Never actually done a project thread before on any of the cars, so this will be a first! As far as I know, this is the only White 855R Manual that Volvo sold in the UK, so when Cherry put it up for sale, I had to have it!! She's rough round the edges, but a nice project to get my teeth stuck into (not that I do much of the work!). Mechanically it all seem pretty well up together, goes as it should, no nasty knocks or bangs. It just need a new throttle cable (possibly the stiffest accelerator pedal I've ever felt!), a thermostat and handbrake shoes. They'll be the first little jobs just to make it easier to live with daily. Cosmetics need work! Interior is pretty decent, apart from the drivers seat, which could do with being replaced ideally (anyone got a black 850R seat for sale?!!). The rest is all in good nick. Exterior wise; The paintwork is incredibly flat. A weekend of detailing would probably bring most of it back to it's former glory. But there's rust coming through on the tailgate and rear drivers side door. The lacquer has gone on the bonnet, so that need a respray, as do both the bumpers. I may just end up respraying the whole thing. As much as I like Tritons, the wheels have to go, and i've already got a set of Volans lined up. Mod wise, it's got a few already - Rica 304, OBX catback, Walbro Fuel pump, blue injectors, carbon airfilter box thingy, Electronic boost controller. It drives as it should, pulls well & brakes well. But once I've made my mind up which way to go, i'd imagine most of those bits will be gone. Crap pics, sorry. It was getting dark when I took them earlier: Image Image Image Not sure where to go first - Mechanics or cosmetics? Technically it runs good, so the mechanics could wait until it's looking right. Although, doing the mechanics first would mean my main man Tim, wouldn't have to be too careful when working on it. On where to go with the mods/tuning; at first I was going to just restore it to a mint original example, but I don't think i'll be able to help myself, so the chances are it'll end up with some hefty mods but we'll see. I've got to say, it feels good to be back in a P1. As fantastic as the S60R is, all you P2 guys have no idea what you're missing!! Let the fun begin!

Looking forward to seeing the progress Chris. BTW it's not a P1, that would be a V70 Classic, and we've got P1 and P2 cars.:D

850's and x70's are all p1's to me, always have been. Same platform.

Fantastic to see this has gone to such a good home, I genuinely can't wait to see the end result as despite what route you end up going with it I'm sure it will be a brilliant job. One thing you must do, which isn't on your list, take that damn TDi badge off the back and fit the badge it deserves, as the only white estate it has to be badged as an R ;)

Sourced a V70 tailgate, door handles and roof rails. And a set of Volans. Hopefully picking that stuff up Friday. Just need a drivers side rear door, and exterior door moulding for the drivers door. The car is having a thermostat, throttle cable and handbrake shoes on Friday too, just to sort those irritating niggles out. I think the first job will be to sort all the suspension out. Decided on going with BC 'BR Series' coilovers. I had them on the S70, they work very well, and are still sensible enough for daily use. Fully adjustable height and damping, and they come with all brand new top mounts, of which the fronts are camber adjustable, so for around £700 they're a bargain. IPD anti roll bars, poly bushes etc etc. Hopefully get that done in the next couple of weeks. In the mean time, I think the plan with the body work is to mop the whole car and see where I'm at with the paint work. The bonnet, (new) tailgate, (new) door and both bumpers need spraying for sure. The rest of the bodywork is straight, and rust free, so if after a machine polish it comes back to former glory (which myself and my bodyshop guy think it will), then happy days, no need for a full respray.
Gonna be good as new in no time, i reckon a compound and machine polish will bring it back a treat :B_thumb:
I think it will. Like I said, it's pretty straight, just really flat and dull. So fingers crossed!

Post 684415 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-26 15:38:54

I picked up a set of Volans on Thursday! So much happier with them on! In really nice condition too, so won't need to refurb them! Image Also picked up a V70 tailgate, V70 roof rails, a decent rear drivers side door, new piece of exterior trim for drivers door, a load cover, an ME7 manifold and a Tim Williams ported Throttle body. So starting a nice little collection of bits now! I also got hold of a mint condition wooden steering wheel, not to everyone's taste I'm sure, but I really like it. And it feels much nicer to drive with than the original steering wheel. Image So I'm on the look out for a t5r suede gearstick gator, and wooden gearknob. But I have a feeling I may have to buy these new from volvo. Should hear back from Rufe tomorrow with a price hopefully. On Friday it had a new throttle cable and thermostat. The handbrake just needed adjusting, so that was a result! Had a good look underneath the car when it was on the ramps, and it all looks pretty clean, no rust or anything to worry about. The OBX catback isn't that old, but looks quite haggered, so I think that will be getting replaced when the downpipe does. The only pisser is, it seems like the rear main seal is leaking, which is a bit of a pain. So I might jog the m59 on, and get an m56 and proper diff sooner rather than later.

Post 684416 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-26 15:42:27

One other thing to mention, since getting the throttle cable done on Friday it's only boosting to 0.8 bar. The EBC is still set the same, which before was delivering 1.25bar. And no matter what you set the ebc to, it still only boosts to 0.8bar. I've had a look under the bonnet but can't find anything obvious. Is there anything specifically that could have been messed up when the throttle cable was changed? Just seems like too much of a coincidence.

Post 684472 by cherry1809 on 2014-01-26 18:06:40

Don't be too hasty with the rear seal, I was assured it was changed when I had the clutch done :) The oil filter was swapped a while ago as the seal went and covered most of the underneath with oil (hence the advisory on the mot :) ) I actually prefer the Volans myself, but the Tritons came up at a good price with tyres.

Post 684495 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-26 18:29:07

It has a slight clutch judder too, which is a sign as well I'm told. There's defo oil coming from somewhere. It's not really a concern, as its all gonna get stripped out at some point once I know where I'm going with it. I'm more irritated by the lack of boost at the moment. I'm pretty sure I'm not doing anything wrong with the EBC, any ideas??! Ally intercooler coming from Blackbeast :-)

I can get a new one from RUFE for £60 but it will stand out a bit as the steering wheel & handbrake are looking a bit tired too, so your old one would fit in nicely, a bit of tlc & leather treatment & it should come up ok. Post 684556 by AndysR on 2014-01-26 21:03:33

Now much better does it look on the Volans, I have to say I think the Volans should stay on an 850R as there isn't a better standard wheel. But then I am biased. The wheel looks good and I've heard that it's better to drive with than the standard one. Maybe you could take the wheel to a wood specialist and have it stripped treated and refurbed if you fancy having it match the dash. Painting the clock surrounds black also sounds like a good idea..

Clutch has always done that (original was pretty knackered when I bought the car) and the new one was fitted 2 days before it went France. Not sure if they're supposed to have bedding in time or not. I'd give Rufe a ring, he's not on here often. I had to getting all the cambelt kit for the V70. Did you find the solenoid? Only small and quite stealth, as it has black cable wrap on.

Post 684831 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-27 18:05:52

I'm still at work at the moment. Decided on starting to hand polish the car, I'm too impatient to wait for my pal to mop it. So far so good, it's gonna look absolutely ££££ing fantastic when it's done! Boost problem sorted. Explain when I get home later! Heard back from Rufe, the gear knob is £110! with a 20% discount. That's a bloody expensive knob! Can't get the suede t5r gator anymore.

Still following this and it's hurts lol gonna be a special Car when finished mate and yes I'd go for the Owens :)

Post 684851 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-27 19:01:30

Ok, first off it had nothing to do with having the throttle cable replaced. It was just a coincidence. No matter how much I turned the EBC up, it would only boost to 0.8bar. So this morning on way to work, I switched the EBC off, and only got 0.3bar of boost, so 100% was looking at a boost leak somewhere, the EBC was having some effect. The car has got an RIP kit on it, but its a proper collaboration of bits and bobs from here, there and everywhere (GWE kit on the way!)! I had another good nose around, and spotted this. This is the section of pipe that connects to the top outlet of the intercooler to the top pipe, slightly buried under the slam panel which made the split harder to find!: Image Image Luckily I had one of these in one of my boxes of crap: Image Cut the wobbly johnson off it, and hey presto, we're back in business! The current RIP kit won't be staying too long anyway, but I couldn't live with it the way it was. Standard boost is gutless!

Post 684854 by S70T5Chris on 2014-01-27 19:13:45

The paintwork is absolutely dreadful, probably the worst I've ever seen. The plan was to machine polish it, at the bodyshop I use. But he's busy as hell, and won't be able to do it for a couple of weeks. Being an impatient sort I decided I'd have a go by hand. The pictures are proper crap. But here is a before pics of the front wing, flat and gritty is how I'd describe it! The picture makes it look better than it really is! Image Don't know whether, this would technically be the correct process, but they way I played it was, clay bar the panel, then use the Meguires 3 stage jobbys - Paint cleaner, Polish, then wax. Image Hard work, I've spent over 2 hours, and managed to get the passenger front wing, and passenger side front door done! Again the picture is total ££££e, but the result is amazing. I'm so pleased with the outcome, I can't wait to get the rest of the car done, and get the bits that need painting done. Image Image
Nice to know u got a intercooler whats next
I'm kind of collecting bits at the moment! The first job is to get the BC coilovers fitted, IPD rear anti roll bar, poly subframe bush inserts, new OEM wishbone bushes, and new drop links. That'll see the suspension sorted. I'm very tempted to get a set of AP's for the front, I'm just waiting on a firm price and lead time from Don @ Kalmar. They'll fit under Volans without spacers, they're expensive, but goddamn they're sexy!

Spent the last 3 hours polishing. Still not finished the passenger side yet! It's had some iffy paintwork on the rear quarter. Can't really tell if I'm gonna be happy with it or not, the light in my workshop is ££££! And starting to compile a list of little dings that I'm spotting as I'm working my way round. Anyone recommend anyone in the south that's good at that sort of thing?

It's hard to tell if I'm gonna be happy with the rear quarter or not! I forgot a decent camera again, so grabbed a spot light to see if I could get a better picture of how good the paintwork is starting to look. I had the BSR Optiflow jobber on the S70. I liked the look and the noise. I honestly didn't notice an increase or decrease in performance on the road or track. But some of the guys on T5D5, have experienced the affects of heat soak on the track with a cone filter, and have returned to the standard airbox, which has solved the issue. Guys on T5D5 running 400+bhp are using the standard airbox.

Concentrating on the cosmetics, whilst collecting parts in anticipation of Tim being available to work on the car for me, hopefully in 3-4 weeks time. These arrived today Image Put in an order to PFV's yestersday of an Egg crate grill + R emblem, Spray washer Jets, Aerowtwin wiper blades & a Pipercross panel filter. Here's an idea of how cruddy the paint work is, plus the rusty bits: Image Image Image Image Image Continued with more polishing this afternoon, just uploading the pics now.

More polishing! Got the passenger side finished, and the roof done (what a ball ache that was!), after another 4 hours of graft! Just got the drivers side to do. I'm not bothering to touch the drivers side rear door, tailgate, bonnet or bumpers as they all want spraying. Although once I've done the drivers side, I'll go round and do the door and boot shuts. I'll leave the engine bay until Tim has worked his magic. Took in a decent camera, so hopefully gives you a better idea of just how good the paint work is starting to look. I'm surprised it's come up this good, I really thought I was looking at a full respray! Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Bit gutted I had to take it back out in the rain!

Looks awesome Chris one thing I will say with white paint you'll be surprised how much it will have faded from the original colour ide say if your only going for a part re spray ide be tempted to go for a colour match and not original paint code. I would also get a price tho for the full lot blowing over and if you can strip it and prep it I doubt it would be much extra

This is the initial plan, which should be done within the next couple of months or so: BC Coilovers IPD Rear Anti Roll Bar New OEM Wishbones bushes Poly subframe inserts New droplinks Pink ££££ engine mounts Plugs Leads Dizzy cap Rotor arm Ignition coil New BCS PCV - Possibly, seems OK though. Pollen filter Fuel Filter Fit new expansion bottle and cap New cam belt Oil change Brake fluid change Fit ported ME7 mainfold TWR throttle body 18t with angled exhaust housing Already have blue injectors & walbro fuel pump fitted. Blackbeast Intercooler AEM progressive water Injection + tank in boot GWE RIP kit GWE maf to turbo pipe (hopefully will have in time) Reinstate original airbox + panel filter Feritta 3" Downpipe For now, keep the OBX cat back. Kalmar Union/AP Racing lightened flywheel & clutch M56 + Gripper LSD (You have no idea how ££££e even an M59 is, until you drive a one with a proper diff! - It's gotta be done!) Remove EBC + reinstate BCS Fit new boost gauge Fit innovate afr gauge + new twin gauge pod Custom map Cosmetics: Clay/Polish - Underway! Spray bonnet, door, V70 tailgate, V70 door handles, headlight trims & both bumpers - Got all the bits needed! Fit front splitter - TC's nearly finished it! Orange insert indicator lenses HIDs Tint windows Egg Crate Grill - Ordered from PFV New Wheel center caps - Got! New gear knob New drivers seat - Hopefully have sourced one! New center air vent New drivers side air vent Spray washer jets - Ordered. Bosche aerotwin wiper blades - Ordered. New Glovebox tray Once this lot is done, I'll see where I go. Most likely on the cards is AP front brakes. I'm keeping my eyes open for the right calipers on Ebay, I reckon I could do the whole kit with new discs and pads for around a grand, but buying the components separately. Then possibly a forged engine and turbo upgrade, but we'll see how it goes.

Should be able to get second hand calipers for £3-400 on EvilBay. I've already sourced a set of adapter brackets. Discs from Reyland (which are better quality than the original AP ones) are £255 for a pair, and DS2500's to fit the right calipers are under £100. So just the bells to try and source, or may have to get some made?
Where and how much did the brakes cost Chris? i've desperately gotta sort mine soon
Pretty lucky tbh mate. The kit was listed on Ebay, excluding any discs and pads. I made an offer for the guy to end the auction early and sell them to me, of £350! Which I was very pleased with. Gen S60R discs £160 ish, and a set of DS2500 is £200 ish, so will have the whole kit with new discs and pads for around £700, which is a stonking deal for what they are. A proper quality big brake kit. I had the exact same kit on my S70, and it is superb, on the road and track. Bloody mad that I'm buying back all the bits I sold a year ago! But hey ho! I didn't really want to use spacers, but 5mm, I can live with. I am going to get them refurb'd though - in white, with a black Brembo decal! I reckon they'll look ££££ing awesome!!

I've not heard good things, the calipers aren't of great build quality, and neither are the discs. Even the genuine AP racing discs aren't supposed to be of that great quality. Unless you just want something for ultra bling factor, I'd stick with something that has been tried and tested, and works as it should. Stop Tech's are great, AP's are great, but if I had a P2, i'd just get myself some S60/V70R calipers and discs. If you're planning on giving them some serious abuse, steer clear of drilled discs as they will 100% crack between the holes way before the disc's life has run out.
TBH mate, all those 6/8 pot calipers that are floating around, Ksport, Hispec, PB, etc... I've not heard good things, the calipers aren't of great build quality, and neither are the discs. Even the genuine AP racing discs aren't supposed to be of that great quality. Unless you just want something for ultra bling factor, I'd stick with something that has been tried and tested, and works as it should. Stop Tech's are great, AP's are great, but if I had a P2, i'd just get myself some S60/V70R calipers and discs.
only heard good from ksport and hispec i dont want R brakes. im wanting todo everything better than the r has to offer if yo get me...~ id never pt drilled disks on tho bud
Honestly, I don't think the Hispec or Ksport kits are going to be better than the R Brembos. If you want something that is possibly "better", then it would have to be AP's IMHO, but even then, they're not worth double the price!

Post 687954 by T5RatherAmusin on 2014-02-07 19:00:13

I'll agree to disagree with you on that one mate lol price ain't really an issue the Rs go for good money so id rather just put it towards the good stuff. ..

My Kad 6pots were excellent fully rebuidable but the discs didn't last long at all with the DS3000 pads but boy did it pull up.

££££ed right off! The brakes I bought arrived today, and they are not as described! They are not 993tt fronts as advertised. After some research it turns out they are 996 rears, they are with the correct brackets to run on the front of the 850 with S60R discs, but not what I was lead to believe I was buying. The guy who sold them to me said he wasn't any the wiser, and I tend to believe him. He sent me a link to his original purchase, and they were described as the proper 'Big Reds', so he didn't know any different. I knew straight away before opening the package, it was nowhere near heavy enough! It's highly unlikely he'll take them back for a refund though, bought outside of Ebay, and paid by Paypal gift. I'm in two minds what to do; Use them? Will they still do the job? Use them for now, until I get some AP's or proper Big Reds? ££££ them off, and wait till a proper kit runs up?

Had some of that sun stuff today! So got outside and clayed/polished the remaining panels. Everything has polished up pretty well. As much as I would like to get a full respray, I just think it'd be a big waste of money, so only the bits that really need doing will get done - Bonnet, rear door, tailgate, front & rear bumpers and headlight trims. It should be going to the bodyshop week after next, all being well! Also had chance to 'construct' the new grill! Fit the new wipers and washer jets! Image Image Image Image Image Image

Post 712819 by S70T5Chris on 2014-05-19 06:46:03

No mate, I'm getting pissed of tbh. The guy at the bodyshop has been on holiday for 3 weeks now. He should be back today, i'm giving him 2 weeks to get it finished or I'm taking the car as it is, an I'll take it somewhere else. I'm not really getting a huge amount done, but I made the mistake of saying that I wasn't in a rush and 2 months later, it's still sat there. It's taking the piss now. The tax and MOT have both run out since it's been there, so it's currently sorn :-( On a positive note, once it's back I have a definite plan of what I'm doing with it, and I have the money just to crack on and get the whole thing done. The S60 is 100% going. That'll have to be broken, it's the only way I'll get any sensible money from it. A few of those parts will end up on the 850.

We have movement! LOL! I've been layed up for best part of a week with a ££££ed back, but popped in to see the sprayer guy today. It's very nearly done! Just need to fit the bumpers back on, and spray the door handles and mop it, so all being well it should be back early part of next week! When I take the S60 up to Tims next week, I've got to pick up the fresh front seats. I also got a t5r gearknob and alcantara gaitor from Neal. Really looking forward to getting it back now, and cracking on with getting the cosmetics A1. Then as soon as Tim can take it, get the goodies done!

Post 722763 by S70T5Chris on 2014-07-06 16:24:33

Rightyho. Actually had a spare morning for a change! Had the car back for 3 or 4 weeks now, absolutely disgustingly filthy when it came back from the body shop. Needless to say with that, and the length of time they had the car, I won't be using them again. Fortunately the paintwork they've done is satisfactory, there's a couple of niggles if I'm being picky, but I may just be expecting too much, the rest of the car isn't exactly perfect. Putting being a perfectionist aside, I am very pleased with how it is looking. Got the chance this morning to wash, clay, polish and wax. As it hasn't had anything since coming back from the bodyshop. The sun didn't want to play ball, so the pics aren't great but you get the gist. The comparison between when I picked it up and now is like night and day! Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Exterior wise it's getting there now. Still want to do a much more in depth detail, but need the spare time. So this was a pre-detail, detail!! In hindsight I think I will get the alloys refurbished, they're not in as good condition as I would like. Probably a shade darker than what they are now, the same as the S60R wheels. Got to fit the front splitter and roof rails. Also tint the windows. I have obtained a Miltek cat back now, just need to decide on what tail pipe I want to end up with, I'm leaning towards the DTM style T5-R exhaust trim. I also have some US style front indicators that I went to fit, and then realised that they don't have the side light, and the bulb holder is totally different. Not sure how i'll get those on yet, so may end up just getting new standard ones. The ones on the car now are skanky as hell. I have colour coded door handles to fit, just building up the enthusiasm to tackle it! May be a job for Mr W! New number plates on the way, and tailgate badges too. Not sure whether to run with the chrome, or go black? Once the BC coilovers are fitted my intention is to run it as low as possible, without causing any rubbing issues on the arches. Interior wise it needs work! The door/boot/bonnet shuts and inner painted door surfaces are seriously manky. I reckon a good day on those alone will be required to get them up to some kind of standard I'll be happy with. Apart from the drivers seat (which is hanging!), the rest of the seats, carpets, dash, etc is all in good shape. Just needs a bloody good detail. The sort of thing I can do over a few evenings after work. I have new front seats ready to go in! I have a walnut T5-R gearknob and alcantara gaitor. Plus a T5-R alcantara arm rest to fit. To the relief of some, the wooden steering wheel will be going. After seeing the job that Royal Steering Wheels make of retrimming, I'm going to get the original wheel redone, probably with some alcantara inserts. As mentioned before, it has the blue R dials from the x70 series fitted, I'd like to get those out, and paint the fascia black to match the 850 interior, rather than the grey. Think that's about it! Then it'll be off to Mr Williams for the real work to take place!

Update time!! The 850 is now in the hands of Mr Williams! Whilst it's starting to look the part, I make no bones about it, mechanically it is(was) an absolute ££££ing ££££ter!!! (no offence Cherry!) Tim found it had more than 10 fault codes just relating to the ABS!!! LOL! Having V70R clocks, it had no ABS light on the dash. The clocks are going back to standard, on reflection the blue R dials form the x70's just don't suit the 850 at all. Anyhoo, Tim has started working his way through the car, and ordering parts that need replacing - THERE IS A LOT!!!! Not upgrades just general parts to make it decent! This project is waaaaay beyond just bolting on some nice new performance parts! But we have a game plan, a needless to say it'll be a beast when it's done!

I know what you mean about maintenance issues. My car is standard from the factory and I haven't done the body work apart from a quick mop up but I started at one number plate and finished at the other. I did some items you haven't mentioned, I under sealed all the underside, wheel arches and replaced the rear bumper brackets and under sealed the chassis rails as far as possible and the front end as well. Any rust was treated at the same time (only superficial).

Delve a bit deeper, past the new shiny exterior to find what beasties lurk below. A little teaser courtesy of Mr W! How many ABS codes do you have? Is this even possible?!!!?! Things are cracking on! The car has mountains of new parts, radiator, heater matrix, air con condensor, all new ABS sensors, rear disc/pads, suspension components... The bloody thing is gonna be brand new underneath! Tim has done the engine - S60R 2.5l, shimmed, retaining the R rods and pistons, ported & flowed 850 cylinder head, NA cams, D5 Oil cooler, VXR injectors, ported ME7 manifold, TW Throttle Body, etc... Brand spanking new 19t ready to bolt on, with a Ferrita down pipe and a Miltek cat back. Later M56 gearbox, now with a spanking new gripper installed. BC coilovers, with alternative rear springs (Tims recommendation) AP Racing calipers have been sent off to Brake Caliper Refurbs, to be rebuilt and refinished in white with black lettering. I've ordered an AEM FAILSAFE afr/boost gauge & a carbon fibre works door mounted gauge pod. HID's, US style indicators, amongst lots of other bits and bobs. Had a rethink on the steering wheel. I have sent the original R steering wheel to Jack at Royal Steering Wheels. I'm having it made thicker, and thumb grips added. Black leather and dark grey alcantara insert. Hopefully we should be somewhere near by the end of the year.

Great updates Chris, sounds like it's going to be awesome when it's done, not that I doubted it wouldn't be knowing what you're like with your cars.. I think people forget how old even the newest 850's are, unfortunately you can't just get away with bolting performance parts on them and enjoying them without considering all the other parts and fittings first, this is where many have fallen victim of multiple faults and continuing failures because unlike yourself and a limited few people most just look with performance blinkers at what can be achieved with bolt ons...

Post 749556 by mitchyboy01 on 2014-11-25 22:56:26

I think you're right there andy. They were a performance bargain to slap a map on and abuse for peanuts. Nowadays they are a bit long in the tooth and things go wrong. It's left to enthusiasts to bring them back to life!

It's alive! Progressing nicely. Timothy has spent some serious hours on the car, and making great progress. He's even been changing rusty old bolts in the engine bay for new Volvo ones, you gotta love him! The car is running, albeit on a rica 304 map, but it's running! Tim's still got a shed load to do, but it's sounding very promising indeed! I need an ECU for it. If anyone happens to have one - It need to be a T5/T5R/R variant, from a late car with Air Con and ODB2 port, doesn't matter if its manual or auto. Some pretty stuff for a change... Had an email from Brake Caliper Refurbs to say the AP's are done! And they sent this little tease! Image Also got my steering wheel back from Royal Steering Wheels! I had it made thicker, with added thumb grips. Black leather with Alcantara bottom insert. I can't even begin to express how amazing the quality is! Image Image Image That's it for now!

The rear brakes are done, airbox, MAF and MAF to turbo. It's currently running Redbrick's map just to check the fueling with the new maf housing. Fine tuning the map will happen when the weather picks up for poor old Timmy! One issue that showed was a loss of fuel pressure at higher RPM. Turned out to be a split in the fuel pump outlet hose. As demonstrated by my lovely assistant: Image Maf to turbo done! Image

Post 756920 by S70T5Chris on 2015-01-22 08:49:40

Also, I've had a good bit of luck for a change! The AP calipers I bought from eGay and had refurbished have turned out to be a fairly rare beast it would seem. Enabling me to run a 330x32mm disc. Which according to Tim should pretty much give me the ultimate brakes I could have. I believe the off the shelf AP kits come with a 325x28mm disc. A pair of 330x32mm discs with curved grooves, AP Racing bell mounting bolts & DS2500's ordered.

If you've been keeping an eye on this thread on T5D5, you may have noticed that trying to get these calipers to fit has been a bit of head££££ for old Timmy, as they are not quite the same as the off the shelf kit you would buy. fallen slightly behind on the updates! This was the last update from Tim: You can't get a new scuttle panel anymore, so Timothy decided to give the original some love. And so begins the ballache (for tim :-) ) of fitting, professionally(!), the gauge in the door: In textured, plastic primer, to match the dash texture: Image Remove the door, to make it easier to make a nicer job of running the cables. The work Tim has done for Chris is a bit above & beyond your average home mechanic & Chris has borne the cost in in order to get himself a true monster 850. It takes more than a socket set & a haynes manual to get a car like this one. But do feel free to post up your own project thread so we can see how you get on eh? I don't make any apologies for not doing the mechanics myself though. It's not what I do. But to say most people do all their own work (particularly tuning work) on here is a vastly inaccurate assumption. As for the blank cheque comment; Really?? You'd be incredibly surprised at how much the entire labour bill has been. Over 80% of the build cost so far has been parts.

Post 763807 by S70T5Chris on 2015-03-14 19:02:42

Now I've driven it some more, a bit of a review. Well as best as someone with my limited understanding can give! First off, the one thing I have to try and get across is how much of a nice drive it is. Ever since the latter couple of years of owning the S70, I've wanted/requested that the tunes on my cars make for a nice, easy drive. It's easy to whack the boost up, stamp your foot on the go pedal and take off like a scolded rat. But when it comes to pottering around, those kind of tunes make the car difficult to control, hard work and somewhat of a hassle. You don't want the thing tearing off when you breathe on the accelerator, well I certainly don't anyway! The way Tim has mapped this car is quite unbelievable. The control you have over the boost, and acceleration is even beyond what he and Shark achieved with the S60. It's an absolute joy to drive. And with the combination of the DMF and V70R clutch, you couldn't want for an easier car to drive. The clutch is light and smooth. The throw of the gear stick is perfect, and it feels positive and smooth yet light and easy to engage. Its so smooth when you lift the clutch and engage the next gear, even with my hamfisted gear changes, it's almost impossible to make changing gear jerky or not smooth. It's hard to believe it's a 20 year old car. The low down torque is something else. Even running less than a bar of boost up to 4k. It's pulls so strong from low down revs, no other word can describe it other than, impressive. But Jesus Christ, push the pedal to the floor, and the power and acceleration is breathtaking. It pulls so hard all the way to the red line, it's simply relentless. It's without a doubt the fastest car I have ever owned. I have driven my old man's Jaguar XFR a lot, and of course, whilst it would destroy pretty much anything on the road to the high triple figures, I really think this 850 wouldn't be far behind up to 100mph+. I'm simply blown away by the performance of it. And what's more impressive is how this can be achieved, not only with a 19t, but a 19t that is running less than 1 bar of boost to 4000rpm and barely peaking at 1.3bar to the red line. So whilst I have only just got it back, it really should be a reliable set up for the road and the track, I guess time will tell. The AP brakes feel great. The pedal feels firm and it stops as well as you would wish for, even from cold. I'm yet give them a massive amount of stick but I think the DS2500's are a good compromise for the road and track. The suspension is superb. The BC's really are incredible value for money. I have Elevate lowering springs on the S60R so it's firmer than standard but d'you know what, I think the 850 rides as well, if not better than that does. Coupled with the rear IPD anti roll bar, it really feels planted and stable. At first I was wanting to set the ride height as low as possible (without causing issues), however I left it to Tim to set up all aspects of the car up to his recommendations, suspension included, so the ride height is approximately where a standard 850R would be. And it's absolutely the right way to go. It sits how it should, and maintains it's practicality. It's perfect. Best till last; The gripper LSD. It has a slight groan when manoeuvring, which is more than acceptable (and expected from a gripper). But oh my lord. Even with the ££££y Kumho 205's that are currently fitted, it's stunning! Literally on every bend I find myself testing the diff, and it just doesn't stop amazing me. It just goes. Put your foot down, and it just drags the car around the bend. It's undeniably one of the best modifications you can do to a FWD car. It doesn't just bring a smile to your face, it makes you laugh out loud as it seems to defy the laws of physics! I remember fitting a Quaife to the S70 years ago, and being amazed, and I think I even more blown away by the Gripper! I said back then that if you had a standard car, fitting a proper LSD is the first thing I'd do. That advice has not changed, fitting an LSD is one of, if not the most, huge improvements you can make to a standard car! Overall; Happy is a huge understatement. Everything about the car is perfect. And I couldn't be more appreciative to Tim and his hard work and perseverance. Now to crack on with the rest of the cosmetics!!

Managed to get away from the Mothers Day duties for a few minutes to go for a little spin, and take a few up to date piccys. The car is minging mind you. I'll get some polish on it in the next couple of weeks hopefully. And then work out, how much further I'll go with getting the bodywork painted. The interior need a serious valet, and I have new front seats to go in. The interior mats are dying to be renewed, so that's on the list now. Image Image Image Image New slightly squarer tail pipe welded onto the Miltek. Looks massively neater than the standard oval shape IMO. Image Image Image Image Image Image I fitted this all by myself I did. Image Image Tims kind addition. Cheers buddy. I'll get my payback. Image I had the centre arm rest retrimmed by a company in the midlands called Bespoke Leathering. The job is top quality. The T5-R gear stick gaitor is in pretty good nick, but I think I'll get them to make me a new fresh one to match the arm rest. I also think I will get them to retrim a handbrake cover to match in black alcantara. Hopefully getting the wheels refurbished, and the new tyres on this week. Still loads and loads to do, but it's really taking shape now as you can see.

Stunning stunning car! Looks fast and sounds phenomenal! Great write up too, I know exactly where you're coming from and whilst I don't have the luxury of a manual box with a diff I can agree entirely on what you're saying with regard to the driveabilitly of a properly mapped car and that's the issue I have when it comes to finding a replacement when I sell, as for the comments about paying someone to do the job for you well I'd ignore those I always favour letting someone else have the headaches of replacing broken parts etc than having a dead car on the drive because I've found my ceiling in car mechanics.. Stunning job stunning car, pleased to see one that's not been stripped for spares or hashed together on a driveway... Be good to see it sometime, will pop along to vine again when I can. Great work Chris and a credit to Tim's attention to detail.

Post 764214 by S70T5Chris on 2015-03-17 19:24:24

Been to see my bodyshop guy today. The car is booked in for May. The drivers side wing has a small spot of rust, so I am going to replace the wing. And the tailgate has a very tiny but of rust coming back through, so I'm not convinced that will last either. So that's going to be replaced also, as is the spoiler as that has had a shoddy repair at some stage in it's life. He's going to paint both sides, door, skirts, wings, etc plus the tailgate. So once it's done, the only thing that won't have been painted is the roof. After going this far it'd be daft not to get it all done properly. So I am now on the look out for a mint, and I mean MINT(!) 850 tailgate and spoiler, and a drivers side front wing. Colour doesn't matter, but has to be absolutely accident free, and rust free.

Don't ditch the old wing once you've replaced it for a good one Chris. It's 10x better than the one on mine :D

The Volans have been sent off to the powder coaters for some love. So it's currently sat on it's track wheels and R888's. Don't want to go too mad as it's going for paint soon, so gave it a rinse off and a quick detail. Also fitted some new number plates. Looks lovely Chris, but the front bumper doesn't look as if it's lined up properly on the drivers side corner . Passenger side looks spot on and flush.

Good spot Mike. Looking back at the earlier pictures, before the bumper was resprayed, it sat as it should, so hopefully just an adjustment required. I'll get the bodyshop guy to look at it when he paints the sides.

If we do another trip later on in the year the chances are I'll take this with me. The yearly t5d5 castle combe track and MRG weekend is in June, I think I'll be taking this to that. So that will be its first outing on track. Good shout on the LEDs. Got any links to what I'd need?

Post 765188 by kmb on 2015-03-24 20:47:37

This is a good point, on the original ECU the stock guage on my car only ever went just over half way on full boost and just touched into the white part, so unless I have a very consistent boost leak I've considered the dash guage is inaccurate from the start. No play in the turbo, no oil leaks or smoke on full boost, all pipes checked over (but I am considering a refresh). The boost is held on the 15G virtually all the way to the red line. Dash guage went from 50% to 80% (looks slightly less from a right handheld angle) on full boost and performance hike was huge when the remapped ECU went in. Although any other suggestions of things to check, are always welcome. PS - Also apologies for the thread invasion, maybe I should start a thread of my own :)

They are stunning. I've only driven a little on the road with them but the improvement in grip is insane. Only thing to mention is being a track tyre they are actually a fair bit wider than road 215's if that makes sense, so just make sure you have the clearance. Also you get a reasonable amount of road noise, not catastrophic, but noticeable.

Well, what a busy day! Decided to attack the interior and swap over the front seats for the better condition ones I've been sat on (no pun intended!!). I'm pretty certain I sucked up an entire dog today - Sucked up! Not off! Jesus Cherry, you never heard of a hoover?!!! LOL! I'm gonna be finding dog hairs for ever and a day! Every square inch of the carpet and roof lining was absolutely covered! Every bit of trim - dirty doesn't even come close! I must have used a dozen cloths to clean the interior today, but the results speak for themselves! I could maybe do with spending a bit more time on the roof lining, but the interior is just about as good as it could get, it's looking really nice. Just a couple more bits to get retrimmed and It'll be done. The original drivers seat: Image Seats out: Image Image Image Difficult to try and get across how manky the roof lining was!: Image Starting to clean it, you can see the difference already: Image Out with the old: Image In with the new!: Image Interior all done! Then it'll be onto the next mission - the engine bay!! Rinsed, clayed, t-cut, and polish. (Ignore the side skirts, as they will be painted!) And lots of cotton budding, and tooth brushing! I've got some All Purpose Cleaner that you dilute 1:10, and it says it can be used one plastic, vinyl, leather, fabric, etc you name it!!! I just use it for interior trims, but thought i'd give it a whirl, and it worked an absolute treat!

Post 810119 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:07:28

OK, so this is well overdue an update :o A ££££ ton of stuff has happened in the last 2 years(!!!!) nearly. I'll try and pick up where I left off best I can! Pretty much when we left off in May '15, having had the car back from all the major work for a couple of months, the car was back at Tims for a few bits and bobs; - Slight fiddle with the remap - I had a judder from the rear brakes, IIRC this was resolved by skimming the rear discs, and re-bedding them in. - Air con drier & regass - I bought a DO88 RIP kit to replace the badly fitting GWE stuff. Had this powder coated black along with the maf housing, for a much more factory look. - New fuel rail cover, now that one would fit with a decent fitting RIP kit! - The drivers window mechanism had ££££ itself - New drivers door check strap - Towing eye cover - New door lights - Fit a brand spanking new front grill :-) - New master cylinder/resevoir (purely for cosmetics) - Paint the servo - Fit a new HID kit for high beam (cheap Chinese kit had failed already) - Supply me with new wheel arch liners, ready to go on after respray - Tim also supplied me some new trims that go under the headlights. You can still buy the blank trims with no wiper cutouts, ready for respraying. - Have a tinker with the front brakes, the squeal was doing my head in. We tried shims, anti rattle clips, different pads, all sorts. I can't actually remember what solved it in the end, but I'm still on the DS2500's. And the squeal/squeak appears on occasion, but it's well liveable! Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Post 810120 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:09:32

Shortly after this, around July, it went to the body shop. I had another tailgate to go on, as the old one had some minor rust, a new rear spoiler (the original had been repaired at some stage), and a new front drivers side wing, I managed to find a relatively new genuine Volvo wing that was sat on am 850 that had had a front end repair with genuine parts, and then been parked up with a knackered engine. Those, along with the new wheel arch liners went to the body shop. The bumpers and bonnet had previously been painted by someone else, so I had both complete sides painted. The paint job itself, I was happy with, but the guy painting it had not taken a great deal of care in masking up certain areas, so I (Tim) was left with quite a bit of cleaning up to do. After the bodywork was done, the car went to Pro Reflect for a 3 day detail, which included a 3 stage machine polish, and a glass ceramic coat (which amazingly is still as perfect now as it was then! Highly recommended!). Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Post 810121 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:12:14

Towards the end of 2015 she went for another stay at Mr Williams for more titivations and niggles. :) At this stage we're really starting to chase the nitty gritty bits and pieces to make the car as nice as possible. - Tim spent a lot of time correcting/tarting up a lot of irritating issues caused by the sprayer. To name a couple of the issues; he had just blown over the door handles including the plastic gasket that sits behind; he had gotten over spray on the rear bumper top; over spray on door rubbers/seals amongst other places!; done a real poor job of masking up the black triangle stickers on the rear doors (pics explain this better), etc.... Also (which wasn't his fault), the rear tailgate inner seal was destroyed when he removed it to paint it. - So new door handle gaskets, rear tailgate seal, a door seal, about £9,000,000 worth of trim and panel clips - New Volvo black rivets to replace the ££££ing crap the painter had fitted the wheel arch liners with! - Various factory stickers that are still available - New Volvo Wiper arms - New Volvo wiper bladed - New Volvo Battery - New Volvo mudflaps - New front bumper top - New complete rear bumper (top is not separate!!), paint obvioulsy - P1 V70 side skirts, much nice looking than 850's, painted - New wing mirror caps, painted - New tailgate badges - New power steering pump bracket and bolt - New rear bumper brackets and bolts - Replacement boot panel - Needed a new lambda sensor - I'm sure I've missed some stuff, and this lists doesn't even come close to portraying how much time Tim spent cleaning and making good so many odds and sods on the car Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Post 810122 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:13:32

After that it needed a new starter motor, which I got my local Volvo specialist to do for me. In February '16 I took it along to a Swede Sport UK organised dyno day at Devil Developments in Littlehampton Image Image Image Couldn't have expected better really!

Post 810123 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:15:21

Around June '16 I bought the Kum Wagon from Dodgy Mo, as I was after a few interior bits for mine, and I knew the Kum had a nice interior. Image Image In September '16 both cars went up to Tims. I had collated a nice little list of stuff to sort out on the white one, plus steal a few interior bits from the grey one. - Fit another heater control panel, my bulb were still red from when Cherry had it! - The idle speed was a bit high, and the throttle peddle was initially a bit stiff if left for a while, both sorted with an adjustment of the cable - I had quite a bad water leak coming in through the rear drivers side door, turn out to be the sunroof drain doodar or summit or nuffin - New bonnet catches - Realign the bonnet so it sat better - Battery drain, which turned out to be one of the door switches - Rear heated screen stopped working, wiring was stretched from when the painter refitted the tailgate - Air con had stopped working by this point, so a regas - The blowers were woeful. So Tim stripped it all out, blew the flodger threw, and now the blowers are like a hurricane! - Replaced the door catches with shiny new ones! - Replace a load of interior bits, some from the Kum Wagon, some we had collected, dash top, door cards, glove box tray/lid, entire dash console(!), roof lining, entire sunroof assembly as mine was pretty rusty, various bits of trims, speaker grills, etc etc... - Fit a new alcantara geatsick gaitor I had made - Fit a new handbrake lever that I had trimmed with alcantara - Oil change, gearbox fluid, and any other little things Tim spotted along the way! Image Image Now, we're really getting anal; Image

Post 810124 by S70T5Chris on 2017-02-28 21:18:19

Not long after I got it back from Tim, I noticed a small drip of fluid under the car, plus the air con had packed up again. I took it to my local specialist (Just Volvo, highly recommended), and he diagnosed that the air con compressor was shot and was fairly convinced that what I saw was the oil from the air con system (it had stopped leaving any fluid by this time). So I booked it in with him along with a couple of other bits. - New Air Con compressor, Volvo seals & regas (again!!) - I had new idler pulleys, which he recommended I did as mine were a bit noisy - A new style reverse light switch, as my reverse lights had stopped working - Also he put new seals on the oil cooler, as they were weeping slightly - Fresh oil It then went off to the valeters, which conveniently is next door! And these are some snaps I took yesterday evening: Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image Image

Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
I cannot take credit for it, looking back it's quite funny to think that on a lot of bits we didn't agree on but in the end one of us backed down (usually the one that didn't have the car at the time...). Chris wanted a black grill and I wanted a standard grill, 1-0. Chris wanted it slammed and I wanted a subtle drop, 2-0. Chris wanted the 7 pages of defects ALL sorting, I wanted him to buy another car to start with, 2-1. Some of you might of noticed that when Chris sets his mind to something he has incredible dedication to it, I took a lot more convincing, after a couple of weeks work on it I was still not convinced. Even this wouldn't put Chris off, it wasn't until I could start a job on it without generating more and more work that it became enjoyable. I remember picking the car up from a Grantham meet and we had already worked out a very comprehensive list of what it ought to have, oh how the car had changed since I saw it 4 years previously lol. The pub car park highlighted about another week's work. Some I still don't understand, the intercooler bypass pipe WTF! The speeds that wouldn't reach 88MPH (fully floating ABS rings). The in car smoke machine that filled the cabin when the heater was on, I even too a video of that. When I got back and plugged in the Volvo System Tester, it came up with 10 ABS codes, 10 is the most it can read and you cannot clear any until they are all read. Chris as I said before I'm glad you didn't listen to me, not one bit, not at all. You now have a beautiful car you are proud of. 2 all lol.
Looks fantastic, only thing I'd change is the wheels would look better in their original dark colour.
The wheel colour is a matter of opinion. A darker colour wouldn't look better IN MY OPINION, and it's my car. And how the hell do you know what the original colour of the wheels were? Anthracite has been done to death, and part of the aim was keeping the car bright, giving it a fresh appearance, especially for a 20 year old car.
As for Chris's dedication Tim, he just handed you a blank cheque and said sort it, he just gets to drive the beauty lol.
What an absolute load of bo!!ocks. I've already had one ignorant pr!ck with that same underhanded comment on this thread. But coming from you Mike, that has really pissed me off. I have put a massive amount of time and effort into this car, sourcing parts, getting parts made, cleaning, replacing what I am capable of, ideas, suggestions, knowing what I want from the car, to the standard I want, the car looks the way it does because of me, No I didn't paint the body work, No I didn't fit the new bumpers, No I didn't weld the new tailpipe on the Miltek catback, but it's all there because of me. It's been a 3 year journey that has taken a lot of time and effort (and yes a lot of money) from both myself, Tim, and several other traders along the way, and it's been a labour of love for all involved, that has taken a wreck of a car to possibly one the best 850's in the country and one that I absolutely love and enjoy every time I get in it. Because I'm an enthusiast. Unless the day comes when I need the cash, this car will be going nowhere, ever. To try and belittle how much effort I've put in, in the last 3 years is simply c!!ntish. Blank cheque.... F!!ck off you ignorant tosser.

Just to say also, the project is by no means "finished"! I'm constantly looking out for what can be improved/replaced/made better. Already looking at options to tidy up the cam cover and inlet manifold, as it's the only detail that lets the engine bay down now. It most likely will be going over to a Motronic 4.4 ECU when ever it makes it's next journey to Tims. And he has been getting some great results with clipping the turbine blade on the 19t's with small gains in peak power, but the most impressive result is how it holds the power to the red line, rather than tailing off as my standard 19t does. Or I may well even go down the GT3076r route at some stage, time will tell. Also, purely for asthetics, I want to find some AP calipers that will fit under the Volans on the rear. There's still plenty to do!
The LOL on the end of the you just signed the cheques comment was a tongue in cheek comment and as you know me, I would of expected you take it as such. As for replying with ignorant £££££ and ££££, well if that is how you feel about me, I'll say no more. Mike

But your right, in that it's the finer small details like that, that seem to make all the difference. Thanks for the offer though.

If the remote fails, just gain access via the boot! BTW, it's a stunning example of an incredibly rare white 850R and credit to you for making it so. :B_thumb: The interior is mint!! Do you squat in those seats or do you just wear silk Pajamas when you drive it? :rotfl:

Chris in silk P-Js... That'll be a sight to behold :D
