously nobody is playing with them lately so we'll move on to the current bits going on for olive. Slowly working on stripping and prepping a new T-5 lump for building up with forged rods etc ready for next year. Just started in to sorting some poly-bushing for the lower engine steady as the old one is a bit chewed up Image So I drilled the old rubber and push the sleeve out and machined it up ready for the new bush and machined the engine mounting too. I then machined up a new bush, pressed in the sleeve and then pressed the bush into the mounting Image just the subframe mounting to do now and a lick of paint, then onto the lower suspension arms, it will be interesting to see how this hard nylon stands up the the harsh punishment it will get out on the open road...;) Image

well we'll see tomorrow, setting off now to get set up and may be catch a bit of the afternoons action

Post 778814 by MoleT-5R on 2015-07-21 23:35:24

Well what a weekend that was, what with the first shake down run ending with a lift home on a recovery truck when we lost the clutch hydraulics, bled it all through again and test run ok. We set out for shakey the Saturday morning to set up camp and possibly get a couple of test runs in before the rest turn up to run on sunday. Unfortunately the clutch was still causing issues and was gone by Shrewsbury so we made an emergency pitstop at Claymore's. Another big thanks to Colin for his help and the donation of some clutch fluid and we were on the way again, only to lose the clutch twice more, the final time we tried another old bleeding method and final had something lasting ( never know so much air to be trapped in the system. We got to Shakey set up camp but were too late to get a run that afternoon, so had a beer and food and waited for the morning. Front of the que and awaiting the rain to stop so we can run. The first 2 runs showed great promise but were let down by my driving and not being use to the new grip and change points as the car is way different on the strip now, the 3rd seem to have a boost issue and the forth ripped the exhaust downpipe apart, end of racing and a noisy, if somewhat thirsty run home but she got us home with no need for a recovery this time. Here's the broken bits Image and the temporary repair Image I'm considering fitting a compensator to eliminate this happening again, but the stainless one I'm looking at is only available in 3" so will have to be sleeved down, but will be reuseable when I build myself a 3" system

Post 778816 by stribo on 2015-07-22 00:08:14

Looking at that mate, are you sure it didn't come apart because it's past its best? Obviously engine movement played its part, but with new mounts, and a new flexi, I don't think it would have happened. Just my thoughts.

Post 778822 by Nealevo on 2015-07-22 07:20:28

Agree with Steve ^^^^^^ it looks past its best, it would have failed anyway without the engine improvements, all you did is speed up its demise.

Post 778826 by MoleT-5R on 2015-07-22 09:44:07

The downpipe was what was fitted when I got her 8 years ago, but had the just the flexi replaced 5 years ago (evident by my dodgy welding). Still may fit the compensator and will be improving the engine mounts over the next month

what times did you get at Shakey?

Post 778836 by MoleT-5R on 2015-07-22 11:29:57

14.9 first run and 14.7 second run , the other 2 were not competitive because of issues with the cars running I.E. boost leak on the third run and missing exhaust on the forth. All in all it was showing promise but I broken it before I'd got used to how the power comes in and how the new found grip work out on the strip. More practice needed to get the runs right I think, as I'm definately not getting it all hooked up right yet

News flash...!!! the misfire at wot high rpm seems to be cured at last, with just a change of rotor arm, pretty sure that I changed it before and no improvement back then, but swapped it today and the misfire has vanished at wot. Thanks to the op that put up a thread re. rotor arm/misfire recently as this jogged me into looking again at the simple bits, instead of over thinking the problem.

Post 784560 by MoleT-5R on 2015-09-04 00:04:25

ok 2 runs in and the misbehaviour has started again, totally frying my brain now, going to have to waste money on new parts not knowing if the problem will be cured, I absolutely hate that, I would spend the cash instantly if I knew it was the cure, but with 3 other volvos here all deserving money spent on them I am loathed to spend money on unnecessary parts, but the issue doesn't seem as bad, so more road testing tomorrow before I make a decision on new parts, totally peeing me of now as this issue started a york last year and I've not got to the bottom of it yet, stage 0, yes it has crossed my mind but renewing anything will not pin point the failed part, I've already swapped out everything I can thing of for know good items to try and pin point the issue, to no avail ..... :(

Post 788709 by MoleT-5R on 2015-10-18 13:43:08

Oooh it's been a while since the last update and no pictures of what has been done last time, so a couple here of the new home made rip and maf to turbo piping, those who attended york will have already seen this and liked it ( it would be even better with a bit more practice tig welding thin walled tube, but time was against me there), one especially (Mr Sideways) who ran off with the rip pipe, whilst I was changing the fuel pressure reg to a 3.8bar one to see if this made any difference and to compensate for the improved flow on the intake pipe, we came away from york with a .2 improvement on my personal best (now 14.3 on a 15g). Still have the oil cooler to fit this winter and the pcv delete and oil catch tank to fit. Also the dump valve is now going to be changed to the re-circ type, so the new intake already needs modifying, as I had not planned this when I designed it and fitted the spigots for the various pipes. The whole cost for the rip and intake pipes including the silicone couplers for each end and all the mikalor clamps came in at about £125 with just a little time require cutting and welding the pipes, so a massive saving over the others being offered of late and make in nice shiny stainless steel. Image Image Image Image Also the engine stabilizer and bracketing as been installed (it still needs paint though) and is utilising the original tailgate strut mounts, although modified to suit. This also doubles up to replace the missing bolt and sleeve from the power steering bracket, that has never been there from the day I bought the car some eight years ago. Image Image

Does look good, and Adrian was most modest when saying that his welds were crap. Hell, they hold pressure, that's all that matters. They looked pretty good imo. Lol, yeah it was only once I'd ran off with it that I realised I'd need the other section for it to work!
All looks bloody lovely mate, I love the neat way you've done the intake pipe.
Thank you, but it will now require an extra spigot for the dv recirculation (when it arrives, so real no rush on this), but I'll do the same as the other spigots and have a bspp threaded fitting welded on and use a 90deg union off of that to connect to, hopefully the other unions will gain nice braided hoses to them over time....:)
Does look good, and Adrian was most modest when saying that his welds were crap. Update time....new intake pipe has required a small mod, A 1" spigot is now required to allow dv re-circulation back into the intake pipe, this is currently blanked off in the pics, whilst I'm awaiting the delivery of the new red piping the plumb the new re-circ valve to the new spigot. well on closer inspection, I feel the angled flange and manifold both need some opening up ImageIMG_20160307_122638_041 by moleadrian, on Flickr There is a lot of metal to come from the manifold to turbo flange as this looks quite restrictive and also could do with some knife-edging inside too, I would like to port match the the head but time could be against this at present and I would also wind up do it again, when the new head is ported fully, so seems a bit of a waste of time to do now and not the easiest job to do right with the engine still in the car, but I will check it and if it's going to be an just a tickle in the exhaust manifold ports, it will get done at fitment. I'm not going to mess with the head whilst it's in the car, as it's difficult to get at properly and who knows were the swarf could wind up. ImageIMG_20160307_122415_252 by moleadrian, on Flickr The angled flange could also be opened up and smoothed out a tad to improve the transistion for the gases from the manifold through into turbo housing ImageIMG_20160307_122425_190 by moleadrian, on Flickr
At least that turbine housing is better than the smaller td04hl housings, here's a comparison Image
got lucky there then, didn't know the angle flanges differed like that.....every days a school day, as they say....:) then again am I, the smaller looking one has a much nicer direct flow into the turbine housing on a second look

Post 797808 by Dangerous Dave on 2016-03-08 00:55:00

Think the bigger one is the 7cm2 housing and the smaller one is a 6cm2 housing. Problem with the smaller one is it doesn't match the output from the exhaust manifold (on the more open japanifolds and s60r manifolds), that tight neck closing in quickly I guess wouldn't help (but then I don't know anything about flow and restrictions, etc LOL)

I might get the lads on the shot blast to freshen the manifold up looks wise and then give it a nice coat UHT paint when I get home. I am considering making some form of crude flow bench just so I can see how much difference there is between the japanifold and the s60r item if there's time to compare them.

Molesport Engineering been busy again and completed the new 3" exhaust flange ready for the down pipe modification to allow it to fit the angle flange. Started as a roughed out blank. Bit of grinding and polishing sorted, but not sure whether these bits will make it on to the car for shakey next weekend, the pic's of the finished items aren't the best, but I'll try to get some better ones before fitment. Current Japanifold (modded) v standard item Image S60r ImageIMG_20160324_095824_432 by moleadrian, on Flickr so other than some port sharing there's not much difference in them now they're both knife edged internally, may look at somehow making a flow rig to measure them later on, but flow is one thing, making power on the dyno can be a totally different thing.
you've got to get them fitted before Shakespeare, interested to see how it all goes with the 15g
That will all depend on access to the tig welder as we are on factory shutdown at present and the downpipe will need modification to suit the angled flange, even if these bits don't get on for the first race, they should be on for the next one. Times should improve at shakey as we've done a 14.3 at york and shakey is definitely far more grippy, but I don't think it will give the full 0.4sec improvement I'm looking for.

Well it's time to sort the Olive out for her mot, which was due a few months back, but I parked her up for a while. So time to sort the front arch liners and bumper alignment/attachment as they didn't like it last year and whilst I'm in there pop the new oil cooler on, change the exhaust manifold and turbo exhaust housing, all bits aare done and ready to fit for the dv re-circulation so that will go on too. Thinking about also doing a pcv delete and plumbing in a nice catch tank in place of it, if I can decide where to mount it that I'm happy with. I'm also going to remove the nivomats from the rear and replace with the fk's that I had off of Colin some years back, these should stiffen the rear on end compared to how she is now, would have fitted these years ago but I like the way I could seriously load the car and 1/2 a mile down the road alls level and no one as a clue how much weight I'm carrying, but after watching a few vid's of my 1/4 starts something has to be done to address the rear end squat and bc's are out of the question at present unfortunately, so will have to stay on the wish list a while longer

M.O.T. Update.........failed.......then passed........lol Tbf it wasn't much really and was sorted before I even check to see if it had passed online. Failed on wipers not clearing the screen fully, stop lamp not working and one headlight out of alignment. It's funny how the brake light was working fine on arrival to the testers (Jayne was following and could see them all working) and the wipers where clearing the drizzle nicely on the way over there. oh well cheap ticket for another years fun and a new set of bosch wipers all for £75 notes so I can't really grumble. One advisory on a small leak on a power steering joint.

Well after living with them for quite a while, the knackered engine stabilizer bushes have now all been replaced with some custom made items I've knocked up, as and when I've had the time over the past few months, although I see them as a success in my book they are a tad on the harsh side from a vibration point of view. That said I already have an idea to make a mk2 version with a softer insert to reduce the vibration to a more acceptable level. Whilst I was at it I also changed the front engine mounting for a standard item, with the idea of using the old one to develop a new mounting with a replaceable insert which will be durable enough to cope with the abuse this car gets off the start line, whilst this is just an idea in my head at present so who knows if it will ever happen ( there's a lot of ideas floating around up there at present and I'm not very good at making the time to do them....lol) ???? Been a while since the last update, so time to put that right and share a few pic's etc with you all. Starting with a motoring disaster when I pulled over to make room for an inconsiderate road user that just had to force his way through and caught a wheel on a nasty bit of road edge break up, that I had never noticed before in my daily runs down that country lane, looked like I got away with just a damaged tyre.....WRONG!!! Image20160911_104848 by moleadrian, on Flickr Image20160911_104838 by moleadrian, on Flickr and had a little time to play with the exhaust system, the 15g now is fitted with an ported and polished angled flange exhaust housing and mounted on a S60R manifold, which has had the collector end opened up and ported to match the angled flange. The turbo has also had an adjustable actuator fitted (thanks to P.Fandango) Image20160911_153750 by moleadrian, on Flickr Image20160911_163006 by moleadrian, on Flickr Image20160911_163019 by moleadrian, on Flickr obviously the exhaust system would need changing to fit the angled flange setup, so I made a flange to mate to the turbo and got a couple of stainless bends so I could modify the 3" downpipe I bought off Volvostorm a while back along with the rest of his 3" system, a bit of cutting and tacking till I got the fit nice (not a lot of the original dp left), then tig'd up the joints and on she went along with all the other intake bits that had been removed Image2016-10-02_04-40-28 by moleadrian, on Flickr Image2016-10-02_04-40-49 by moleadrian, on Flickr

Unfortunately after the car was re-assembled and taken out for a shakedown run I got a bit carried away and bent a rod accelerating away from a junction, probably over did it on the spring choice in the actuator, even though the mbc was wound right off. New exhaust sounds lovely and did draw a bit of attention from the locals when going out on the test run. I'm looking at making up a level sensor unit for the tank and getting a boss welded to the tank to take it, but plenty of time for that after the engine rebuild or swap, as I'm not sure on which route I'm taking yet, but it has to be done for March and the new drag racing season.

Sorry about the rod. With the tank if it's an Ally Fab one then take care with the breather as they tend to go very deep in to the tank so can syphen. Also the tanks can corrode very badly with methanol due to the grade of metal.

Post 814497 by MoleT-5R on 2017-10-24 11:22:31

Well time flies and I've not done the update I promised so here we go, The new gauging equipment was installed ready for when she returned to the road and spring rate in the actuator taken back 2 springs and then the mbc was slowly worked back up. I am also now able to effectively monitor my exhaust gas temperatures and afr's in car now, with added benefit of the aem afr gauge data logging the afr,rpm and boost pressures for me to review on the laptop at my leisure. This has revealed that the car was over fueling on it's blues with the 3.8 bar fuel pressure regulator, which was then promptly swapped back to a standard 3.0 bar item improving the fueling greatly and making the car feel even more responsive. With this all looking much better I moved on and switched on the Water/Meth kit which, even on a basic setup, seems to having made the car a lot smoother in mid to high rev/boost conditions (as it should do). Aem Failsafe afr Gauge was installed into the pillar pod of the old boost gauge (which is much nicer than the old cheapo one),It is currently configured with the boost reading on the central digits and afr on the led bar around the outside of the gauge, but I'm considering swapping that about to make the afr easier to read, now that I know that the boost pressure is holding nicely throughout the rev range. The red led is the remote error warning lamp for the Water/Meth kit and flashes a number of times dependent on the fault encountered. ImageIMG-20170809-WA0010 by moleadrian, on Flickr The exhaust gas temperature gauge has been installed in a din radio blank and allows room for expansion for other gauges etc, a nice bit of kit and I've stayed with Aem for this, it can be set with high and low warnings and will store peak temperature, which is quite high on a car with a small turbo, but the Meth kit does reduce those high peak temps by a noticeable amount. The addition shortly of some intake temp gauges will also be of a benefit to trying to reduce these a bit more. ImageIMG-20170809-WA0013 by moleadrian, on Flickr The 3" downpipe has needed a small amount of modification to take the new sensors for egt's and wideband afr's ( I must add that the shiny bits on either end are my handwork and the dull bit in the middle is all that remains of Volvostorm's old 3" downpipe, which I'm looking at chopping out and replacing with a straight section when it's next off for any length of time) Image20170812_100910 by moleadrian, on Flickr I was getting a little mess from the filter on my crank breather, so I popped a catch can in to take care of that and provide a nice mounting point for the mbc on the custom bracket I made for it. The plumbing to both catch can and mbc are temporary and will be replaced with some colour co-ordinated braided hose at some point, as will the green wire that acts as the rpm trigger for the Aem arf gauge, which needs tidying up and a bit better protection. ImageIMG-20170829-WA0030 by moleadrian, on Flickr ImageIMG-20170829-WA0028 by moleadrian, on Flickr Well road testing to setup target boost pressure has seen the old bailey DV get the boot and JamesT5R's Forge Motorsport item installed with a reduced spring rate to what he was running, whilst upping the mbc to achieve target boost it was apparent the actuator spring rate needed to be changed to a green spring and then worked up to achieve my target 18-20 psi. Next was to run at Shakey for the end of September meet and we planned to run both days and be there from Friday night, Saturday although slow to start and had loads of incident downtime. Finally we got in 4 decent runs in, all being 14.1's and the best being 104.28 mph over the line. That was a great start to the weekend as this was a new PB over the 14.3 which we got last time out at york 2015 ?? I think. Some more was going to be needed, so in true Judgeninja style the boot floor and back seats came out...!!! The tired old rear nivomats were replaced with some FK shocks I had off of claymore 5 years ago, But never got around to fitting. Well Sunday was to prove even better and after a wet start we finally got running just after 1 o'clock with a 14.0 @ 107.83mph, banging on the 13's door, more had to be available if only the drive could get it all to hook up right and it did one the very next run, with a 13.4 @104.3 and then 6 further 13 second runs in the afternoon to back it up out of the 10 runs in total on Sunday can't be bad. So where next then, Shakey for the last rwyb this year and to set a 13 second time with the seats in this time and then to try and beat my PB (oh and beating Woody....now that would be a laugh, wouldn't it). I have got a new rear suspension setup that hopefully should be finished in time for the racing and an update to follow on that after we've tested it out. Well wish me luck Guys I'm still trying the impossible with a 15g..........

Well in the post on the same day as the last update were the new temperature gauges, 1 in blue for the intake and 1 in red for the throttle body, I also picked up a new rear exhaust bracket and a couple of new rear bumper brackets. I fitted the new exhaust bracket and then realised that I should have fitted the bumper brackets first, as now the exhaust is back in it's correct position the bumper is now sitting on it due to the bumper sag as the brackets have completely rotted away, It is in need of some fair TLC under the rear end, but no time left to sort that before the racing this weekend. Well it has been a while since the last update, thought I'd better let you know how I got on. Olive did very well and pulled a 13.8 with all standard trim fitted in the car on the Saturday, but with spills and an accident holding up proceedings, runs were limited and were also limited on Sunday too, with most of us only getting 3 runs in the day, so no real practice time to get into the groove and get a good run. We didn't get to try the new solid shocks as all time was spent queuing for our limited number of runs on both days. Although I managed to beat Tim Williams on the Sunday, he got me back in the return race with an awesome 13.2. Since then Olive has just been my daily as and when I've needed her and is awaiting a pre season overhaul to sort some niggles and fit the new sensors. New wings would be nice but finding anything the right colour that isn't fully of rot, seems very unlikely, so new fronts will be required, but that then means paint so will be a big job and other stuff should be done at the same time, so that will wait a while longer before she gets a full going over. So here's a few shots from shakey and some from The Mad Welshman who got some shots from a different angle to what I normally have. Well naughty car yesterday morning, whilst overtaking a slow moving van, I experienced what seemed like fuel starvation. I got passed ok and continued on with caution, but the car was struggling if I pressed the throttle but made it to work, which was another 5 miles. The fuel gauge was dropping alarmingly quick also. Work over I returned to see what was up with her and fired her up, Idle was fluctuating a lot and when driven the afr's went very rich 10's - 8's on light throttle. Stoppped for some shopping and decided to unplug the Lambda senor to see if this helped. Idle returned to normal and the drive was improved, Afr's rose to 11.5's - 9's but still eating fuel I think. I hope to check the codes tonight it time will allow, but just guessing the Lambda sensor has gone.

Right new flash code reader has been manufactured and the codes read and reset. In the days in between the maf was swapped out as well as the lambda sensor, as a stab in the dark cure, which at first appeared to be an improvement, then not so sure and now runs ok, although a full run has not been performed yet (what fun that will be on the way to work this coming monday morning at 5'o clock). Right codes and explainations in order of logging... 3-1-1 vehicle speed sensor missing ......lol no front abs wiring for a while now ...coming soon but in v70 form to eliminate the nasty wiring connector on the strut 1-2-1 Maf....was unplugged at some point or could be something new ???? think this was way back tbh 4-1-4 Turbo boost pressure too high (haynes) lol .... it's at atmospheric pressure as i run a mbc 2-4-5 IAC closing signal faulty or missing.... unplugged during initial investigations 2-2-3 IAC opening signal faulty or missing.... unplugged during initial investigations oh well its not likely to be those above, as I'm able to explain them all, so time to drive and see what returns, although I am tempted to try a replacement crank sensor, but will see what happens on the next run, as she's idling nicely on the drive tonight whilst reading the codes and clearing them, only one way to find out.....

The O2 sensor could be faulty without throwing a code. How old is it?

Post 815481 by MoleT-5R on 2018-02-05 04:46:16

Well over ten years old, as I have never changed it in my ownership of the car as far as I can recall, I could dig back through the very comprehensive wad of invoices and have look if the previous owner had it changed, as he'd spent a small fortune on maintaining the car.

Could be dodgy then. You got a spare you can throw in? So how did it do this morning?
Could be dodgy then. You got a spare you can throw in? So how did it do this morning?
Already swapped the lambda....sort of improvement. This mornings run was better, but is now steering me to looking for a boost leak, Mil is back on so some fresh codes to read, when I get back tonight.

Well 121 is back , so the swapped in MAF may by iffy, so will have to find another. 311 is back but no surprise there though

Brake servo pipe can cause air leaks, worth checking
Brake servo pipe can cause air leaks, worth checking
Yep they can, not long replaced the one-way valve in the line whilst chasing a boost issue that I never really got to pin point the cause of, but it went so happy days....:)

Post 815503 by MoleT-5R on 2018-02-07 21:07:16

Right then.....All back to normal, suspected boost leak found on one of the only 2 joints that don't where mikalor pipe clamps, which was missed as when my home made custom rip pipes were fitted at york raceway a couple of years back, I didn't have anything to trim the fan/radiator cowl back, so used the original clip. Well the cowl is now modified to allow the last remaining mikalor clip to be fitted and thing are running fine again.......A word to the wise for people with similar issues, I ran around in the car for about 3 days, limping here and there, so when then pipework was refitted and the engine run, It does take a fair while for the ecu to get itself back to normal (no mil lamp on last run and only 4-1-4 and 2-2-1 stored and not relevant) but slowly and surely she returned to normal idle and is as responsive as before, just needs a full shakedown run in the next day or 2, to fully confirm were are totally back to normal, not that I have any doubts on that now. Image Image Whilst the pipes where been played with, I thought it was a good time to fit the intake temperature sensors in to the intake pipe (blue) and just in front for the throttle body (red), wiring and internal installation to be completed in the next couple of days when it's warmer..? Update time... Olive is still soldiering on even with the knocking, but unfortunately managed to break the O/S rear disc from the drum, which was a bit of a drama, as the caliper retaining bolts had rounded over and required a bit of work to remove. Solution was to turn out the insides of some larger nuts and slip them over the rounded bolt heads, then weld them on, which has the added benefit of adding plenty of heat and larger surface area for a bigger spanner, thus the bolts where removed and the disc replaced. Then the N/S front caliper decided to seize on just before the VT rolling for Day at Sharks Dyno, this was not good and which took some work to get moving nicely again, as time was short and a full strip down impossible. Early start on Sunday for the trip up to Mansfield from Mid-Wales, a quick 5th gear full power run on a very quiet stubble field, gave me the confidence that the rollers weren't going to kill her. Well she did me proud and returned an awesome 301.8bhp and a mighty 521nm of torque, not bad for a 15g powered car, with the impending installation of the 4.4 ecu and some datalogging in the near future, we may be able to extract a bit more from her before the york meet hopefully. My installation of my intake temperature gauges did fair as well unfortunately but more on that later as a vid is uploading a present. All in all things are progress still and it was lovely to get olive out for a long run, she drank a fair amount of fuel to make the trip, but it is hard to resist squeezing the loud pedal with all that torque to play with. https://lm.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DcxqHknE04Hw%26list%3DPLgBu_AR4SPt48e3oUM-ZJakqDkbMmXYLa%26sns%3Dfb&h=ATN0PwRATDuRT2xfPpsy9IdhN-3R3ZwNZA3OgOjwCzdnygkUZALYsjulJ7XIIdytbAzougH6NQyXNbTy12yxU2ryp-bik4QWyv80Ovorzqu-bw

Post 817843 by MoleT-5R on 2018-12-07 09:12:01

A year end summary ..... not much of any significance has really happened this year and there's not much to encourage me at present, since the drag racing stopped. At present I'm sitting back and trying to decide in which direction to focus my motorsport efforts, I have many options here to build, but it is difficult to build something to be an all round car, rather than a dedicated single discipline car. I'd like to do some hillclimbs and sprints, possibly some track days too, I don't think ( I know ) I couldn't afford to circuit race, my as I like to have a go, as funds won't allow that to happen at present. Also Olive needs to stay as a road car, as T-5R prices are creeping upwards, so it would be a crime to strip her out to cage her etc, so I will carry on with modifying her for the road and keeping her looking standardish. Olive to be honest has performed well this year with no real issues, apart from some body rot near the front subframe mounting points, thus her mot appointment was rapidly cancelled as this would without doubt be an mot failure, so no point in sending her until I have been underneath with the welder and plated the areas concerned. So now side lined till the new year, when hopefully I will find some time to so sort her ready for spring/summer. She will be attending VT600 whatever, as she will be travelling there on a trailer, as I'm aiming to take 4 Volvo's for the event, all being well.

Post 818886 by MoleT-5R on 2019-08-18 12:54:30

Update time, where has the year gone already.... VT600 has been and gone, luckily I didn't take olive as it tbh, as it turned out to be a real shambles imho (ok on the upside, it did make a load of money for charity, but that's about all) and in all honesty, the clutch would have most probably have killed my leg before the end of the day, as most that have tried it can tell you...its Very Heavy...lol Moving forward we have a trip to Santa Pod coming up on the weekend of the 28th of September, so it's time to brush off the cobwebs and try to up the power once more, as I need to push the boundaries a tad further and beat my personal best of 13.4, so looking to mapping improvements and weight loss to help here. Possibly some new rubber to make as much use of there sticky track as I can as the slicks I used last time (lent to me by Mr Tim Williams, A big thank you sir) did little extra than to level the playing field between us on reflection, but I can complain as we ran steady 13.6's for most of the day. So time to pull the finger out and get going, turbo will be staying as 15g for this meet and hopefully it will yet again surprise a few on how rapid it is!! I can't wait to get back behind the wheel of olive, as she has been parked up for almost a year now and I really miss her, Gul is a lovely car, don't get me wrong, but there is nothing nearly as fun as olive to be hooning about in.

Post 820227 by MoleT-5R on 2020-08-13 01:34:20

Still parked up..........but now on greens and 3" maf, which according to the afr look to have settled in well, but only a bit of datalogging will really tell, possibility of a bit of hillclimbing on the horizon if the reg's allow it to run, but enough of a buzz to get going again on pushing her forward and possibly going for an mot to get some road testing done at last.
That's amazing. One question about the thread, as a new comer could you see all the pictures, as many of them are hosted by photobucket and they stopped the third party hosting at one point (there was a work around at one point), somebody mentioned recently that they where able to see the pictures again and was wondering what you found as you went back through my thread....???
