Other than cars and bikes...what are your hobbies?

Weirdly I found myself wondering what the members do when they aren't on here, at work or spending time with their cars. (Or bikes).
So guys (and gals), what are your hobbies? Current hobbies, past hobbies and even hobbies you are looking to take up? Do these hobbies in some way connect with your passion for cars (or bikes)? How much time do you get to enjoy your hobbies?
Many of us may share hobbies, some may already be experienced in something someone else wants to take up and can guide them.
Outside of cars I generally engage in two hobbies at the moment. I like to go cycling, off road is preferred but I'll take any type I can as long as it's out doors. (Non of that cycling in the gym stuff for me, if I can't fall off and hurt myself I'm not interested!) It was a hobby I didn't have much time for until I moved recently (advantages of living on a nature reserve) and I'm really enjoying it again! It doesn't really connect with my passion for cars other than I like getting out and riding/driving for the sake of it helps me clear my head :)
My other hobby is photography. I'm not that good at it but I'll keep pushing and pushing and one day I will produce something I can be very proud of! I find photography a great way of combining my technical and logical skills and thought processes with my desire to express myself in an artistic way. I tend to focus on different areas of photography periodically and mostly this year I've being focusing on the controlling of light in outdoor studio scenarios and taking shots of cars. I also want to focus on getting seriously sharp high contrast mono's, basically I've looking at creating stills with the same feel that SinCity was filmed in. Unfortunately I've not yet managed to dedicate as much time to this hobby as I'd like but as things settle down I hope to dedicate more. I have quite a few friends that do photography for a living that help me with this hobby.
I used to do a lot of MMA but its something I dropped a few years ago due to time. I found it a great way to focus the mind, release the days tension and a great way of keeping fit. It's something I wouldn't mind taking up again. (Nothing to do with cars...........unless I were to get car jacked I suppose).
Technology used to be a hobby of mine but now one of the things I do professionally is being a technologist, I've tended to see this area as more a "means to an end" rather than something I do for myself.

Didn't know you did MMA, I did Lau Gar for a good few years.
Currently:
Horses (We have five with a sixth on the way, one is in foal).
RC cars and helis (I keep toying with buying an Airplane/Glider too).
Cycling (Road and MTB).
Gaming (PC, PS3 and Xbox 360..I'll be getting the Xbox One in a few weeks and probably PS4 at some point if/when anything worth buying it for comes out).
Photography.
I don't know where I find the time for all of the above lol

I have an unhealthy obsession with RC planes, boats and cars.
Particularly with getting them to go faster than they were perhaps designed to do so.
Don't have any planes at the moment as I crashed the last one in high winds and blew (no pun intended) £130 in the 5 seconds it was in the air. It was a really nice place too. Soul destroying. I still haven't recovered from it yet............
My current toy is a twin motor single prop Anderson speed boat purchased off ebay for a few pound. Its rapid but trying to make it faster....... as usual. Waiting on a higher voltage electronic speed controlling working its way from China to give it some more beans :)

I don't know anything about quadcopters lol sorry..they look great though and easy to fly from what i've heard (unlike regular RC Helis), thought about one to stick a GoPro on but never got round to it.

It was a poly bag job getting all the 'bits' home. All the rc gear was fine though and that's were most of the money is I suppose.
Post 643125 by Pinup_gal on 2013-09-11 09:46:22
Ermmm I suppose my hobbies (some) are a bit stereo typical of a wife and mother. I love upcycling and sewing for the home. Shabby Chic is a passion at the moment. I'm after a cable drum at the moment for a project so if anyone has one or knows where I can get one I'd be extremely grateful.
Photography : Definitely a hobby, I'd like to be way better than I am. I'd rather shoot vintage style set ups/people/old cars. I've grown bored of shooting cars at cars shows, this is more due to shed loads of people with camera phones thinking they can walk in front of you *sigh*
Vintage: Yup it's a hobby, hair styles, makeup, clothing.....I actually would rather turn this hobby into a business.
Chris I'd love to see pics of the foal when she/he is born!!

I used to play rugby for a local team but didn't like getting up early to run about in the mud and rain and after they banned spear tackles, it lost it's appeal.
Did downhill and x-country mountain biking for a bit, built my own bike, crashed it a few times and sold it for parts.
Muay Thai boxing, Chinese Kickboxing, Judo and Shotokan Karate were a bit of fun for a few years, I used to train with a couple of mates, one of which is now a stuntman and does appearances as spiderman and Wolverine for Marvell Europe and pulls loads of fit birds lol.
Photography has been a quiet little interest of mine since I was about 10, had a couple of prints displayed in a local gallery but there's no time or money to take it up properly, I'm more of a happy-snapper with a reasonable eye for a picture.
I've built a few computers, my current machine held the 3DMark 11 record for processor/gfx combination for over a year. Networking isn't really my forte but I can make standalone machines go rather well.
These days, the only hobby I really have any time for (other than faffing about with cars) is fishing. Beach fishing mainly but I will go off a pier when the mood takes me. I don't do well on boats lol.

Hobbies & interests (this is the sort of thing you put on a CV to make you look less like a sociopath/serial killer......)
In the winter I got into snowboarding although I don't do it regularly enough to say it was a hobby. The place I am working now is pretty flat so not much chance.
Games Workshop - making the figures for the bairn, painting stuff. I like to make stuff up to do for the little fella, like home experiments – finding out how much weight an egg can hold etc. It started off from ‘I’m bored Dad’, now it is a routine every time we are together.
Some fencing courses were running at my old school so I gave it a go, I used to do this when I was younger. Not buying and selling stolen goods (well maybe a little) but fighting with not very sharp swords. You just can't beat whacking someone with a stick in the name of sport.
Nordic walking....that is walking with sticks. Good exercise, I try to meet up with a few people to do this in the Durham area every so often.
Swimming I like and go quite regularly. Also the gym too about 4 times a week - currently trying a 12 week plan from Men's Fitness magazine. I’m not a fitness fanatic and don't look like one but try to keep in reasonable shape for work and the Ukrainian girl I one day hope to meet :D
Photoshop or rather photoscape I am trying to get some skills in. I take really rubbish photos and was trying to improve by changing the lighting & applying filters etc.
Shooting/archery love any kind of activity like this, used to be quite good at it but eye sight pretty rubbish now. Used to go clay pigeon shooting but I prefer something a little more accurate. I am after an old Theoben Rapid 7 rifle to relive my bolt action glory days without needing a firearms cert.
Animals - most favourite pet was my ferret Sally years and years ago, currently have part-care of two disabled cats. When me & Sally used to go rabbiting she thought it was a game…..sob. The good lady and I used to help out recently with an animals charity in Russia. My father also works at place which has a small cat & dog shelter on its grounds so occasionally visit that.
Bowling, currently a member of a league.
Trying my hand at electronics, a little bit of soldering although that is car-related. My education after school was Mechanical and Chemical but I found I had an interest in control systems (industrial process I mean) so that sort of led me into being interested in what goes on inside those little ECUs.
I keep trying to learn different languages and found I am rubbish at them – so far tried French, German, Dutch, Norwegian and currently trying to avoid learning Russian. Kazakh next. Better practice my English first.
Other stuff apart from cars….er…this is difficult…….sex, alcohol, oh MUSIC I like very much, particularly live bands. That is one of the few things I have in common with our lass – she likes live music also. Sector Gaza and Leningrad two very good bands although the lyrics can be a bit offensive to some/most…good job I understand very little. Favourite radio stations are Bob’s ska radio and BBC 6 music especially the late night Jukebox. The Moulettes are probably my favourite the moment who are neither Ska nor played on the BBC very much. Since I travel quite a lot I try and go to see concerts where I can, unknown bands like Margaret Thatcher and the 7 Dwarves or something in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Russia) or big stuff like Mumiy Troll in Glasgow or the Red Hot Chili Peppers in St Petersburg. I went to see that alone cos I was in the area – epic.
Stunning all of them! Love the lil shetland. I haven't ridden since I was like 9, still have my rosette somewhere from the gymkhana the pony club did lol
Thanks, the first pic makes me chuckle as they all come running to the whistle.
We only had two at first and that was the way it was going to stay! but one would sulk if you took the other away (for a ride or to a show) so we got the shetlands to keep company.
Then we put the best of the two original ones to a good stud horse ...so ended up with five (the foal is following in her mums footsteps showing, doing very well in hand).
Very much looking forward to number six coming along.
:)

I had a go at horse riding last year......I've ridden motorbikes & 4x4s offroad but nothing so scary as sitting on a horse, expecting a trot and getting a gallop. Painful too I just stood in the stirrups or whatever you call them eventually

My hobbies are Body boarding with my 11 year old daughter whilst my 3 year old son and wife play on the beach, my daughter started with a cheap board and I thought that looks fun so got us each a wet suit and decent board and fins etc great fun keeps me fit, only thing is my 3 year old thought he was missing out so he now has a wet suit and body board also :slap:
So we have regular visits to Scarborough to the beach, fortunatly my mother in law lives in Scarborough so is good for over night stop overs when the weather is good.

My hobbies other than messing about with cars are mainly photography and astronomy. Have done a bit of astrophotography too and am trying to get more involved in that.
Also mountain biking over the south and north downs, my PS3 and Xbox. Most of time is taken up with work but i am trying my hardest to get a better balance of life vs work.

I'm not short, about 5' 11'/180 cm I think, and the horse I had a go on was well taller than me. I'm sitting there trotting along through the snow on a white horse (Prince Charming I thought), then Mrs Horse's pals tear past with all the girls who have been to gymkhana since age 9 standing in the saddle on one leg etc
So of course next thing that happens is I am at full pelt on this half-tonne white charger, who is ignoring any requests to slow up through the little piece of thread I mean the reins....
Great fun, probably doing about 30 mph and ££££ting myself :D

I used to muay thai box for many years, reaching grade red, but due to work commitments and following another path of enjoyment i became a motorbike instructor which then led onto curcuit instructor.
Now i do alot of cycling, both MTB and road, i always take a bicycle away with me if its for more than 2 weeks as i am normally near a race track so i use these facilities, I've cycled the Nurburgring approx 20 times over the years when its closed to traffic.
and XBOX.. whilst the wife is at dancing.

Not really had time for hobbies for a while now, I love drawing and painting, digital painting is my new favourite as it's so versatile. In the past I've partially built a large scale Rc Ducted fan F-14 but I've only gotten as far as building the body from scratch, I'll finish it one day. Other interests are movies, cars (obviously), Playstation (considering getting a four when they come out) and in the past I was mad on airbrush painting.

Generally play alot on the computer at the moment I'm playing alot of DOTA2 used to mod for a few SOE forums back in my MMO days which had pretty much made me imune to any gross act or image compared to gaming forums the drama on this forum is weak.
Other than that sampling the flavours of the local ale establishment and going the cinema, cant beat gold class.
Also I like to tinker with anything technological and keep up to date on current developments. I used to teach my self various programming languages although since utilising this in my job I have lost the enthusiasm in it.
I enjoy building new computers and helping people spec up systems to a budget by reading reviews and comparisons to find the best bang per buck performance.
I also meet up with a group of friends I game with, every year we attaned the Eurogamer Expo in London.

1. RC planes - My main hobby is radio control planes (building and flying), and some of the associated interests that come with it such as aerial photography, FPV flying, automation.
2. Music - I play several instruments (drums, guitar, violin). I play in a band (on the drums). I also like to write music (new or arrange) and so I have an interest in music technology (Cubase, midi instruments, etc).
3. Computing - Software development is what makes me a living, but it's also a hobby.
4. Astronomy - I enjoy observing the heavens and occasionally dabble in some astro-photography, but it's a very time consuming hobby and even more restrictive than RC flying in terms of suitable weather.
5. Photography - Don't often get a chance, but I do enjoy going for scenic walks with the DSLR. I'm planning on getting a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone so I can have near-DSLR quality photos even if I don't have a DSLR with me.
Oh and cars aren't a hobby for me.

Recent hobbies - none... I realised this a few months ago when I sat I front of the TV for a whole weekend once..
Previous hobbies:
Archery - Recurve shooter since the age of 12 then went back after a gap of 6yrs and did a "All the gear no Idea" sort of purchase. I bought top of the tange stuff before working out that is was all wrong. Then spent the next 2years gradually swapping and replacing bits. highlight was a few Gold medals in the Island Games team events, but nothing too spectacular individually. If I restarted I'd shoot compound.
Cycling - but limit myself to max 10miles or so.
Dogs - showed old English sheepdogs and Chihuahua's at various levels.
Games Workshop - painting and playing as a student
Swimming - had most if the life saving awards in the 90's, but now just recreational stuff.
Digital editing - nowhere as good as the professional stuff, but I give it a go when I'm bored to see how far I can push my skills in video/photos.
Been using the gym for the last 11 months 3 times a week. Next week booked in with the instructor as I have a goal I really want to reach which will involve some serious commitment and will power along with changing my whole diet. I class this as a hobby now as it will be atleast 4 times a week soon.
I got this book Mike, alright the cover is a bit embarassing to carry round but some good info in there about diet for training.

I've just thought of another thing I like to do: cooking. The other week I made the the bairn some gyoza dumplings cos he likes them when we go for a sushi, and last night made some shortbread for our lass. She said that's awful, too sweet.....so I took them into work and the Scottish lads are making it disappear fast while calling me a homo etc

Don't watch any TV anymore. Anything worth watching I've got on dvd.
PS is still dead from last year, which is annoying as I'm still half way through Assassins Creed Revelations. Gotta get it fixed pronto though as GTA V is out soon, and you won't see me for months. :)

Did a bit of dinghy sailing for a while until I nearly sank on Coniston. Kinda lost my nerve a bit - sold up.
For the longest time I was seriously into kayaking - anything really, white water, playboating, surfing and polo. After a time I picked up some injuries in my shoulder. Kayaking was how I got into a Volvo. Not using roof racks - i.e. sticking everything including a mate, 2 boats etc meant I could get to the water faster & with less hassle - plus you can get changed inside the car.
I still have my boat & paddles - but like diving and other actions sports it is difficult to do safely on your own. Currently I am also too heavy for my boat.
I got into dancing around 2007 (currently taking a break from it). Mostly I dance modern jive (regular at Ceroc meetings) & have also done argentine tango and west coast swing. I've won a couple of comps - nothing serious. These days I do it more socially. Originally I did it to meet & dance with girls, but now I am married I prefer dancing with Ellen - but it's difficult to get baby sitters.
I like 10 pin bowling but again I don't know anyone locally I can go regularly with, so despite having all the gear I am sadly out of practice. I did bowl a lot in Holland.
Does learning a foreign language count - I learnt dutch & passed exams etc - maar sinds 2010 heb ik thuisgewerkt in Engeland dus heb ik geen oefenen gemaarkt. Hij is gewoon slecht.

The only fault is in the operator lol. This was only £70 & bought to get used to using a 4 channel controller. They are easy with practise but for a novice I certainly wouldn't expect to fly it straight away without issue. My main problem is rotation, once it turns around & facing u you've got to remember if u want it to go to the left away from an obstruction u need to go right with the control as its facing the opposite direction to u

Nice one Dave, Dutch is a HARD language. At least it was for me just to even try it......I got as far as 'danke val' ('thank you' - I hope)
Our lass tried to teach me dancing and gave up after a couple of attempts. Now I just fight with the guys who want to dance with her instead. It's a form of dancing and also combines learning new languages - 'pashol von' is '££££ off' and 'zacroi past' is super offensive for 'be quiet please' in Russian. A damn good swearing language

I've booked the week off work to really get myself to grips with the PS4. First games ill be playing is Watchdogs, Driveclub and Assassins Creed Black Flag.

Sorry - back on topic...
I forgot to mention, I used to rebuild and tune air weapons, mainly rifles. My own personal toy was a BSA goldstar 10 shot repeater which could fold a 2p in half from 100M away. It peaked 1360 feet per second with 18gr domed pellets - 36ft/lb. I had to fit a multibaffle silencer as it sounded like .22 rimfire. Had custom grip moulded to my hand with an inset button to activate the laser for close range shots (mum had a rat problem in the garden). I also had an array of slingshots, crossbows and CO2 powered pistols.
Hmmm... all the hallmarks of a serial killer...

Nope, don't have the time lol
I may not have any hobbies but i have many interests that include extreme meteorolgy, seismology, volcanology, astronomy, religion, history/archeology (lots of thngs that end in y). I'v got hours of documentaries on these types of things recorded. I bought a dvd box set at the start of the year, from the history channel called mega disasters which has 25hours of documentaries on it, and i still haven't managed to watch all of it.
I have just got "God is not great" by christopher hitchins, which i want to read, plus i need to re-read "the god delusion" (richard dawkins) and "the end of faith" (sam harris), because they have so much in them that reading them once just isn't enough.
I'm interested in audio equipment too and really enjoy having a few drinks and listening to music.
I suppose i would like to start weight training again, but it takes a lot of time and discipline to really make it work, not to mention it costs a lot to eat the right foods and get the supplements.

My hobbies are walking, I love going walking on the beach by my rents caravan. It's a good hike to the end of the bay if you can avoid the sinking sand. I do love anything car related but am a bit of a geek when it comes to science, engineering & historical engineering such as steam trains & mills from the industrial revolution.
I'm keen on aerospace industry & also films, documentarys & music. I have a very odd music variety from limp bizcuit to oasis to the prodigy. Lol
In addition to those media genres I also enjoy setting up sound systems in cars or houses, I have an ear for quality according to a few mates over the years but I don't think they have a clue really.
Like I said I'm a geek. Lol

Thank you is either in 2 forms -
Dank je wel ("Dank ye vel") - which is familiar or
Dank u wel ("Dank ooo vel") - which is more formal.
I can say cheers in about 18 different languages.
Finnish is the hardest European language to learn. Dutch, English & German all come from the same lower Germanic language base - so there is quite a lot of overlap between all of them. In fact Anglo saxon looks a lot like Dutch.
If I am ever up in Durham & there's a class on - maybe your lass can save me a dance - so long as you don't want to punch me as well?

Hmmm - Gas guns were something I never got into. Although Theoben used to make gas rams that would replace the standard spring in most guns (my BSA had an OX No. 1 spring, padded and weighted) the ram pressure could be adjusted with Nitrogen but I'd seen a few people blow the compression chamber in half through over doing it. Most gas guns see a 30% improvement in power just by running 60/40 helium/Co2 mix.
Best gun I ever worked on was a weihrauch HW/80. When I finished with it, it had a muzzle velocity of over 1600 fps but the kickback was worse than my BSA and would break your nose if you got too close to the scope lol.

I had a go with my mate's Super-7, running 32ft/lb. It had no kickback at all and was half the weight of my goldstar. I wasn't keen tbh, I like a powerful weapon to feel like a powerful weapon ;)

What you havent dealved into the realms of Extreme window licking... the standard version is tame, start working your way up by licking the outside of a dusty bus and then progress from there.

Or theres always the story my mate told me when he used to be in the navy, he said when on shore leave in germany his mate came back with alot of extra cash when pushed to say where he got it apparently some fetish group paid him to lie naked under a sheet of glass while they deficated onto it now thats well in the realms of extreme window licking i'd say

I now have a mental image of the Village people pooping onto a glass coffee table whith some poor ££££er underneath
Hand jobs for crack? No, too high class
Remember folks, two golden rules of fetishism: no kissing and you'll get paid more if you keep your eyes open

Cool :)
If anyone does set up a group for any hobbies or interests I've created the new Hobbies and Interests category.
There is already a Window Linking group http://www.vpcuk.org/forums/group.php?groupid=1
