Over the past day and a half I've finally fitted Rachel's Christmas present, the downpipe with sports cat. Yes, it's taken a day and a half, because it's a hateful job that I would never undertake again. I was going to do a how-to, but my how-to is now take it to a garage to get it fitted. Nothing's particularly easily accessible, owing to the proximity of the propshaft and the angle gearbox. Getting the new one in is the hardest part, as the 90 bend coming from the flange which connects to the turbo isn't as tight as the standard downpipe, so the pipe sits in a slightly different position, it also means the lambda has to be fitted once the pipe is in place as it won't clear the steering column, and as it's tucked under the servo, this is awkward. The pipe itself looks good now it's in place, and once I've sorted a slight blow between the exhaust and downpipe should sound good too. I only got the chance to take 1 photo so far, as I finished it in the pouring rain, so decided to wait until later to take some pics, and do a vid of the sound.

a new gasket is only about 2 quid from my local zorst place, I donated mine to chavboy's R exhaust install.

Just going to whack some silicon sealant around the existing gasket. If I'd have known how hard it was going to be, it would still be in the conservatory. ;)

I'll be sticking a new downpipe on mine soon. I'll let you know how much easier it is ;)

It'll be a piece of cake on the FWD, it's the bloody angle gearbox that's the biggest obstacle, I even considered taking it off at one point.

It was a lot more flexible than the new one, so it could well have been on it's way out, though it has corrugated pipe under the braided wire, so not sure if it would leak or not. I may have snagged it on the way out, it was a case of brute force and ignorance to remove it.

You're lucky, on the older AWD's the downpipe does a 180 under the turbo over the top of the propshaft. So I think (as I've never done it) the propshaft has to be undone first :(

ill take note and make the leg length shorter on the top part of the cat to avoid trouble with lambda sensors in the future. glad to see its finaly fitted though

Take it to an exhaust place and get them to fit it, probably a bit easier if it's up on a ramp.

The gasket from volvo is about £8 as I just fitted a new one to mine when I fitted my cat back system

I can vouch for the down pipe on a ph1 awd. Horrible job & I'll need to do it again at some point. I made some noises doing that job.

It's a lovely bit of kit mate, just a ballache to fit on a AWD car.
Quick update, Rachel's taken the car to work, and I got a text from her saying it feels quicker/ more eager, so she's a happy bunny. :D
