I was banking a lorry unloading packs of block paving blocks at work today, as I walked behind a pack that had been unloaded, the pallet tipped up, and the blocks fell towards me, I managed to move quick enough to get my body out of the way, unfortunately, they caught my arm and hand trapping them. I was pinned for a couple of minutes, before I was freed by someone who luckily was close by. Just been up the hospital, and after being x-rayed, been told I have a fractured metacarpel. If I hadn't have moved as quick as I had, I would have been trapped under a ton and a half of blocks, which would have done a lot more damage, probably even killed me, so a sore hand is quite a let off. Obviously the photo of my injury isn't up to the standards of Graeme Welch's, but this shouldn't put you off your lunch.;) Image Luckily I always wear gloves at work so superficial damage isn't too bad, just soft tissue, the fracture is under where my hand is cut.

Lucky man. How does the H&S witch-hunt work when you're self employed? is there a case against whoever stacked/positioned the pallet? Was the area suitable for stacking the load? was it all stacked correctly etc. etc. Glad you're ok mate.

Post 680848 by partsforvolvos.com on 2014-01-16 14:06:48

I think it might also go down as near miss, because of the potential to be fatal. mart is right about riddor - has to be reported. if they don't, basically you can rape them for compensation loss of earnings and they will then get all twitchy when hse turn up and do a full company review .

Fractured hand is not a finger, should be reported..... http://www.hse.gov.uk/riddor/reportable-incidents.htm

Post 680878 by Jimmie on 2014-01-16 15:05:16

Glad your ok but it must be reported by "law" but it's up to your company whether they do or not. When you get a chance put the incident in the accident book as that will cover you Hse will most likely want to speak to you if reported and check your paperwork which can be a pain.If everything is in order I would not worry about it.

I don't mind it going further, as I have a slinger/signaller ticket, and relevant C.S.C.S. card, so all my paperwork is up to date.

Supid question I know but did you manage to take any pics of the incident? If not ask if any of your buddies did as it might help you with any insurance claim.

Back to the hospital today, and I got plastered, well fibreglassed. Got to keep it on for 5 weeks, but back to the fracture clinic in a week to check progress I presume. Image Image Popped into to work on the way back to let them know what was happening, but they were all down the cafe, surprisingly the blocks were still where they were when I left yesterday, so took the opportunity to take some pics: Image Image Notice how after my accident they decided they didn't need pallets after all :slap: Image This is the side I was stood on with my arm trapped between the blocks and the crash mats: Image Anyway, back to work Monday, but on light duties.

So is light work going to be tea boy for a mouth or so. Do they still give you a choice of colours for the fiberglass cast as I had a black one easy to keep clean. After couple of weeks the wire coat hanger will be out when you get a itched contend with.

Like others have said your lucky to get away with what you did, mine was in a cast for about a month but I was back working (was a milkman at the time) the next day.....light duties my a*** :P
What numpty thought a chep would stack on top of the bricks?? then pulled the forklift out lol
Hindsight's a wonderful thing mate, and looking back I shouldn't have let them be stacked like that, but when that's how you're told to stack them, with those pallets, you just get on with it. They were hiabbed on, and they had been there a good couple of minutes, so I (stupidly) assumed that the top pack had been stacked central to the bottom pack, it's a mistake I won't make again. ;)
