Hi everybody I bought a 2002 AWD 2.4 V70 about 6 months ago from ebay so I thought I would join this forum for future help and advice , we needed a older car to cart the dogs about in as the were wrecking the wife's Zafira .I bid just over a grand did'nt really think I would get it for that but I did and I must admit that my bum did start to twitch when I won it thinking what's wrong with it BUT it's been really good up to now the wife and I don't use the Zafira that much now prefering the Volvo.I really enjoy fiddling about with it at weekends and I want to change the exhaust for a SPORTS typ next,if anyone can make a recomendation that would be really helpfull, anyway dont want to bore so I will just add Happy Christmas and a great new year everone.

Welcome aboard:) These cars are sadly under-valued these days, which has worked in your favor. It looks a tidy example, nice colour too.

Thank you graemewelch I have got to admit that before I picked the car up I visited another Volvo site and read about auto boxes dropping to bits hand brakes falling apart ,the lights in the dash flashing like a CHISTMAS TREE and plenty more . The car came with full main dealer history including new cam belt reciept but I must confess my bum still was going sixpence then half a crown on the m25 on the way home with the car

The fact that it's had full volvo history is helpful in many ways. The following are things that can happen but doesn't mean they will. The autobox usually falls apart around 100k, Volvo say it never needs a service but a fluid flush with the correct fluids is a must if it's got a few miles under it's belt. The transmission cooler is integrated in the radiator and is known to exchange ATF with the coolant, resulting in the gearbox filling with water and subsequently dying. The Magnetti Marelli Throttle unit on these have a really bad reputation but the modern replacements seem a lot better. The DIM (speedo unit/cluster) is renowned to fail. I see yours is original but may have already been repaired. The angle gear that transfers power to the rear wheels used to be made from chocolate, the newer version is much better (check the history for work done) keep an eye on the housing at the front end of the propshaft for dribbles. If serviced properly, most of these problems are avoidable and the DIM can be sorted cheaply (ish) or replaced at about £750 Time for that 2nd whiskey lol. Hope you have a good single malt there and none of that blended crap :)

M_R_P not as bad as it could be, I have flushed the auto box with 15lts of fluid and fitted a magnafine filter , changed the oil and filter it appears to have had mobil 1 0-40 in from new, in the last 8 months its had a new cam belt, new air con condenser, brakes, new plugs,2 lambda sensors, and compression check as the engine check light came on all main dealer , its a very late dec 2002 and appears to almost a 2003 hopefully not to many surprise,s to come but I will keep an eye on the front trans ,thanks for the warning.

Welcome from a fellow dog lover/owner. I bought mine with the intention of her going in the boot. No. She decides the back seat is best with opening windows! Now I have a dog blanket & dog seat belt on the back seat. Lol

being a late 2002, it may have (slim chance but possible) the Bosch throttle, which is a very good thing. although my Bosch throttle failed a few weeks ago lol. it's nice so much preventative work being done on the car, you're certainly off to a flyer.

While I have your attention I do have one problem ,the engine warning light illuminate's every now and again ie sometime once a week sometime's once every three weeks ,normally on start up not first thing but after a short run stop and then restart. The car runs ok while the light is on I just read the code p0422 main catalyst efficency below threshold bank 1 and reset any idea's.

Check the big pipe between the engine and the inlet manifold.

Is there not an easier way to change the bulbs in the dash ?. I wonder if the neighbours were looking over the fence while you were wielding the chainsaw.
What you should ask Mr Health and Safety MRP is are those suitable shoes to be wearing whilst using a chainsaw. ;)
Never mind the shoes, the trousers would be the biggest concern. You can live without a toe or two but clipping the femoral artery with a chainsaw usually means you're dead before you hit the floor.
