Gday, New here guys, I have a c30 2.0D, love it, however recently starting has been an issue, at times (not always) it wont start first time, when it does I notice a lot of smoke from the exchaust. Im not the mechanically gifted.......could it be that i need to flush my diesel particulate filter?
thought welcomed.
Cheers Clippy

Hi & welcome.
What sort of miles is on the car, also is the car used around town mostly.
When was it last serviced at volvo as some diesels need a fluid to be topped up every 2nd service for the exhaust system.
Have a read in you hand book,is the starting problem first thing in the morning when it cold ?,but ok for the rest of the day if so could be a glow plug has gone.

Thanks for the swift reply Harvey, its an 09 plate with 48000 miles, yes it is usually does occur in the mornings, I use it daily for a 10 mile commute to work. Is the glow plug an easy fix ?

Glow plugs are a bit like spark plugs to change, best to get someone to test them.
They are less than £10 each and you will have 4
Just thinking if a glow plug has gone once it starts does it sound lumpy at tickover for 30-40 secs until the engine warms up ?,then it runs nice at tickover.

Hello & :welcome:
Glow plugs is a good call....I know nothing about the DPF as moved away from diesels before they became popular. Might be fuel filter needing changing...?

Welcome fellow c30.
GET YOUR DPF REMOVED. It will cause so many problems you just don't need. And then unaffordable amounts of money to replace!
:)

Be careful about removing the DPF as it is now part of the MoT test or soon will be. there is a post somewhere about it on the forum.

welcome, to the forum.
a 10 mile journey daily is quite short so the car wont get the chance to ever burn off the excess soot caught in the dpf unless you do a decent run on the motorway or dualcarriageway periodically. this may cause issues in the future.
that aside, it could also be that the egr valve is sticking open on your car causing this starting issue but glow plugs or the timer relay are probably the most likely. I have know a few to be non start due to this.
does your glow plug coil light come on and go off ok? does it make a difference if you glow it more than once? (don't start , turn key back to zero then glow again )

Thanks for all your comments, I think I will take it for an extended run and then moniter it for a time, your input is most welcomed.
