If you don't do it now (with all the spare time you have) maybe you won't ever....give it a go I say mate and good luck to you.

go for it! Not exactly the same but I've worked contract since i was 16...tried a permanent staff job once, now back contracting. I'm still working for The Man i guess but more flexible and that has got to be a good thing. It would be a good idea to get a business plan together and take it to the Small & Medium business section of your bank if they have one, Barclays do or did anyway. Even if you are not after a loan you'll need a business account and they'll have some good advice in general.

Go for it mate. Thought about doing it myself for a while for much the same reasons as you, the boss gets rich off the knowledge and skill of his workers whilst possessing none of his own !. Have you looked into 3d printing for prototype work ? The machines themselves aren't that expensive (even cheaper if you build it yourself) and there is a big community built up around them.

Mate of mine was involved in an industrial accident not dissimilar to yours a few years ago. He eventually got paid out and used the money to start his own business and so far he's doing well. Sometimes a lot of people with good ideas and ambition lack the funds or dare not take the risk to start a new venture. Hopefully you should get a bit of well deserved coin as a result of your accident and that can be used for some good in giving you a bit of help getting started.
