Hello and thank you for having me. I am a big lover of volovs as they have been in my family for years, in fact the first car I drove after passing my driving test was my brothers 850. I loved driving it and 6 years later I have finally gone out and got one of my own. I have got myself an 850 t5 estate:) she's new to me but I believe someone on the forum might know her as she has a vpcuk sticker in the back window:)
Hers a little PIC of her.

The last owner is from the bridgend area I believe as there are alot of recites from Volvo bridgend... She's now lives in Newport southwales.
The car does seem in pretty gone condition mechanicaly. She's is beautiful to just potter around in an the interior is almost perfect, Who ever has had her loved her as much as I do.
I just wanted to let you guys know what I plan on doing and I'm looking for some advice on the things I plan on doing and things you guys would suggest I do.
Firstly, I don't think she is on full boost. She's pulls ok but I only get about 1\3 into the boost gauge at best, nomaly its just about 1\8. Iv tried doing a lot of reading up on what to do about this and its seems to come down to either vacuum lines of the tcv. I'm going to try and find a leak and repair for now then going about replacing all the vacuum lines. Any advice on doing that?? Such as meathords for checking them what type of lines I should get roughly where it will all be?? Also is there a methods of checking this?? Iv heard of taking the line off the waste gate, will this work??
I also have the white smoke coming from the dipstick so I need to get the kit and replace the breather system. Is this likely to part of my problem with the boost or a separate issue all together??
A nother problem I'm having is the spike in revs as I change gear. This seems to be down to the icv, am I right in thinking that?? Would you advice a change or a clean out?? If a clean out is possible how do I go about that??
On top of this I will be doing a full service and flush including belts and tensioner, is the water pump cam belt driven as well?? (Havnt looked into that yet)
I want to get it to stage zero so any other advice would be hugely appreciated:)
Thank you hugely in advance, I will try and post treads on the jobs I'm doing to help people out on here as I go along.
Steve

Hello & :welcome:
For the low boost, I would look at the condition of the TCV and vac lines first, I wouldn't run it without a line to the wastegate as it may boost too high (as opposed to what you have now).
Smoke from the dipstick could be the PCV system.......cover the dipstick with your thumb, see if you can feel any pressure. Volvo have a small range vacuum gauge tool for checking this as the correct negative pressure is tiny.
Spike in revs COULD be the idle control valve. Have you tried unplugging it to see if makes a difference. If so, give it a clean :bath:
Water pump is driven by the cam belt, I just had my belt done and left the existing pump alone. Not saying this is right and proper, just sayin

Hello again. Thanks massively for all the answers:) I shall have a look at them all this week. For checking the vac lines what is the best method?? Iv gone and got my self a can of carb cleaner to spray on places (with a cold engine to avoid fires) and see if the engine changes rev. Would you recommend that?? And I shall unplug the icv and give her a little run. Then get to replacing things:) with the water pump iv heard it isn't critical to change it every time and iv done belts myself ands just inspected and reseated them in so I'll do that:) i want to get her as perfect as I can as i want to keep her for a long while and I know I will need to spend money to get her there( good job there's a lot of over time this month so I can treat her;) )
again thank you:)
And thank you all for the welcomes!!

Yes spraying something flammable is one way to find leaks.....but be very careful!!!

Welcome Steve.
If its a red 850t5 reg no p409--- it used to be mine.
Its never missed a service from new but unfortunately it was a cat D INSURANCE WRITE OFF IN AUGUST 1997.
I myself was unaware it was a cat D until I part exchanged it recently for an x type jag.
I have an H.P.I.CHECK if you want to see it.
Regards Richard.
